Mighty Writers teaches children and teens to think clearly and write with clarity through free programs that improve academic performance, address educational inequities, and build social-emotional skills. As a nonprofit that promotes literacy as a tool for social change, we aim to expand students’ access to opportunity in the short term and alleviate poverty in the long term.

In the areas we serve, less than 70% of youth graduate high school, and their literacy proficiency rate is just 35%. They lack access to the customary social determinants of well-being, whether good schools or sufficient food. In a recent survey, more than 75% of our students said they don’t feel safe anywhere. Our teens are at high risk of violence and victimization, and live with the emotional impacts of that reality.

Our mix of SEL workshops, academic programs, mentorships, and horizon-expanding activities leads to better educational and socioemotional outcomes for our student population.

We also run the Mighty Writers Food and Literacy Distribution program, which provides food, books, diapers, and other essential resources to the communities we serve — free of charge. MW is the largest client-facing food provider in the region.
