The organization was founded on a simple yet powerful belief that every parent, regardless of their background, can contribute to their child’s learning journey. Over the past decade, Saajha has emerged as a key actor in India’s education reform movement by demonstrating how collective parent and community participation can drive measurable improvements in learning outcomes and school accountability. Organizational History

Saajha began its journey in 2014 by working with School Management Committees in Delhi, a government-mandated body of parents and teachers responsible for school governance. Through training and facilitation, Saajha empowered parents and community members to take active ownership of school development plans, improve school functioning, and advocate for better learning conditions.

As the organization grew, it recognized that while school-level governance was crucial, the deeper challenge lay in learning at home, particularly in the foundational literacy and numeracy of children in the early grades. Many children in India complete primary school without being able to read simple sentences or solve basic arithmetic problems. Saajha responded by shifting its focus toward strengthening parental support for foundational learning through home-based and community-led interventions.

Our Approach 

Our approach focuses on equipping parents from low-income communities to engage more confidently and consistently in their children’s learning at home. We work with parents whose children are studying in Grades I to V in government schools across  Hindi-speaking regions, helping them take an active role in improving their children’s learning outcomes.

Through our work, we help parents better understand the learning levels of their children and take informed actions to support their progress. We provide regular information on their child’s learning status, along with simple, practical guidance on learning tools and strategies they can use at home. The content we share is tailored to match each child’s current learning level, following the Teaching at the Right Level approach. This method has been shown to have a significant impact on foundational learning.

This journey involves two stages: identification and support.

Identification

We begin by identifying parents who may benefit from our program during Parent Teacher Meetings held periodically in government schools. At these meetings, a Saajha team member or a Saajhedar, a trained community member who often shares similar lived experiences, introduces the program and shares how it can support families. This ensures that parents who are looking for support know how to access it.

After expressing interest, parents complete a simple opt-in process through our WhatsApp chatbot. They are then guided through an introductory conversation that provides an overview of the program. Once this step is completed, the parent becomes part of our network and begins receiving regular support.

Support

Our support program is structured around a series of monthly learning cycles. Each cycle begins with an assessment of the child’s reading and math abilities, conducted through a phone call by a trained parent from the community. These assessments use standard tools developed by ASER to evaluate the child’s ability to read in Hindi and solve basic arithmetic problems.

Based on the results, we share curated learning content with the parent via WhatsApp that aligns with the child’s current learning level, following the Teaching at the Right Level approach. To keep parents engaged, we send reminder messages every two weeks and conduct a follow up assessment after six weeks to track the child’s progress. This cycle ensures that support remains timely, relevant, and responsive to each child’s needs.

A) Conducting an external impact evaluation to assess the effectiveness of the Saajha model by partnering with IIM Ahmedabad.

B) Extend partnerships with state governments to replicate Saajha’s model in new geographies.

Saajha

Providing equitable access to orthodontic care to improve self-confidence, health, and resilience of underserved youth in Oregon

As the Oregon Health Plan doesn't cover orthodontic treatment for non-cleft palate youths in Oregon, there is a significant amount of youths with handicapping malocclusion who are not able to receive the medically necessary treatment. This means that any child who suffers from malocclusions that impair eating, sleeping, breathing, and speaking must raise an average of $6,000 (that is if there are no complications) to receive corrective orthodontic treatment. This  barrier has created a built-in exclusion of all OHP populations in Oregon, adding to not only medical needs, downstream exacerbated complication, lower graduation rate, and increased Emergency department use, but also enormous behavioral/mental challenges resulting from relentless bullying.

ASK receives referrals from DHS, school counselors, teachers, coaches, clinicians and anyone else who works professionally with children. Orthodontists screen for medical need and arrange for orthodontic treatment if applicant is accepted into the ASK program. We reserve funds for the most severe cases and monitor school grades throughout.

ASK requires participants to volunteer four hours per month in a community-based organization during the 18-to-24-month treatment (learning how to work and adding experience to a college or work resume). We also require that youths that apply to our program lift their grades to at least a "C" in all classes before we start treatment, and then maintain that minimum requirement during the treatment period. These requirements, along with the actual braces change the trajectory of the lives of students who otherwise are at risk for not graduating high school. As a consequence of their success in school, we help kids find a path forward with secondary education, apprenticeships, or simply finding a job. This leads to a higher lifetime income, better health, lower mortality and incarceration rates.

All treatments are carried out by ASK partner orthodontists who are board certified and licensed by the State of Oregon. ASK follows the scientific process and works with the OHSU Community Research team to quantify our impact on communities through peer reviewed studies. Although we cover all 36 counties in Oregon, ASK has just entered into a partnership with OHSU to treat youths in the Portland area as a means to educate more orthodontists in Oregon.  

ASK has existed since 2004 and use orthodontic screeners as a backup to review the initial consultation results. We do that to ensure that the outcomes are reviewed as objectively as possible.

ASK uses REAL-D data to Increase the number of kids form marginalized populations who will receive orthodontic treatment. and we also aim to expand ASK's reach in Oregon so more OHP youth have access to orthodontic treatment. 

Oregon youths who receive much needed orthodontic treatment because of handicapping malocclusions, use their local emergency department less. This is partly because they are now seeing a dentist and an orthodontist on a regular basis as is their whole family. 

Because of the ASK focus on high school graduation and volunteering outside their home, the ASK candidates are also more likely to become self-sufficient and less likely to need entitlement support. All this helps decrease healthcare cost and increase health outcomes.

A Smile for Kids employs a total of 4 employees. 1.5 full time employees focus entirely on managing the ASK program. This includes communicating with the referring professionals, family, resource caregivers, applicant, DHS, orthodontists, dentists, oral surgeons, (schools to monitor grades), and any other organization or person who is needed to help the youth through the ASK program. This also includes after hours incoming calls from any of the kids we currently have active, who need encouragement when things are "rough". 

Because we work with 43% resource (foster) youths, we also work closely with kids from trauma affected backgrounds which adds to the complexity of carrying out the program. Since we are a small team, we maximize the functions of several electronic databases and other software - all HIPAA compliant and following Personal Health Information standards when sharing records with medical professionals.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

After many years in the financial industry, our founders - Marc and Daniel - abandoned their careers in order to help the underprivileged in our society. Without knowing what to expect, Child’s Dream was brought to life in October 2003 with the help of their close friends and family members. Both realised very soon that they had found new meaning in life and that they were able to put all of their newly gained motivation and endless energy into effective help for children in need.

As of February 2024 there have been 265,295 total direct beneficiaries been reached by ongoing projects. The total number of direct beneficiaries reached by past and ongoing projects is 1,308,329. As of February 2024 there have been 1,002 ongoing projects been supported.

As a result, individuals are not able to foster the development of their countries and communities, perpetuating poverty and inequalities.

There are around 30,000 women in Ethiopia living with devastating childbirth injuries called obstetric fistula, because they don't know help is available. An estimated 1,000 women suffer a new fistula injury every year. Catherine’s trailblazing **Hamlin Model of Care** - today replicated around the world - finds, treats and holistically heals these women, restoring their lives.

Women living with childbirth injuries suffer great trauma. Following obstructed labour, they are left incontinent and usually lose their baby. They are shunned from their community and live hidden not knowing help available.

In a single year, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia treats more than 6,000 patients and perform more than 2,000 surgeries.

We also provide counseling and a range of vocational training to support nearly 1,000 women in their recovery. A woman's healing journey starts the moment she arrives at a Hamlin fistula hospital. She is given a Comfort Package containing a Hamlin blanket that has been lovingly made by a volunteer, hygiene items, a new nightgown and slippers, and a homecoming dress.

These are utter luxuries for the many women who arrive at a Hamlin hospital without shoes, wearing the only stained clothes they own. When they wrap themselves in their Hamlin blanket, they feel the warm embrace of people like you.

Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia's work is centered in Ethiopia, a country with one of the highest fertility and maternal mortality rates in the world. Our vision is simple: To eradicate obstetric fistula. Forever.

For more than six decades, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia has implemented our world-recognized approach to the holistic treatment of women and girls with obstetric fistulas — severe injuries resulting from prolonged, unrelieved and obstructed labor, typically in the absence of skilled birth attendants.

In 93% of cases, the mother suffers not only dramatic tissue damage, but she also loses her new baby. Nerve damage and weakened pelvic muscles make many daily tasks unmanageable. And, women are also often ostracized from their communities – cut off from avenues to leading a full, healthy and happy life.

The Hamlin Model of Care – The World's Leading Approach to Treating Obstetric Fistula

Dr Catherine Hamlin pioneered an approach to treating obstetric fistula, including developing a new surgical technique, that dramatically changes the lives of women and girls — in some cases in no more than an hour.

The Hamlin Model of Care is unique because it is not just about repairing injury, but restoring dignity. Hamlin's Rehabilitation and Reintegration Program at Desta Mender offers counseling, literacy and numeracy classes. Additional programs for vocational and life skills training help women find sustainable employment or establish their own small businesses. Today, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia is staffed by more than 550 Ethiopian medical professionals and five regional hospitals have been established to respond to the significant demand for fistula surgery.

To accelerate change for women in Ethiopia, our Project Zero teams will go from door-to-door, in every Woreda (district) to identify women living with historic fistula cases and organize care and treatment. At the same time, we will strengthen maternal healthcare services, to reduce the incidence of birth injuries, and increase awareness, so women have the tools and knowledge they need to give birth safely. Lasting change for women and girls requires building a workforce of skilled birth attendants. Through our Hamlin College of Midwives, we recruit women from rural communities in Ethiopia to learn the Hamlin Model of Care during a four-year Bachelor of Science in Midwifery program.  The curriculum is fully certified and includes the precondition that students conduct at least 40 deliveries before they graduate. Upon graduation, Hamlin midwives return to their villages – today staffing over 90 rural midwifery clinics in remote areas.

Maximize Meaningful Education Association (M2E) was officially established in 2023. However, our work started in 2012 after our inspiring trip to Rwanda. In 2015, we partnered with the Ministry of Education of Rwanda piloting an innovative education model to demonstrate that similar education outcomes in private schools are possible in public schools.  We developed the education model at Mubuga Primary School from 2015-2018 and then introduced it at Bukane Primary School in 2018, to validate how the model can impact an already successful school. The model at both schools has delivered significant performance improvements and is proven and scalable. The next phase consists of scaling the model to other regions in Rwanda and eventually other African countries.   The M2E team consists of 7 members: the two founders acting as managing directors; one operations lead and 4 educational experts on the ground in Rwanda. M2E is headquartered in Switzerland, with an affiliate in the US. M2E has its local NGO registered in Rwanda with plans to grow its operations as the educational model gets further scaled. The Founders, Monique Bobadilla and Markus Gemuend, are actively engaged since the start, Markus lived and worked in Sub-Saharan Africa, and both frequently spend time in Rwanda to guide the progress to continuously establish and strengthen the necessary stakeholder relationships.

Orquesta Filarmonica de Medellin - FILARMED

SACS is a centre of teaching, cultural and sporting excellence that promotes critical thinking and social responsibility.  

To promote excellence within an all-round education, to prepare boys to play a constructive role as compassionate, thinking individuals in society. 
 
SACS is the oldest high school in South Africa, founded in September 1829. It is arguably the most magnificent setting at the foot of Table Mountain and Devils peak. The school prides itself on the balanced education it provides, the world-class facilities on offer, the fact that SACS men strive for excellence in all spheres of school life and that it places a strong emphasis on high moral values. 

Far from resting contentedly on its 186 year-old record of growth and excellence, SACS in the 1980s and early 90s, led the Open Schools' Movement, making it possible, without the formal sanction of the Nationalist Government, for the integration of South African schools. Boys 'of colour,' Muslim and Christian, had been enrolled at SACS throughout the 19th century but, segregated for 85 odd years by the Cape School Board's Act of 1905 and the subsequent blight of apartheid, the school had the unusual satisfaction of  re-opening  its doors in 1992 to boys of all races. One of only four schools world-wide privileged enough to possess its own Rhodes Scholarship, SACS has attracted to itself pupils possessing the calibre, academically, culturally and in the sporting sphere to qualify for consideration for this, 'our greatest prize.'

Nyanam is a restorative justice organization preparing widows to lead positive community transformation.

We are a restorative justice organization, preparing widows to be leaders of positive social transformation in their communities through integrated programs in leadership, health, livelihoods and justice. Our work alleviates widowhood poverty, mitigates the impact of HIV/AIDS, and gives widows the tools to tackle oppressive cultural, economic, and social practices that undermine widows’ dignity and limit their agency.

Past and current activities 
Our unit of operation is the leadership circles, which are self-led widow-to-widow support groups that meet on a weekly basis. We also have youth mentorship groups that organize and meet weekly during school holidays. In the leadership circles, widows offer each other spiritual, emotional, and economic support, replacing isolation and loneliness with communities of friendship. These circles consolidate their collective voice to guide the design and implementation of Nyanam’s work. As an organization, we have five main program areas that guide how we engage with Nyanam widows and their children. We use capacity strengthening as the core approach in implementing our programs. Our holistic interventions in leadership, livelihoods, health, justice, and youth education are delivered through our unique curriculum called Voice of Change, a Nyanam’s unique and widow centric training curriculum tailored to respond to the needs and concerns of widows, and uses storytelling, deep listening, and social action as approaches for community transformation. 

Leadership: Widowhood thrusts women into household leadership in patriarchal culture where male headship is valued and expected. We affirm the leadership of widows and harness their potential for community transformation. From the leadership circles, we have trained 640 widows in our various capacities who have in turned trained 780 widows in the same knowledge and skills in their groups. Further, leadership circles conduct Bible studies for spiritual development, personal sharing for emotional support, and table banking for economic development. 

Livelihoods: Our livelihood program has two main components; economic empowerment and sustainable agriculture. We train Nyanam widows in sustainable agriculture, financial literacy, table banking and micro- business skills. We offer them seed funding for their group table banking and businesses, we provide them with vegetable seeds for planting, and new gardening resources (multistorey gardens). 

Health: Nyanam widows' health and well-being is our primary focus. In this program we train our widows in trauma healing, preventative health and counselling. Through our professional and trained counselors, we provide widows with individual and group counseling sessions which support and addresses each widows’ nuanced situation and unique set of challenges, as well as mental health workshops with specific themes at the request of the widows. Further, we have a team of trained community health volunteers that provide monthly health talk sessions in the different leadership circles as well as home visits and health referrals where needed. 

Justice: Access to, ownership and control of land is both a human right and an economic justice for widows. In this program, we raise awareness on widowhood issues and take action to address injustices related to land, housing and widows’ rights. We ensure this through community leaders education and training, conducting conflict resolution sessions among Nyanam widows and their relatives, provide direct legal support to widows who are pursuing their land and property inheritance and succession, provide housing support  by building Nyanam widows dignified houses in partnership with other stakeholders and undertake policy advocacy with different government agencies and policy makers on widows human rights. 

Youth Education: Widows’ children are particularly a population in need of support, as poverty limits the future of both the widows and their families. Guided by our 3-year youth education strategy, we provide capacity training to Nyanam widows children in comprehensive health education, technology and robotics and environmental justice. The training is multiplied in the youth mentorship groups by a group of trained Nyanam youth mentors supported by trained widow matrons. In addition, we provide need based secondary school education sponsorship to widows children to improves student access to secondary education, but also builds students’ communication skills and goal setting through the application and mentorship process. 

In the future we are planning to serve up to 10,000 widows in our region and establish a widow-led cooperative business for financial security and additional income for Nyanam widows improving their financial status and muscles. Further, we seek to expand the work to other communities through training of different partners and stakeholders in our intervention the Voice of Change as a key driver for positive community transformation in the communities of widows.

What is Mutual Aid?

**Mutual aid is “cooperation for the sake of the common good.” It’s getting people to come together to meet each other’s needs, recognizing that as humans, our survival is dependent on one another.**

Mutual Aid is a practice and politics that emphasizes solidarity rather than charity. It means we recognize that our well-being, health and dignity are all bound up in each other. It means that we understand our survival depends on cooperation, not competition. In this particular moment, we see that our health is also dependent on other people’s health, and we can literally save each other’s lives. Rather than disengage and feel powerless, mutual aid allows us to plug in where we can make the most impact — locally.

Mutual aid IS...

- Getting people together in your community to provide material support to each other
- Building relationships with your neighbors based on trust and common interest
- Making decisions by consensus rather than relying on authority and hierarchy
- Sharing things rather than hoarding things
- Treating no one as disposable
- Providing all kinds of support, ranging from food prep to childcare to translation to emotional support, and recognizing the value of all of them
- A political education opportunity, where we build the relationships and analysis to understand why we are in the conditions that we're in
- Preparation for the next disaster (natural or economic). Next time around we'll already have relationships with each other and know who is vulnerable and needs support
- A great jumping off point for other kinds of organizing and movement work

Mutual aid IS NOT...

- Quid pro quo transactions
- Only for disasters or crises
- Charity or a way to "save" people
- A reason for a social safety net not to exist

DC Mutual Aid Network

The DC Mutual Aid Network (DCMA) is a grassroots community-led effort looking to take care of each other and keep our city as safe as possible.

- DCMA is a decentralized, community-led effort, so there is no single group that runs the network.
- There are autonomous groups for Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Wards 7 & 8 are served together by one group.
- The DCMA Network is governed by the ward groups on topics of social media, website, fundraising, etc. The groups also share resources, best practices and offer referrals to other groups.

Ward 2 Efforts

Ward 2 Mutual Aid is part of the larger DCMA Network. Our concrete activities are:

- **Hotline** - Volunteers staff our warmline, where Ward 2 residents can call and request assistance.
- **Groceries** - We provide a grocery bag delivery to ~150 families that request it through our hotline or building captains. The bags include fresh produce, protein, dry goods, and requested household items.
- **Encampment Outreach** - We organize a supply drop to ~120 unhoused neighbors.
- **Building captains** - We organize with local residents to utilize their leadership and relational networks. Building captains check on neighbors, relay needs, and assist with food donations and distribution.
- **Back to school** - We organize with local parents to host a book and clothing swap.
- **Support for high risk/immuno-compromised individuals** - We have been partnering with local public housing buildings to drop off cleaning supplies, masks, and groceries.
