CPNYC was founded in 2009 to meet the needs of children left behind by parental incarceration. Although general social services organizations existed, they did not address the complex needs of youth of imprisoned parents. Ms. Content founded CPNYC to partner with this population, remove barriers, and create opportunities for these children to thrive and achieve their full potential. CPNYCs unique model co-locates a licensed mental health clinic and children's centers in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, and the South Bronx providing an array of youth development programming and services tailored to each child's strengths and challenges and fostering a unique uplifting environment for hope and resilience. Mental health practices are infused into all aspects of after-school and summer day camp. Mental health practitioners work with after-school program staff to support each child and holistically address their needs. Children receive one-to-one, group, and family therapy in a “safe space”, greatly reducing the stigma and fear associated with visiting a government employed social worker or private mental health professional. Program activities are designed to promote emotional processing and offer children the opportunity to learn healthy coping strategies and positive forms of emotional expression. Over the past 14 years, CPNYC has been on the frontline fighting against the systematic criminalization of Black and Brown people. This is reflected in our staffing and leadership which consists of individuals that have lived social and cultural experiences similar to those we serve, either having directly served time or supported an imprisoned loved one during their sentence.
