TERREWODE Diaspora Fund

Terrewode envisions a world where women and girls live healthy, dignified, and empowered lives, free from obstetric fistula and other preventable maternal morbidities. For 27 years, TERREWODE has implemented a multi-pronged approach to eliminate obstetric fistula and other childbirth injuries in Uganda. The interventions include advocating for the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women, creating community awareness on fistula prevention, influencing national policy to improve maternal healthcare, and building the capacity of more than 3000 community healthcare workers and 1000 fistula care team members.

TERREWODE also provides an individualized reintegration program that has supported over 6000 survivors (former fistula patients) through counseling, civic, economic, and human rights education, as well as training in income-generating activities. The survivors are also linked to community resources and networks, including the 44 Fistula Solidarity Groups established to advocate for community support for local leaders.

In 2019, TERREWODE founded the first and only specialized hospital for the treatment of fistula in Uganda and East Africa. Terrewode Women’s Community Hospital provides free, holistic, and patient-centered care for obstetric fistula and other childbirth injuries. To date, the hospital has treated more than 2000 women and girls, and supported the treatment of 1000 more at partner health facilities through its model of care.

TERREWODE has significantly contributed to reducing the fistula case backlog in Uganda, yet more than 75,000 women and girls are still living with fistula and 1900 new cases are reported each year. This highlights the need for strengthened prevention, treatment, and reintegratio
