Our Goal: Improve access to empowering, quality and community-led psychosocial healing spaces for refugees.
Our Values: Respect, Curiosity, Understanding, Connection.
Our Mission: Build community capacity for healing
Our Vision: Refugees can determine their futures, unbounded by the impacts of conflict and displacement.
Our Story
Amna آمنة in Arabic means ‘safe one’ or‘ protected’ Amna began as Refugee Trauma Initiative.
In 2016 over 13,000 refugees were stranded on the border of Greece and North Macedonia.
We set up a tent and started providing therapeutic group sessions for men, women and children who experienced violence, displacement and torture.
We worked with refugees and psychosocial experts to develop our current programming – nonclinical community-based interventions that help people who have experienced violence and forced
displacement feel safe again.
The four pillars of our strategy:
Community Partnerships Hubs: Community organisations are the first to respond in a crisis. They are the experts in their context and are most capable of building sustainable psychosocial support that is locally owned.
Global Healing Network: We are creating a global community of organisations providing quality, evidence based, MHPSS care to share our learning and promote best practice for supporting displaced people.
Strengthening Systems of Care: We form strategic partnerships with institutions working with displaced communities. We deliver bespoke training journeys equipping local governments, INGOs & system
practitioners including teachers and health workers to become trauma and identity informed.
Refugee Leadership: We are a refugee led organisation, committed to ensuring that people with lived experience design, facilitate and lead refugee services. We are expanding the network of refugee-led organisations and mental health workers internationally.
