Established in 1983 by Donna Stahlhut, whose son's epilepsy diagnosis highlighted the lack of support, Epilepsy Foundation Texas (EFTX) has become a beacon of information, resources, and support for families navigating epilepsy-related challenges. EFTX's work spans over 40 years, encompassing transformative programs, education, and advocacy initiatives. For over three decades, EFTX has provided no-cost camps and clinics to children and adults living with epilepsy, empowering them to thrive. Recognizing the importance of mental health, EFTX recently introduced programs that equip individuals with the tools to manage their well-being effectively. EFTX's advocacy efforts have yielded significant achievements. In 2015, their grassroots campaign contributed to the passage of the Compassionate-Use Act in Texas, permitting the legal use of low-THC cannabis products for patients with intractable epilepsy. This legislation was expanded in subsequent years to include additional conditions, demonstrating EFTX's commitment to improving access to holistic care. EFTX's impact extends to schools, with advocacy leading to the implementation of Sam's Law in May 2019. This landmark legislation mandates seizure recognition and first aid training for all Texas public school personnel. Moreover, through the dedication of EFTX volunteers, epilepsy awareness and seizure first aid education have been incorporated into the Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) Health Education curriculum, starting from the 2nd grade through high school. With unwavering commitment to the epilepsy community, EFTX continues to make a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by epilepsy. Their work addresses crucial needs, empowers individuals, and fosters a more inclusive and informed society.
