Help Transform Companies for Good
The Economics of Mutuality Foundation is promoting a new business model-type approach based on the principles of Mutuality, that can ensure both the sustainable, profitable growth of a company and respect for its natural, human and social environment. Spurred by a far-sighted question posed in 2007 by the leadership of Mars, Incorporated — 'What is the right level of profit for the corporation?' — the Economics of Mutuality (EoM) program that started at Mars has matured into a breakthrough management innovation and a new growth model. EoM empowers business to adopt a more complete and mutual form of capitalism that is fairer, more efficient and more sustainable than the dominant profit-maximizing business models of today. Partnering with a wide range of Mars business units around the world and with world-class academics from leading universities, including the Oxford's Saïd Business, the Mars Catalyst internal Mars think tank – that is moving into a new open collaborative EoM platform based in Geneva, Switzerland – has undertaken over a decade of in-depth research and business application. This has included field experimentation in the Mars business ecosystem, in-depth external peer reviews and case studies of best practices across a variety of companies and business pilots to explore the practicalities of how business can address the people, planet and profit equation in their wider operational ecosystems. Founded on breakthrough performance metrics, innovative management and accounting practices and new forms of profit construction, the results of the Economics of Mutuality are very promising. They are demonstrating that when a company invests in its communities, individuals and environmental stakeholders, while measuring and managing performance with non-financial indicators, the value created is superior - including financial performance, even in the short term – than traditional profit maximizing approaches. The EoM approach promotes a more mutual, environmentally-friendly and financially successful economy, at the heart of which lies the transformation of business performance that creates a new relationship between business, society, the environment, capital and work. EoM is now evolving into an open collaborative structure consisting of a not-for-profit public benefit 'EoM Foundation' owning a for-profit 'EoM Solutions' consultancy -- to help engage more businesses and leaders around the world in transforming firms for good.
