New works are at the absolute heart of ENB's mission: whether it is looking at the classics with fresh eyes, ensuring female choreographers are better represented on stage, or nurturing emerging talent, creating work provides new ways of interpreting ballet and making it relevant for everyone. Over the last 10 years English National Ballet has introduced ground-breaking works to the Company's repertoire, from Akram Khan's Giselle to Mats Ek's Rite of Spring - which have demonstrated the boldness of our vision to evolve the artform, whilst continuing to honour the tradition of our classical repertoire. New work has also been the tool that ENB has used to tackle the underrepresentation of female choreographers on stage by commissioning 29 works by women. Our programmes She Said and She Persisted were eye-catching, critically acclaimed bills of new work which have pushed forward the conversation about representation across the ballet sector. "A programme of three ballets by three women choreographers is a campaigning first." The Guardian comments on She Said Creating a work takes time, resource, and investment, however it can yield significant return by delivering co-production income, securing high profile tours in prestigious venues, and attracting and retaining international talent. It is also essential fuel for the wider sector; enabling employment to a network of freelancers, makers, and performers across the country, and providing the creative content which is central to ENB's industry-leading engagement, participation, and creative learning programmes .
