Several years ago, Autism Empowerment joined us as a keynote voice, sharing a message grounded in dignity, acceptance, and the unwavering belief that autistic lives are rich with value and possibility. Child’s Dream exists to ensure that children and young adults in the Mekong Sub-Region, affected by inequality, grow up to be healthy and have access to quality education and employment opportunities. To achieve this, we design, implement, and partner to support interventions in Myanmar, Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Thailand. These interventions focus on education, employability, youth empowerment and leadership, and basic and essential healthcare.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

After many years in the financial industry, our founders - Marc and Daniel - abandoned their careers in order to help the underprivileged in our society. Without knowing what to expect, Child’s Dream was brought to life in October 2003 with the help of their close friends and family members. Both realised very soon that they had found new meaning in life and that they were able to put all of their newly gained motivation and endless energy into effective help for children in need.

As of February 2024 there have been 265,295 total direct beneficiaries been reached by ongoing projects. The total number of direct beneficiaries reached by past and ongoing projects is 1,308,329. As of February 2024 there have been 1,002 ongoing projects been supported.

Disadvantaged children and youth in Myanmar, Lao PDR, Cambodia, and Thailand encounter challenges in accessing and completing quality education, with disparities and inequalities persisting among different groups and regions. Alongside these educational challenges, health concerns such as limited healthcare access, insufficient health education, prevalent unsafe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) diseases, and maternal and child health issues vary across the countries. As a result, individuals are not able to foster the development of their countries and communities, perpetuating poverty and inequalities.

**Taawon (Welfare Association)** is a **non-profit**, **civic organization** launched in **Geneva** in the year **1983**, upon the initiative of a group of **Palestinian and Arab economists** and intellectuals.
**Taawon has become one of the largest organizations operating in Palestine and the diaspora camps in Lebanon**, whereby it touches the lives of **more than one million Palestinians** on an annual basis, with half of these beneficiaries being **women**.

Founded in 2013, **Simple Education Foundation (SEF)** is dedicated to transforming education in India’s government schools by empowering teachers to create meaningful and impactful learning experiences. Our work began with **Prayog Shala**, a community learning center in Delhi, and has since expanded across multiple states, impacting over 160,000 teachers and students.

**Our Programs and Journey**

In 2016, SEF took a significant step by partnering with the state government of Jammu & Kashmir to launch a teacher training program for over 85,000 teachers. This success marked a turning point, allowing us to dive deeper into our mission of teacher development and educational transformation.

That same year, we started working in Uttarakhand, where we established a community learning center in the village of Gular. This program has since evolved into several initiatives, including the Sashak Prathamik program, which today works with five primary schools in the Tehri Garhwal region. We also collaborate with the Narendra Nagar block to develop and facilitate their mentor teacher coaching and training programs.

In 2017, we launched our Centers of Excellence program in Delhi, working with seven government primary schools. Today, we continue to partner with three of these schools, focusing on enhancing learning outcomes and teacher effectiveness.

By 2021, SEF had extended its partnership with the Delhi government and SCERT to design and implement a competency-based teacher training program aimed at strengthening teacher competencies and the mentor teacher program across the state.

This year, we expanded our work to include collaborations with the state governments of Uttarakhand and Punjab. Our efforts focus on delivering comprehensive teacher development programs that include both training and coaching, developed in close partnership with block and district resource officials.

Our newest initiative, Teachers for Tomorrow (formerly Future Teacher Program), launched in 2022, is designed to equip aspiring teachers with the skills and mindset necessary to become exceptional educators. Under this program, we aim to ensure that these future educators are fully prepared to lead classrooms that inspire and nurture the next generation.

**Our Achievements**

•	Impacted more than 160,000 teachers across Delhi, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir.

•	Established eight government partnership schools, setting new standards for quality education.

•	Team members and individuals associated with SEF have been selected as fellows with prestigious global organizations such as Acumen, the Dalai Lama Program, WISE Qatar, Teach for All, and more.

•	SEF has participated in and presented at national and international conferences, contributing to thought leadership in the field of education through research papers and findings.

•	Recognized as a “Great Place to Work” for three consecutive years.

**Future Plans**

Looking ahead, SEF is focused on scaling our impact across multiple states and programs. Currently, under the Centers of Excellence program within our Government Partner School Program, we work with eight schools in Uttarakhand and Delhi. Our State In-Service Teacher Training Programs span Delhi, Punjab, and Uttarakhand, and in 2024, we aim to cumulatively impact over 1.5 lakh teachers through workshops, coaching programs, training sessions, and the provision of tools and resources.

Through our Teachers for Tomorrow program, which focuses on pre-service teacher education, we will work with over 2,000 aspiring teachers across several institutes in Delhi. This year, we also plan to pilot innovative programs that will help define and refine our strategy for developing the teachers of the future.

Our journey has been bolstered by the support of several esteemed organizations, including the Wipro Foundation, InfoEdge, Max India Foundation, Anu Agha and Meher Padamji Family Office, the Bikchandani Family Office, Padmini, V&A, Forest Essentials, Boston Consulting Group, and others. At YAH, we envision a world where housing is decommodified, houselessness does not exist, and everyone is guaranteed a safe, quality, and permanently affordable home. We believe those closest to the issues are closest to the solutions. We fight to transform the housing system into one in which landlords and the real estate industry do not profit off historically marginalized communities, where tenants have power and decision making over their housing, and where young people have an influential voice in shaping the housing system. There are around 30,000 women in Ethiopia living with devastating childbirth injuries called obstetric fistula, because they don't know help is available. An estimated 1,000 women suffer a new fistula injury every year. Catherine’s trailblazing **Hamlin Model of Care** - today replicated around the world - finds, treats and holistically heals these women, restoring their lives.

Women living with childbirth injuries suffer great trauma. Following obstructed labour, they are left incontinent and usually lose their baby. They are shunned from their community and live hidden not knowing help available.

In a single year, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia treats more than 6,000 patients and perform more than 2,000 surgeries.

We also provide counseling and a range of vocational training to support nearly 1,000 women in their recovery. A woman's healing journey starts the moment she arrives at a Hamlin fistula hospital. She is given a Comfort Package containing a Hamlin blanket that has been lovingly made by a volunteer, hygiene items, a new nightgown and slippers, and a homecoming dress.

These are utter luxuries for the many women who arrive at a Hamlin hospital without shoes, wearing the only stained clothes they own. When they wrap themselves in their Hamlin blanket, they feel the warm embrace of people like you.

Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia's work is centered in Ethiopia, a country with one of the highest fertility and maternal mortality rates in the world. Our vision is simple: To eradicate obstetric fistula. Forever.

For more than six decades, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia has implemented our world-recognized approach to the holistic treatment of women and girls with obstetric fistulas — severe injuries resulting from prolonged, unrelieved and obstructed labor, typically in the absence of skilled birth attendants.

In 93% of cases, the mother suffers not only dramatic tissue damage, but she also loses her new baby. Nerve damage and weakened pelvic muscles make many daily tasks unmanageable. And, women are also often ostracized from their communities – cut off from avenues to leading a full, healthy and happy life.

The Hamlin Model of Care – The World's Leading Approach to Treating Obstetric Fistula

Dr Catherine Hamlin pioneered an approach to treating obstetric fistula, including developing a new surgical technique, that dramatically changes the lives of women and girls — in some cases in no more than an hour.

The Hamlin Model of Care is unique because it is not just about repairing injury, but restoring dignity. Hamlin's Rehabilitation and Reintegration Program at Desta Mender offers counseling, literacy and numeracy classes. Additional programs for vocational and life skills training help women find sustainable employment or establish their own small businesses. Today, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia is staffed by more than 550 Ethiopian medical professionals and five regional hospitals have been established to respond to the significant demand for fistula surgery.

To accelerate change for women in Ethiopia, our Project Zero teams will go from door-to-door, in every Woreda (district) to identify women living with historic fistula cases and organize care and treatment. At the same time, we will strengthen maternal healthcare services, to reduce the incidence of birth injuries, and increase awareness, so women have the tools and knowledge they need to give birth safely. Lasting change for women and girls requires building a workforce of skilled birth attendants. Through our Hamlin College of Midwives, we recruit women from rural communities in Ethiopia to learn the Hamlin Model of Care during a four-year Bachelor of Science in Midwifery program.  The curriculum is fully certified and includes the precondition that students conduct at least 40 deliveries before they graduate. Upon graduation, Hamlin midwives return to their villages – today staffing over 90 rural midwifery clinics in remote areas.

Empowering Youth in Cambodia helps disadvantaged urban youth access education, personal growth, and leadership opportunities.

Cambodia's youth demographic is one of the youngest in Southeast Asia, with over 60% of the population under 30. This rapid youth growth presents both a significant opportunity and a considerable challenge for the country’s future development.

**Empowering Youth in Cambodia (EYC)**, founded in 2006, focuses specifically on one of the most vulnerable segments of this youth population—those living in disadvantaged urban communities in Phnom Penh. Most parents of EYC students work in informal sectors as factory workers, waste pickers, tuk-tuk drivers, or street vendors, earning only a modest daily income—typically between $5 and $8. These jobs are unstable and lack job security, often leaving families living on less than $200 per month. Many of these young people are first-generation learners, balancing studies and work often without family support. Additionally, they face limited access to quality education and stable employment opportunities.

**EYC’s mission is to empower these youth through education, personal development, and leadership opportunities—helping them break the cycle of poverty and become active, contributing citizens.** 

Starting small with English and computer classes in Phnom Penh, EYC quickly grew into a respected NGO, reaching over 800 youth annually. Alumni became the organization’s backbone—returning as staff members, volunteers, and role models, creating a powerful youth-to-youth cycle of empowerment. 

Over the years, EYC expanded to multiple community centers, added programs like scholarships, leadership training, life skills, sports, arts, and STEM education. The scholarship program, in particular, has helped many students become the first in their families to graduate from high school and attend university. 

Today, EYC operates three vibrant community centers in Phnom Penh, offering a range of programs:

- **English, digital literacy, and STEM courses,** including coding and robotics
- **Scholarship support** for high school and university students
- **Leadership development** to build communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills
- **Life skills and extracurricular activities** in sports, arts, and mental health initiatives
- **Career guidance** and employability support
- **Volunteer and community engagement opportunities** with local and international partners

EYC’s holistic approach promotes not only academic skills but also confidence, resilience, and leadership. Its partnerships with other NGOs, the private sector, and educational institutions have expanded impact and trust within communities.

Looking ahead, EYC aims to strengthen its curricula, increase digital adoption, expand career pathways, deepen partnerships, and diversify funding to ensure long-term resilience. Its ultimate vision is to be a model for youth empowerment in Cambodia—demonstrating how community-driven initiatives can transform lives, break cycles of poverty, and foster a new generation of leaders.

Empowering Youth in Cambodia

Whole Child International is a nonprofit, international child protection and development organization founded in 2004. 

Whole Child International works collaboratively with local partners, governmental and non-governmental, to ensure that children receive the quality of care they need to grow into resilient, productive citizens, regardless of where they live.  We use an evidence-informed approach, drawing on cutting edge child development research, to train caregivers, child protection authorities, and government actors to ensure the entire child protection and development system is focused on ensuring positive outcomes for the most vulnerable children.  

Our work in Nicaragua and El Salvador produced statistically significant improvements in cognitive and social functioning, as well as weight- and height-for-age, without substantial changes to the material environment or their diets.  We change the behavior of the adults around the children to provide relationship-centered care and transform children's developmental trajectory.  Developmentally supportive care in childhood is associated with better educational, economic, health (physical and mental), and social outcomes later in life; that is, providing quality care for today's children helps reduce poverty, conflict, and social inequities in the future.  

Women and children are disproportionately affected by violence, climate change, and poverty; they are also key to disrupting these harmful cycles.  Our approach strengthens families, both biological and not, by equipping caregivers with the skills they need to care for their children's holistic needs, emotional, developmental, nutritional, etc.  We work with childcare centers and providers in low-income and high-violence areas to improve the quality of care available to children who might otherwise not have access to these services.  We especially work with women -- both caregivers and those working in the child protection system -- to develop their capacity as community leaders and models for positive change.

Workshop Learning is a nonprofit educational organization, founded in 2010 in Philadelphia to serve under-resourced youth

Through real-world learning, robust community, and personal growth, Workshop Learning empowers young adults to pursue a life of security, connection, and purpose. 

We design learning experiences in which students hone their sense of self, shape a vision for what comes next, and build the skills they need to make that vision a reality. While we believe this is critical to flourishing for all students, our work centers on youth and emerging adults from the most marginalized communities. These students' dreams and talents are too often overlooked and they often feel alienated and left behind by education systems. 

Serving young people ages 14-24, Workshop Learning works in three spaces.  First, we assist the School District in operating and supporting a high school (the Workshop School).  Second, we’re piloting a new alternative postsecondary program (Workshop U). Third, we work with other educators, schools, and systems that want to adapt or learn from our approach.

Allies Against Slavery builds platforms and partnerships that accelerate data-driven solutions to human trafficking. 

Human trafficking is a hidden problem that thrives in the shadows of society. Myths and misconceptions are pervasive, and data is unreliable. As a result, victims aren’t identified, traffickers aren’t prosecuted, and solutions aren’t data-informed or well-coordinated.

But that is changing. Allies Against Slavery harnesses data to illuminate and eradicate human trafficking. Our tools help allies in the fight to identify victims, coordinate care, and take informed action. 

Our vision is clear: to ensure that every community across the United States has the data it needs to combat and prevent human trafficking. But we cannot achieve this vision alone. We need to leverage innovative, data-driven solutions and forge crucial partnerships to shine a light on trafficking and build a future where freedom and dignity are secured for all. Allies Against Slavery

Urban Peace Movement is an Oakland, CA based racial justice organization focussed on youth organizing and leadership development. 

Urban Peace Movement (UPM) was founded in 2009 to build youth leadership in Oakland/Alameda County to transform the social conditions that drive violence and mass incarceration in low-income communities of color. UPM envisions a world where youth of color are resilient and self-determined. Since its inception, UPM has served Alameda County communities of color through organizing, community building, healing events, and outreach. The organization’s work is designed with a deep understanding of these communities; in which their leadership/staff live and serve. UPM improves community well-being through:

1. **Youth Leadership Development:** UPM’s model of Healing-Centered Youth Organizing supports youth to increase their wellness and heal from trauma while empowering them to organize for positive community change.  UPM runs two youth leadership programs, the Determination Black Men’s Group and Leaders in Training program, across Alameda County for low-income/systems-impacted youth of color ages 14-26. 

2. **Community Healing:** UPM’s community healing work increases access to culturally-relevant mental health and healing resources and builds community belonging in Oakland/East Bay communities of color. UPM does this through healing and wellness festivals, healing circles, grief support circles, community vigils, and intensive case conferencing/service referrals for directly-impacted individuals including to mental health, housing, job placement, education, and childcare services. 

3. **Reimagining Safety and Justice:** UPM builds social change campaigns advocating for policies that create community-based alternatives to incarceration and real safety for youth of color and their families. UPM seeks an end to youth incarceration and reallocation of resources towards building blocks of well-being: healthcare, education, mental health treatment, etc.

- **The 1:4 Initiative:** Providing computers and digital literacy training to students in underserved communities, ensuring they are equipped for the future.
- **Smart Start Program:** Offering literacy and numeracy lessons to help out-of-school children transition into formal education.

What is Mutual Aid?

**Mutual aid is “cooperation for the sake of the common good.” It’s getting people to come together to meet each other’s needs, recognizing that as humans, our survival is dependent on one another.**

Mutual Aid is a practice and politics that emphasizes solidarity rather than charity. It means we recognize that our well-being, health and dignity are all bound up in each other. It means that we understand our survival depends on cooperation, not competition. In this particular moment, we see that our health is also dependent on other people’s health, and we can literally save each other’s lives. Rather than disengage and feel powerless, mutual aid allows us to plug in where we can make the most impact — locally.

Mutual aid IS...

- Getting people together in your community to provide material support to each other
- Building relationships with your neighbors based on trust and common interest
- Making decisions by consensus rather than relying on authority and hierarchy
- Sharing things rather than hoarding things
- Treating no one as disposable
- Providing all kinds of support, ranging from food prep to childcare to translation to emotional support, and recognizing the value of all of them
- A political education opportunity, where we build the relationships and analysis to understand why we are in the conditions that we're in
- Preparation for the next disaster (natural or economic). Next time around we'll already have relationships with each other and know who is vulnerable and needs support
- A great jumping off point for other kinds of organizing and movement work

Mutual aid IS NOT...

- Quid pro quo transactions
- Only for disasters or crises
- Charity or a way to "save" people
- A reason for a social safety net not to exist

DC Mutual Aid Network

The DC Mutual Aid Network (DCMA) is a grassroots community-led effort looking to take care of each other and keep our city as safe as possible.

- DCMA is a decentralized, community-led effort, so there is no single group that runs the network.
- There are autonomous groups for Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Wards 7 & 8 are served together by one group.
- The DCMA Network is governed by the ward groups on topics of social media, website, fundraising, etc. The groups also share resources, best practices and offer referrals to other groups.

Ward 2 Efforts

Ward 2 Mutual Aid is part of the larger DCMA Network. Our concrete activities are:

- **Hotline** - Volunteers staff our warmline, where Ward 2 residents can call and request assistance.
- **Groceries** - We provide a grocery bag delivery to ~150 families that request it through our hotline or building captains. The bags include fresh produce, protein, dry goods, and requested household items.
- **Encampment Outreach** - We organize a supply drop to ~120 unhoused neighbors.
- **Building captains** - We organize with local residents to utilize their leadership and relational networks. Building captains check on neighbors, relay needs, and assist with food donations and distribution.
- **Back to school** - We organize with local parents to host a book and clothing swap.
- **Support for high risk/immuno-compromised individuals** - We have been partnering with local public housing buildings to drop off cleaning supplies, masks, and groceries.

New Hope Community Ministries

Zera Bolivia Foundation fosters indigenous-led education, enabling self-empowerment, financial independence, and social mobility.

**Zera Bolivia** is an Aymara-led foundation that hosts classes and events for kids as a response to colonial norms, championing indigenous self-determination—especially for women and girls—through transformative education grounded in emotional intelligence, critical thinking, self-awareness, and practical tools for financial independence.

We began in 2015 with a socio-emotional learning pilot at a women’s prison in La Paz, and have since grown to reach thousands of children, youth, and families across Bolivia’s nine departments. Collaborating with municipal governments, the Ministry of Education, and local communities, we co-create culturally adapted programs that honor each community’s priorities and values. Thanks to our community and donor support, we have provided training, world-class educational materials, and technology infrastructure to prisons, children’s hospitals, rural areas, schools, and grassroots groups—always centering local leadership.

From the “Qantatai” literature podcast to “Bolivian Thinkers for Everyone By Zera,” our initiatives celebrate Bolivia’s intellectual heritage and open new pathways for dialogue and growth. Participants often report stronger emotional well-being, improved academic performance, and greater economic opportunities. As we look to the future, we are developing our first “STEM for Indigenous Young Women” program in El Alto and across 20 rural provinces of La Paz, in partnership with India’s STEMED NETWORK.

- We've worked with 4,000 young people across 19 African countries, with the majority coming form Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana, Rwanda and Kenya
- Shasha scholars have gone on to study at top universities worldwide, including the University of Cambridge, University of Rochester, and Yale
- Our goal to reach 50 million youths falls within the context of Africa's booming population projected to grow beyond 2 billion by 2050. We are betting on our youths to build the future of their communities
