We’re organizing to create a breathtaking new mural on the ceiling above the pulpit at Ithaca’s historic St. James AME Zion Church—the oldest Black church in Ithaca and a cornerstone of community and faith since 1833. Designed by local artist Jesse Wright, this powerful ceiling mural will honor Black history, spiritual resilience, and the unshakable strength of community.

AME Zion Church Mural FUNdraiser!

We are so excited for this mural moving forward.

We've power-washed, primed, and transferred the sketch to the wall on Green St. Next comes the color!

Previously, we ran a fundraiser to fund the project and we'd love to raise a little more money to support local Black muralists Terrance Vann and Maryam Adib painting over the next 2 months!

We've been planning this mural for 5 years and now it's all coming together.  Last week, we had Southside and CUMEP volunteers assisting.  We have a community paint day planned for 10am-noon August 9th!

**Ithaca Murals** is a community-powered public art initiative transforming gray walls into **beautiful, meaningful works of art** that tell the stories of the diverse people who live here.

For more than **16 years**, we have helped artists, neighbors, schools, nonprofits, businesses, and community groups work together to create **over 400 murals** across Tompkins County and beyond. Our murals celebrate local culture, honor community histories, inspire hope, spark conversation, and help people feel a deeper sense of **belonging** in the places they call home.

We believe **public art can be a powerful tool for building stronger, more connected communities**. Everyone is invited to pick up a paintbrush, share their story, and help shape the places where we live.

We do this through our educational programs and by supporting system-changing projects with incubator and fiscal sponsorship services. Our projects work to transform the structures, as well as the habits of mind, that produce inequities in our communities, country, and the world. Their courage, innovative thinking, and heart-centered approach show us what is possible.
