AI for Animals

Support essential field building efforts at the intersection of AI and animal welfare. We have an exciting 1:1 10.5k matching opportunity by Mobius that donors can take advantage of until March 31, 2025.   Here are some of the reasons to consider when deciding whether to make a gift to support our work.   The world is going to change rapidly due to AI:   The unprecedented acceleration in AI capabilities - evident through increasingly sophisticated models, hundreds of billions in investments into tech companies and startups, and rapidly evolving government policies and regulations - signals a transformation as significant as the Industrial Revolution, except it is unfolding at a much faster pace.  This is a rare opportunity to make progress for animals:   This represents a pivotal moment where we could weave consideration for animal welfare into the foundations of increasingly powerful systems that will shape our future. Less efficient and adaptable systems will eventually be abandoned in favor of more efficient ones. If we align the more efficient future systems with the interest of animals, this can be much higher leverage than trying to change the existing systems.   Not enough people are taking advantage of this:   There is some R&D on animal welfare applications of AI, but they are mostly isolated to academia or startups with very little communication with animal advocacy groups and little evidence of growing adoption. No governmental AI policy has any mention of animals to date except for Serbia. There is no benchmark to measure level of animal consideration in different AI systems. And a year ago, there was not even a website dedicated to this topic until we made one.  We can fix that with your support:   The concept of using AI to help animals has been of great interest to many groups of people from scientists to philosophers to advocates and more. We have seen promising early indicators of tractability in our efforts to connect these groups, warranting further stakeholder engagement/coordination to explore paths forward. AI for Animals (AIA) has been an informal, volunteer-run project of Hive for nearly 2 years, but over the past 6 months, it has garnered more interest/opportunities than our volunteer team has capacity for. Currently, we have 290 members of our AI Coalition channel, 700+ newsletter subscribers, 130+ conference attendees, 50 average attendees of our Bay Area meetups, at least 1 counterfactual job placement, 1 Asterisk publication, 5 coalition members who are stakeholders in the EU AI Act Code of Practice consultation, and our newsletter writer will be an upcoming guest on the 80k podcast talking about this subject.
