Heavy rains that lasted almost non-stop on September 9–10, 2025 triggered massive flooding across Bali, causing widespread devastation. The extreme downpour, accompanied by strong winds and lightning, was influenced by the active equatorial Rossby wave, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), which intensified the formation of heavy rain clouds. Although the rain eased on September 11, many areas remain submerged, with severe damage and casualties reported.
The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Bali and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) have declared a seven-day state of emergency. Flooding has struck six major districts and cities—Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar, Jembrana, Klungkung, and Tabanan. According to BNPB, at least 120 flood points have been recorded, with Denpasar being the worst affected. Thousands of homes are inundated, daily activities have come to a standstill, major roads are cut off, and markets as well as public facilities are heavily impacted.
So far, at least 18 people have lost their lives, 5 are still missing, and 562 residents have been forced to evacuate to temporary shelters. Thousands more remain trapped in damaged or waterlogged homes. Conditions in the shelters are dire, with urgent shortages of food, clean water, healthcare, and psychosocial support.
Search and rescue teams, volunteers, government bodies, and humanitarian organizations are working tirelessly to carry out evacuations, search for victims, and distribute emergency relief. Yet the needs remain far greater than what is currently available, especially for children, the elderly, pregnant women, and other vulnerable groups.
