Service Volunteers building a stair rail for a Senior's mobile home

COMMUNITY NEED

33% of Santa Cruz County residents are over 60 years old.  Older adults often can’t make their own small repairs or find providers offering affordable services. This results in them living in substandard and unsafe conditions. By helping these residents with small home repairs, we enable them to live with greater comfort and safety.

OUR IMPACT

One of our clients was quoted $3000 by a contractor to install three stair rails on her front and back steps, which she could not afford. We found that the rails would cost $50 each, so she purchased them. Our Service Volunteers installed the rails free of charge.

In a local Senior Mobile home park, several residents were given a deadline to bring their entry stair railings up to code or face fines and penalties if the park owner were to do the work. Our team helped eight fixed-income residents rebuild their stairs or replace the railings, bringing them up to code at no cost to the residents. We spent approximately $1500 on materials for this project. A video about this project is available on YouTube.
