Politics aside, the gutting of USAID is [a de facto death sentence](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/03/15/opinion/foreign-aid-cuts-impact.html?unlocked_article_code=1.4U4.kKk9.hDxSgccQEPhl&smid=url-share) for people--many of them children--who have already begun to die from malaria, complications from HIV, tuberculosis, malnutrition, and more. Imagine dying from malaria--you can't breathe, it feels like you're drowning, you're overwhelmed by seizures, your organs fail, and toxins build up in your blood. Now imagine that you're a *child* going through this--because 3 out of 4 malaria deaths are children under the age of 5.

For my birthday, I'm inviting us all to lean in. Through rigorous analysis, GiveWell identifies charities that allow us to save the most lives per dollar donated. In addition to malaria nets from the Against Malaria Foundation, GiveWell has identified [three other top charities that are most cost-effective](https://www.givewell.org/charities/top-charities).

If you, my friends, can provide 1000 nets, you can protect 2000 folks for $5000. I'll match your donation, so together we'll raise $10,000 for 2000 mosquito nets to protect 4000 people. Note that the Top Charities Fund includes four nonprofits, so while we'll be providing the equivalent of 2000 mosquito nets, GiveWell will make disbursements according to which of these charities have the highest priority funding needs each quarter.*

GiveWell is a nonprofit dedicated to finding outstanding giving opportunities and publishing the full details of their analysis to help donors decide where to give. Their staff spends thousands of hours each year reviewing academic evidence and researching different global health and development programs to identify the most cost-effective, evidence-backed ones. 

They don't focus solely on financials, such as assessing administrative or fundraising costs. Instead, they conduct in-depth research to determine how much good a given program accomplishes (in terms of lives saved, lives improved, etc.) per dollar spent. They currently recommend a short list of [top charities](https://tracking.cirrusinsight.com/c33ed044-507a-45aa-8fc5-0161a4df059b/givewell-org-charities-top-charities) that do an incredible amount of good, estimating these interventions can save a life for about $5,000 on average. The top charities are working to [increase demand for routine childhood vaccines](https://tracking.cirrusinsight.com/77d7a485-bc10-428c-8d98-f20a045a4d5f/givewell-org-charities-new-incentives), distribute [vitamin A supplements](https://tracking.cirrusinsight.com/77d7a485-bc10-428c-8d98-f20a045a4d5f/givewell-org-charities-helen-keller-international), and prevent malaria through [net distributions](https://tracking.cirrusinsight.com/77d7a485-bc10-428c-8d98-f20a045a4d5f/givewell-org-charities-amf) and [antimalarial medications](https://tracking.cirrusinsight.com/77d7a485-bc10-428c-8d98-f20a045a4d5f/givewell-org-charities-malaria-consortium).

Donations to the [Top Charities Fund](https://tracking.cirrusinsight.com/77d7a485-bc10-428c-8d98-f20a045a4d5f/givewell-org-top-charities-fund) are granted on a quarterly basis to support cost-effective funding opportunities at their four top charities. GiveWell does not take any portion of donations made to the Top Charities Fund. Their work is fully funded by donors who choose to provide unrestricted funding.
