INTERSOS' support to unaccompanied children

Children should never be left alone. But thousands of them are. And their life is in danger.

Unaccompanied and separated children (UASC) are minors left alone due to conflicts, forced displacement, or natural disasters. They are particularly vulnerable. They are separated from their families and deprived of much-needed protection and support. They are at risk of abuse and exploitation, and their life is often threatened. They are forced to abandon school and education. They are often compelled to assume the responsibility of primary caretaker for younger siblings.

INTERSOS protects and assists unaccompanied and separated children in several emergency situations, and currently…

In Chad, we extend our assistance to those affected by the decade-long conflict around Lake Chad and respond to the new emergency caused by internal conflict in Sudan, that forced over 300,000 refugees to cross the eastern border in search of protection.

In Niger, we support unaccompanied minors who have fled the war in Libya and are now facing growing internal instability and the consequences of the July 2023 coup and international sanctions.

In Libya, amidst limited humanitarian access and the impact of extreme weather events, we created safe spaces for vulnerable minors named Baity ("My Home"). Baity centers are located in Tripoli and the southern city of Sebah.

Building on a decade of commitment, INTERSOS continues to ensure the protection of unaccompanied minors in Italy with a mobile outreach team in informal settlements in Rome and Greece, particularly Athens.

Our dedication remains steadfast in providing care and support to those who need it most.
