In Indonesia, we know Posyandu as one of the first places we turn to for health, where care, compassion, and community come together. The people who welcome us there with warmth, guide us with their knowledge, and support us with unwavering dedication are our Community Health Workers (CHWs).
They are the heart of our neighborhoods: from the community, for the community.
And yet, they remain some of the most overlooked heroes in our health system.
WHAT COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS DO FOR US
Every day, CHWs carry out essential tasks that keep families healthy and communities strong. They:
- Connect people to vital healthcare services, especially in areas where help is limited.
- Share life-saving health information, empowering families to protect their well-being.
- Identify and record community needs, ensuring no one is left behind.
- Provide basic care, distribute medication, and monitor health, especially for those at high risk.
- Offer home-based support, bringing compassion and assistance directly to people’s doorsteps. Source: Scott et al., 2018
Despite these life-changing contributions, CHWs in Indonesia are still labeled as volunteers—not formally recognized as part of the national health workforce. Their responsibilities continue to grow, yet their recognition and compensation do not.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has long emphasized the importance of CHWs and recommends fair compensation that reflects the skills, dedication, and emotional labor their work demands. Source: WHO, 2018
