Harvey Cushing changed the course of modern neurosurgery. Before becoming one of the founding fathers of the specialty, he served in Belgium during the First World War, treating wounded soldiers at the Mendinghem field hospital near Poperinge.

Today, this remarkable chapter of medical history remains largely unknown.

As the Belgian Society for Neurosurgery, together with the City of Poperinge and future public and private partners, we aim to create a lasting tribute to Harvey Cushing at the very place where he served.

The project includes a permanent memorial at the historic Mendinghem site, a dedicated exhibition at the Lijssenthoek Visitor Centre, educational and historical outreach, and an international inauguration in March 2028.

Your contribution will help preserve this unique Belgian-American heritage and ensure that Harvey Cushing’s service, humanity and medical legacy continue to inspire future generations. Every donation brings this vision one step closer to reality.

The Belgian Society for Neurosurgery promotes education, research, and collaboration among neurosurgeons.
