In the heart of Central Texas, thousands of children wake up each day without access to the most basic healthcare. No checkups. No vaccines. Nowhere to turn when they are sick, anxious, or hurting. These are the children of our neighbors: families who are working hard to build a life, often navigating language barriers, economic hardship, and the complexities of the health system. For them, healthcare is not just difficult to access—it is completely out of reach.

Founded to meet a growing crisis, Lirios is the only clinic in Texas exclusively dedicated to uninsured children. We provide everything from well-child exams and school physicals to mental health counseling, chronic disease management, and prescription medications. All of our services are offered at no cost to families. Our team is bilingual, culturally responsive, and deeply rooted in the communities we serve. We do not just treat symptoms. We build trust, offer stability, and walk alongside families through every stage of their child’s development.

In 2024 alone, we cared for 1,374 children, delivered over 2,000 appointments, and administered nearly 5,000 vaccines. But behind every number is a story. A child who can finally attend school safely. A parent who sleeps easier knowing their child’s asthma is under control. A teen who finds hope through counseling.

Why LilyPads Was Started

Our founder's family has spent much time at UVA Children’s Hospital (and Boston Children's Hospital) when their daughter, Lily, was little and fighting for her life. The medical care was excellent — but the days were long, the nights were sleepless, and the costs piled up fast. They often felt like they were alone and drowning.

That’s where the seed for LilyPads was planted.

They wondered, *what if there was a better way?*

What is Mutual Aid?

**Mutual aid is “cooperation for the sake of the common good.” It’s getting people to come together to meet each other’s needs, recognizing that as humans, our survival is dependent on one another.**

Mutual Aid is a practice and politics that emphasizes solidarity rather than charity. It means we recognize that our well-being, health and dignity are all bound up in each other. It means that we understand our survival depends on cooperation, not competition. In this particular moment, we see that our health is also dependent on other people’s health, and we can literally save each other’s lives. Rather than disengage and feel powerless, mutual aid allows us to plug in where we can make the most impact — locally.

Mutual aid IS...

- Getting people together in your community to provide material support to each other
- Building relationships with your neighbors based on trust and common interest
- Making decisions by consensus rather than relying on authority and hierarchy
- Sharing things rather than hoarding things
- Treating no one as disposable
- Providing all kinds of support, ranging from food prep to childcare to translation to emotional support, and recognizing the value of all of them
- A political education opportunity, where we build the relationships and analysis to understand why we are in the conditions that we're in
- Preparation for the next disaster (natural or economic). Next time around we'll already have relationships with each other and know who is vulnerable and needs support
- A great jumping off point for other kinds of organizing and movement work

DC Mutual Aid Network

The DC Mutual Aid Network (DCMA) is a grassroots community-led effort looking to take care of each other and keep our city as safe as possible.

- DCMA is a decentralized, community-led effort, so there is no single group that runs the network.
- There are autonomous groups for Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Wards 7 & 8 are served together by one group.
- The DCMA Network is governed by the ward groups on topics of social media, website, fundraising, etc. The groups also share resources, best practices and offer referrals to other groups.

Ward 2 Efforts

Ward 2 Mutual Aid is part of the larger DCMA Network. Our concrete activities are:

- **Hotline** - Volunteers staff our warmline, where Ward 2 residents can call and request assistance.
- **Groceries** - We provide a grocery bag delivery to ~150 families that request it through our hotline or building captains. The bags include fresh produce, protein, dry goods, and requested household items.
- **Encampment Outreach** - We organize a supply drop to ~120 unhoused neighbors.
- **Building captains** - We organize with local residents to utilize their leadership and relational networks. Building captains check on neighbors, relay needs, and assist with food donations and distribution.
- **Back to school** - We organize with local parents to host a book and clothing swap.
- **Support for high risk/immuno-compromised individuals** - We have been partnering with local public housing buildings to drop off cleaning supplies, masks, and groceries.

Kids’ Club supports underserved youth in our community by awarding grants for programs for kids from birth to age 18 and beyond. 

Kids’ Club of Tarrytown & Sleepy Hollow provides support for underserved youth.  As a community organization, we marshal resources, increase local awareness, advocate for programming, and strengthen services to improve the lives of children and families. Empowering Youth in Cambodia helps disadvantaged urban youth access education, personal growth, and leadership opportunities.

Cambodia's youth demographic is one of the youngest in Southeast Asia, with over 60% of the population under 30. This rapid youth growth presents both a significant opportunity and a considerable challenge for the country’s future development.

**Empowering Youth in Cambodia (EYC)**, founded in 2006, focuses specifically on one of the most vulnerable segments of this youth population—those living in disadvantaged urban communities in Phnom Penh. Most parents of EYC students work in informal sectors as factory workers, waste pickers, tuk-tuk drivers, or street vendors, earning only a modest daily income—typically between $5 and $8. These jobs are unstable and lack job security, often leaving families living on less than $200 per month. Many of these young people are first-generation learners, balancing studies and work often without family support. Additionally, they face limited access to quality education and stable employment opportunities.

**EYC’s mission is to empower these youth through education, personal development, and leadership opportunities—helping them break the cycle of poverty and become active, contributing citizens.** 

Starting small with English and computer classes in Phnom Penh, EYC quickly grew into a respected NGO, reaching over 800 youth annually. Alumni became the organization’s backbone—returning as staff members, volunteers, and role models, creating a powerful youth-to-youth cycle of empowerment. 

Over the years, EYC expanded to multiple community centers, added programs like scholarships, leadership training, life skills, sports, arts, and STEM education. The scholarship program, in particular, has helped many students become the first in their families to graduate from high school and attend university. 

Today, EYC operates three vibrant community centers in Phnom Penh, offering a range of programs:

- **English, digital literacy, and STEM courses,** including coding and robotics
- **Scholarship support** for high school and university students
- **Leadership development** to build communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills
- **Life skills and extracurricular activities** in sports, arts, and mental health initiatives
- **Career guidance** and employability support
- **Volunteer and community engagement opportunities** with local and international partners

EYC’s holistic approach promotes not only academic skills but also confidence, resilience, and leadership. Its partnerships with other NGOs, the private sector, and educational institutions have expanded impact and trust within communities.

Looking ahead, EYC aims to strengthen its curricula, increase digital adoption, expand career pathways, deepen partnerships, and diversify funding to ensure long-term resilience. Providing NYC Public Schools with Training and Resources to Start and Sustain Student Journalism Programs and Publications

Press Pass NYC equips under-resourced NYC public schools with free faculty training, student resources and program support to launch or revive a student news publication – and keep it running. Our goal is to level the playing field in a city where a 2022 Baruch College study found 93 of the 100 highest poverty high schools had no student newspaper. Working on a news team gives teens the opportunity to develop their curiosity and passion by writing about topics that interest them, developing critical thinking, teamwork and leadership along with media literacy.

Since 2021, we’ve helped 30 NYC public schools start or revive a student news publication, online or in print, with 14 more coming in the 2025-26 school year. Every donation goes toward supporting these budding news teams through fellowships for teachers and students.

- $500 funds an hands-on journalism workshop for students
- $1000 funds a Journalism Adviser Fellow's first year stipend

Providing multi-pronged support to 3000 under-privileged children daily. 

For over 7 decades, DCCW has been aspiring to live up to its mission to “give children a childhood and a future” by helping under-privileged children in and around Delhi who face challenges they cannot overcome.  We achieve this through programs in the areas of health, nutrition, pre-school education, vocational training, supervised homework schemes, rehabilitation of special needs children and educational sponsorship.  One of our best-known programs is PALNA, our home for lost and abandoned children, where alongside we run a very successful adoption program. Today, these services reach out to 3000 children daily through our 15 centres and are provided to them virtually free of cost. 

DCCW runs  on donations from corporates, institutions and individuals. 



All our programs are targeted at children from low-income families.



-	PALNA: our home and adoption centre for abandoned, lost and homeless children (one centre; 70-80 children resident at any time) 

-	Palna WeeKids: prepares under-privileged pre-school children for admission into schools (13 centres; 900+  beneficiaries annually)

-	Educational Sponsorship: Provides financial assistance to school-going children ( ~900 beneficiaries annually)

-	Supervised Homework Scheme – helps school-going children with their schoolwork (14 centres; ~300 beneficiaries annually)

-	Vocational Training: Teaches income-generating skills (Computers, Tally, Beauty culture, Tailoring) to adolescent girls, mostly school-dropouts (13 centres ; ~1000 beneficiaries annually) 

-	Bal Chetna – provides day-care and rehabilitation therapies to special needs children to help them achieve their potential (Pre-pandemic 3 centres ~100 beneficiaries; only one centre re-started to date)



DCCW is being run by a professional and very dedicated team and an Executive Committee (governing board) of volunteer members. DCCW has received accreditation from Credibility Alliance, Give India, Benevity, CAF America, testifying integrity and transparency as a donation-supported NGO. 



Delhi Council for Child Welfare

Friends of Hope (HOPE) is a nonprofit whose mission is to build a nation where every Filipino can achieve their full potential.

HOPE targets the most vulnerable populations to create systemic change in three main service areas, specifically **Education**, **Agriculture/Livelihood**, and **Environment**.

**Education** - HOPE invests in education infrastructure to help turn the tide for millions of Filipino children that rely on public schools to secure their futures. We work with the Philippines' Department of Education and underserved communities across the Philippines to build bright and beautiful public school classrooms for young learners, no matter how remotely located they are. To date, HOPE has constructed 130 classrooms and counting since 2012.

**Agriculture/Livelihood** - HOPE supports some of the most marginalized members of the country – smallholder coconut farmers. We carry out interventions to enrich their livelihoods such as seedling distribution, technical support provision, and building linkages to markets and micro-entrepreneurship opportunities. To date, HOPE’s agriculture programs have enriched the livelihoods of nearly 30,000 farmers and their families through the replanting and distribution of close to 2 million trees.

**Environment** - HOPE implements the Aling Tindera (or women micro-entrepreneurs) program, a market-based solution against the plastic pollution crisis. We engage women micro-entrepreneurs and informal workers to manage collection points, where members of the community can sell their plastic waste. This mechanism provides incremental income to the women, encourages behavior change among households, and helps clean up the environment. Currently, there are over 140+ Aling Tindera sites all over the country, helping address plastic waste management issues in their communities.

Our efforts with our partners are increasingly visible in the country, positioning us as champions for responsible business and social justice. Give Us The Floor provides 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and allies in distress with the peer-positive human connection that they are too often missing. Through a safe, inclusive mobile app, youth ages 13 to 17 and young adults ages 18 to 24 can access peer support in a youth-only community, breaking the isolation and shame cycles they are experiencing. Trained youth facilitate the confidential group discussion spaces, and participants help each other with prevalent mental health and social issues such as depression, isolation, anxiety, identity, discrimination, family and school challenges, bullying, relationships, domestic violence, and body image.

Within this supportive community:

- Youth in distress from all backgrounds and locations across the US have 24/7 access to peer support in a safe, non-judgmental, and confidential environment.
- Participants communicate anonymously as often as they wish via closed group chats and discussion channels (no one-on-one communication is possible)
- They share daily life struggles, insights and accomplishments, encourage each other, and provide non-judgmental feedback without fear of stigma, taboo or shame
- Groups are organized by age and primary discussion topic to keep the chats relevant and relatable
- Youth who need adult help are quickly identified and given resources to help them.

Research reveals that increased isolation is contributing to the rapid deterioration of mental health and wellbeing. It’s affecting youth way more than adults: Experiencing social isolation and loneliness [during adolescence/ childhood] increased the risk of depression up to 9 years later. \*

**After only 1 month with Give Us The Floor:**

- **83% of the participants report that they feel less lonely**
- **78% were helped with their struggles**
- **77% feel better about themselves**
- **70% experienced improved mental health**

- Nearly 50% of LGBTQ youth age 13-17 seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year and 18% of them did attempt suicide:\*\*
- LGBTQ youth of color reported higher rates than their white peers: 12% of white youth attempted suicide compared to 21% of Native / Indigenous youth, 20% of Middle ------- Eastern / Northern African youth, 19% of Black youth, 17% of multiracial youth, 16% of Latinx youth, and 12% of Asian / Pacific Islander youth\*\*
- LGBTQ youth who had access to spaces that affirmed their sexual orientation and gender identity reported lower rates of attempting suicide \*\*
- 60% of LGBTQ youth who wanted mental health support in the past year were not able to access care, including nearly 3 in 5 transgender youth and more than 3 in 5 cisgender youth\*\*

An integrated and sustainable community-based orphan care program, championing the African kinship foster care and education.

1.0 Background of The Mango Tree Kenya (TMTK)

TMTK was established in 2006 with the primary aim of providing integrated community-based support to orphans and families affected by HIV/AIDS in Homa Bay County, Kenya. This region, situated along the shores of Lake Victoria, was one of the hardest hit by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The devastating impact of the virus left thousands of children orphaned and facing uncertain futures. TMTK was created as a response to this crisis, working towards ensuring that orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) receive the care, support, and opportunities they need to thrive.

The organization envisions "a thriving child in a safe community and a healthy environment" and works toward this vision through its mission: to facilitate mechanisms that guarantee children’s safety, growth, and development within safe communities and healthy environments. This is done primarily through capacity-building initiatives aimed at empowering individuals and communities to take charge of their situations.



1.1 Programmatic Approach

TMTK’s programmatic approach is built on three guiding models: a Community-Based Approach, a Human-Centered Design Model, and a Co-Creation Model. These models allow the communities to be the key decision-makers in addressing their challenges, with TMTK acting as a facilitator. TMTK works through three key programmatic areas:

a) The Mango Tree Orphan Support Trust: This program addresses the immediate needs of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). It focuses on creating safe, nurturing environments for these children by providing family-based foster care. Additionally, it emphasizes climate-smart agriculture, which reduces the harmful effects of climate change while providing sustainable livelihoods for families.

b) The Mango Tree Education Trust: This program focuses on providing access to quality education for vulnerable girls, survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), adolescent girls, and young women. Through the construction and completion of The Mango Tree Girls School and Rescue Center, TMTK is working to provide a safe and supportive environment for vulnerable girls to access secondary education.

c) Mango Tree Farmers Cooperative: This initiative transforms subsistence farming among OVC caregivers into sustainable agribusiness ventures, allowing families to generate income and improve their livelihoods.

The organization’s projects focus on rural areas in Kenya that have been deeply affected by HIV and AIDS. Poverty, limited access to education, environmental destruction, and resource depletion pose major challenges to these communities, where many children drop out of school after primary education. TMTK also addresses climate change, working to create sustainable solutions for the future.



1.2 Governance Structure

TMTK is governed by a Board of Trustees (BoT) with long-standing experience in various fields. The BoT provides strategic oversight to the organization, while the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), who also serves as the Director, manages daily operations. The organization employs 20 staff members who possess expertise in community programming, education development, and climate-smart agriculture. These staff members are supported by a network of 175 village volunteers.



1.3 Core Values

The organization's core values reflect its commitment to empowering communities and fostering sustainable development. These values include:

Respect and Collaboration: TMTK builds genuine relationships with people who share common goals, respecting local knowledge and expertise. The organization believes rural communities can lead significant changes in their lives, and its work builds on the communities’ solutions.

Accountability and Integrity: TMTK is accountable to the people it aims to assist, as well as to the government and its partners. The organization maintains transparency, strong financial accountability, and honest communication.

Courage and Innovation: TMTK supports communities in challenging the root causes of poverty and advocates for gender equality and child rights. It also protects vulnerable groups from harm.

Sustainability and Empowerment: TMTK’s projects are tailored to meet the real needs of the people, encouraging grassroots empowerment and promoting self-sufficiency. This approach also helps stimulate social responsibility within the community.



2.0 Critical Success Factors (CSFs)

TMTK’s approach has led to several significant achievements:

Community-Based Orphan Care: TMTK has provided community-based care to over 8,000 orphans. This approach, which moves away from institutional orphanages, offers a nurturing environment for the children within their own communities.

Community Sensitization and empowerment: TMTK’s participatory processes have helped change the mindset of local communities. Many now understand the importance of contributing their time and resources toward their own development, care for their children, involved in livelihood improvement and environmental conservation. 

Local Volunteers: TMTK has developed and engaged a group of local champions, including village volunteers and community development support committees. These individuals act as essential links between the communities and project staff.

Alumni Network: Over 4,000 orphans and vulnerable children supported by TMTK have completed tertiary education and are now working in various professional fields across Kenya. They form a formidable alumni network that actively supports TMTK’s work.

Support for Children with Disabilities: TMTK has provided corrective surgeries and education for over 100 children with disabilities, including the blind, deaf, and physically challenged, many of whom have gone on to find employment.



Partnerships: TMTK has developed reciprocal partnerships with organizations such as TMT (UK), Egpaf, LVCT Health, GlobalGiving, and B1G1. These partnerships have provided financial and technical support for TMTK’s programs.

Advocacy Networks: TMTK is a member of various networks, including the Homa Bay Sustainable Development Trust (HOSDET), Lake Region Food Systems Network, and FEMNET, amplifying the voices of vulnerable groups in the community.



3. Key Areas of Intervention

TMTK focuses on five key areas:

a) Family-Based Care: Promotes community-based, family-oriented care for OVC as a better alternative to institutional orphanages.

b) Education and Skills Development: Provides scholarships, builds school infrastructure, and offers vocational training for disadvantaged children, especially girls.

c) Health and Wellbeing: Supports children affected by HIV/AIDS, conducts corrective surgeries, provides sexual and reproductive health education, and offers water and sanitation services.

d) Environment and Livelihoods: Promotes climate-smart agriculture and environmental conservation while supporting alternative livelihoods for vulnerable households.

e) Institutional Capacity Development: Strengthens governance and management structures to ensure organizational sustainability.



4. Achievements 

TMTK’s impact includes:

•	Supporting 8,000 orphans in their communities and transitioned 35 orphans from institutional care to family-based homes.

•	Enabling over 3,000 children to complete their education and graduate with professional and technical skills.

•	Empowering 1,692 farmers with climate-smart agricultural skills.

•	Establishing 1,127 women-led village enterprises.

•	Rescuing over 100 girls from sexual exploitation.

•	Planting over 314,000 tree seedlings as part of its environmental conservation efforts.

Reach A Hand Uganda (RAHU) is a youth-centered nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young people with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to make informed life choices. Founded in 2011, RAHU focuses primarily on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), ensuring that young people across Uganda have access to accurate information and quality services.

Our SRHR work includes HIV/AIDs awareness and prevention, information and access to modern contraception, livelihoods, safer sex options, and comprehensive life skills development. At the heart of our mission is the drive to challenge negative social norms that limit young people’s access to quality SRHR resources and services.

We operate in more than 53 districts across Uganda, engaging youth ages 10–19 and 20–30, who are faced with SRHR challenges. We partner with young people living with HIV, refugees, youth whom are in- and out-of-school, and those living with disabilities. We also work closely with men—as users and advocates of family planning, champions, and satisfied users a—recognizing their critical influence on reproductive health decisions within families and communities.

A cornerstone of our impact is our national network of **836+ trained peer educators**, who lead community mobilization, SRHR information sharing, and have a significant impact on service uptake. Their efforts are supported by interpersonal communication agents who promote male involvement in family planning, including informed uptake of vasectomy.

Our digital communications hub, **SautiPlus**, amplifies RAHU’s work by creating and disseminating youth-friendly SRHR content to millions of young people and the adults who influence them—parents, teachers, cultural leaders, policymakers, and more.

Globally, 97% of girls benefiting from Room to Read's Girls’ Education Program successfully advance to the next grade level, and 96% graduate secondary school. Five years after the program, 79% of graduates are either employed or enrolled in higher education.

Room to Read’s tried-and-true program builds girls’ skills while helping entire communities understand and support gender equality education.
