Aging in poverty-isolation in Chile.
Living in poverty and isolation, along with a lack of support networks and access to essential services, is far more challenging for older adults in this situation than for those who are not. They may go weeks, months, or even longer without a personal call, a visit, or someone checking in on them.
The In-Home Care Program (PADAM) from Hogar de Cristo Chile provides ongoing support for this population. Scheduled visits are offered to older adults in their homes, delivering direct assistance, enhancing their quality of life, and alleviating feelings of isolation or abandonment.
The PADAM Program in Chile focuses on individuals aged 60 and above who live alone and lack sufficient family and community support to ensure their well-being. This situation can lead to abandonment or isolation, resulting in physical and mental health issues. However, the most severe consequence is the pervasive feeling of loneliness. In 2024, the Hogar de Cristo foundation assisted over 2,300 older adults through 45 programs in Chile.
Data from the 2024 Chilean census indicates that nearly 12% of surveyed households consist of individuals aged 65 years or older, and the senior population has more than doubled since 1992. Additionally, those who often care for another older adult or a disabled family member are primarily women, averaging 71 years old.
We invite you to provide companionship and care for these vulnerable older adults. Make a lasting impact by donating to this cause at www.hogardecristousa.org
