The BSMF is a fiscally sponsored program that is 100% volunteer led out of dedication to our mission. Half of our board members are current student midwives and new midwives so our programs reflect the current needs of students.
Our mission is to support more student midwives to complete their training. We are specifically focused on BIPOC students as an under represented group in the midwifery community and work to uplift their experiences. The more diverse the work force, the more culturally congruent, safer care is available to a range of families. The WHO has described midwifery care, "essential to the provision of quality of care, in all settings," and "could avert more than 80% of all maternal deaths, stillbirths and neonatal deaths."
Our main goal is to not only support more BIPOC student midwives but to work toward building systems where they begin their practice with skills, enthusiasm, and love for midwifery, instead of burnout, debt, and a lack of community. **
