I am creating this fundraiser in the hopes that you will celebrate my Big Five Oh by supporting an organization about which I care deeply. 

Muttville started with one woman (Sherri Franklin) taking home an old dog from a shelter and seeing if she could find him a home.  The Muttville team now rescues and re-homes 1,000 dogs annually, pulling from shelters all across California (and elsewhere), where their chances of survival are slim. Muttville's HeadQuarters is cage free. Dogs spend their days napping in sunny spots and greeting the caregivers who come and go.  The Mutts that don't live at HQ live in foster homes.  No more cages.  No more anxious barking neighbors.  No more cold concrete floors.  Every dog who who is pulled out of a shelter by Muttville has already won the jackpot.  The forever home is the icing on the cake.

Our family dogs, Winkie, Lisa, Jessie & Millie all eventually became seniors in the comfort of our home.  They never knew what it was like to be cast off in their golden years.  My first rescued senior dog was Peekaboo, the beloved companion of a family friend, whose dementia had become dangerous to the little shih tzu.  I offered to take her and while I have always felt kinship with non-human creatures of all sorts, I had no idea what joy she would bring to my life, and how much she would teach me.  When she moved in with me, at 10 years old, suffering from both horrible allergies and a severe GI condition (from which she would eventually succumb), she struck me as so resilient. I was in awe. I had been through some personal upheaval, myself, and was inspired by the ways in which this enthusiastic, smart and sassy little dog took on the world and didn't let anything get her down.  

Dow and I took in Leo from Muttville just a few days before we moved in together.  Leo was an unwell little guy, who we only had for eighteen months, but he gave us such a gift, as Dow and I became a dedicated care team for him and learned so many lovely things about one another in the process.  When Mr. Jones came to live with us from Muttville, our home was again transformed.  He brought such lightness and goofiness with his calm, quiet energy.  Mr. Jones perhaps set a Muttville record, living with us for nine years.  His absence is palpable but we continue to be grateful every day for Muttville and its work.

Mara's 50th! A Fundraiser for Muttville Senior Dog Rescue

Muttville is changing the way the world thinks about and treats older dogs.

Every day...
dogs in good health with wonderful personalities are euthanized. Why? Because they're older, and not considered adoptable. A dog is brought in because he can't jog with his guardian anymore. Or he needs a little time to get up the stairs. Or he’s simply not a puppy. In some cases, dogs are moved from loving homes to concrete cages because their guardians have died or simply can't care for them anymore.

We reach out to senior dogs at risk, give them the care they need, and find them loving forever homes. If we had our way, no dog would spend their last days in a shelter. There is so much love and joy in these dogs!
