The sadistic nature required for a human to cut off Stark's tail boggles my mind! I'm compelled to help get his knee fixed to give him an even 'footing'! [So glad this little guy has an adoptive home lined up!]

Stark arrived to us as a small quiet kitten who had already been through more than most animals should. An independent rescuer had been working at a rural colony a few hours away and managed to save Stark and his brother just in time. His sibling was healthy enough for routine care, but Stark came in with a serious injury: an open infected wound where his tail used to be.

During Stark’s first veterinary exam, tool marks were found on the exposed tailbone, confirming that the injury had been caused by a person. Even so, he greeted everyone with a purr, pressing his face into the hands of the vet techs and settling in for treatment with an ease that surprised everyone caring for him.

Stark has since gone through debridement, antibiotics, laser therapy, and consistent wound care. His foster has done everything possible to help him heal, and his tail nub is finally starting to recover. He also has a committed adoptive home waiting for him once he is medically cleared.

A few weeks ago though, something changed. Stark began to fall when walking toward his foster and developed a limp. X rays revealed a dislocated patella, likely something he was born with but now significant enough that it affects his mobility and causes pain. To ensure he can grow into a comfortable active adult cat, he now needs corrective surgery along with continued care for his tail.

This is the kind of case Lil BUB’s Big FUND was created for.

Helping special needs pets like Stark does not just change individual outcomes, it raises the standard of care for all animals. When we prioritize the pets who need the most support, we identify where systems fall short and push for solutions that benefit shelters, rescues, and families across the board. These animals show us where compassion, access, and resources are most urgently needed. When they receive care, it expands what is possible for every other pet who follows.
