What is Mutual Aid?

**Mutual aid is “cooperation for the sake of the common good.” It’s getting people to come together to meet each other’s needs, recognizing that as humans, our survival is dependent on one another.**

Mutual Aid is a practice and politics that emphasizes solidarity rather than charity. It means we recognize that our well-being, health and dignity are all bound up in each other. It means that we understand our survival depends on cooperation, not competition. In this particular moment, we see that our health is also dependent on other people’s health, and we can literally save each other’s lives. Rather than disengage and feel powerless, mutual aid allows us to plug in where we can make the most impact — locally.

Mutual aid IS...

- Getting people together in your community to provide material support to each other
- Building relationships with your neighbors based on trust and common interest
- Making decisions by consensus rather than relying on authority and hierarchy
- Sharing things rather than hoarding things
- Treating no one as disposable
- Providing all kinds of support, ranging from food prep to childcare to translation to emotional support, and recognizing the value of all of them
- A political education opportunity, where we build the relationships and analysis to understand why we are in the conditions that we're in
- Preparation for the next disaster (natural or economic). Next time around we'll already have relationships with each other and know who is vulnerable and needs support
- A great jumping off point for other kinds of organizing and movement work

Mutual aid IS NOT...

- Quid pro quo transactions
- Only for disasters or crises
- Charity or a way to "save" people
- A reason for a social safety net not to exist

DC Mutual Aid Network

The DC Mutual Aid Network (DCMA) is a grassroots community-led effort looking to take care of each other and keep our city as safe as possible.

- DCMA is a decentralized, community-led effort, so there is no single group that runs the network.
- There are autonomous groups for Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Wards 7 & 8 are served together by one group.
- The DCMA Network is governed by the ward groups on topics of social media, website, fundraising, etc. The groups also share resources, best practices and offer referrals to other groups.

Ward 2 Efforts

Ward 2 Mutual Aid is part of the larger DCMA Network. Our concrete activities are:

- **Hotline** - Volunteers staff our warmline, where Ward 2 residents can call and request assistance.
- **Groceries** - We provide a grocery bag delivery to ~150 families that request it through our hotline or building captains. The bags include fresh produce, protein, dry goods, and requested household items.
- **Encampment Outreach** - We organize a supply drop to ~120 unhoused neighbors.
- **Building captains** - We organize with local residents to utilize their leadership and relational networks. Building captains check on neighbors, relay needs, and assist with food donations and distribution.
- **Back to school** - We organize with local parents to host a book and clothing swap.
- **Support for high risk/immuno-compromised individuals** - We have been partnering with local public housing buildings to drop off cleaning supplies, masks, and groceries.

The LOVB Foundation fosters personal & holistic growth and community involvement through youth volleyball at the grassroots level.

Support early childhood development for 3, 4 and 5-year-olds in Liberia.

Steve Griffith and Chris Dickey established the  Friends of the Garden School , a  donor-advised fund  at KBFUS, in 2018 to fund the construction and operation of the Garden School in Gbarnga, Bong County in Liberia through the Liberian non-profit Standard Early Childhood Development. The Garden School is a community-based school in Liberia based on developmentally appropriate practices in early childhood education. Located in Gbarnga, Bong County, the School focuses on young children (ages 3-5) through an innovative model unique in the West African nation. According to the African Early Childhood Network, there are no free early learning services in Liberia. The Garden School provides active discovery learning to meet that need for Liberia's youngest citizens. Early childhood education is critical to the foundational development of productive and healthy children. The Garden School provides two meals every day. Breakfast draws the child to school; lunch keeps the child at school. The meals give children the nutrition they need to focus and perform during these early, formative years of learning. The School fosters active parent participation as well. Every child has a parent who volunteers at the school to enhance education and build school community. Parent workshops help parents see what their children are learning, how they can help, and what they can do with other children at home. The school offers a support system and built-in "extended family" of role models for students, consistent with the African proverb, "It takes a village to raise a child." The design of the school grounds further promotes an important feature of the traditional African approach to conflict resolution in communities. In the center courtyard of the campus is a palaver hut. In Liberian society, the palaver hut was historically a meeting place for leaders to help peacefully and candidly settle disputes in the local community. The palaver hut is a particularly poignant symbol in a country that experienced a violent, 14-year civil war, in which tens of thousands of children were forced to fight as child soldiers with psychosocial effects in a harrowing conflict that divided their country. "The impact [of the war] on a generation of Liberian youth, compounded by the 2014 school closure due to the Ebola outbreak, [has] had a huge impact on the education system," according to UNICEF. Today, on the campus of The Garden School, there is conflict resolution training. The palaver hut is an optimistic, hopeful symbol, a way of signaling and teaching peaceful conflict resolution for Liberia's next generation.  When students are not in class, they will be able to develop their natural and social skills in student gardens and play areas. And when school is not in session, the school buildings and grounds can be used for the community. Today, the Garden School serves not only as a place for 3, 4, and 5-year old children to build critical, foundational learning skills to set them up well on a path for a positive education and life. The school is also designed for local teacher training. Through workshops, the school's teachers spread their evidence-based teaching model to other educators in the community. SUPPORT THE GARDEN SCHOOL How you can support: 
 $10 to $20 helps cover the cost of a parent attending a one-week educational workshop to teach parents and guardians how they can help support their child's learning and development 
 $25 to $50 helps cover the cost of one primary school teacher in Bong County, Liberia to learn the methods of early childhood education, and prepare elementary schools to receive young, capable graduates of The Garden School, perpetuating the cycle of educational growth and development in the community. 
 $80 to $100 covers the cost of two nutritious meals per day for a student for an entire school year. 
 Donations in any greater amount will be put towards the uses described above.

Green Family Foundation

Providing multi-pronged support to 3000 under-privileged children daily. 

For over 7 decades, DCCW has been aspiring to live up to its mission to “give children a childhood and a future” by helping under-privileged children in and around Delhi who face challenges they cannot overcome.  We achieve this through programs in the areas of health, nutrition, pre-school education, vocational training, supervised homework schemes, rehabilitation of special needs children and educational sponsorship.  One of our best-known programs is PALNA, our home for lost and abandoned children, where alongside we run a very successful adoption program. Today, these services reach out to 3000 children daily through our 15 centres and are provided to them virtually free of cost. 

DCCW runs  on donations from corporates, institutions and individuals. 



All our programs are targeted at children from low-income families.



-	PALNA: our home and adoption centre for abandoned, lost and homeless children (one centre; 70-80 children resident at any time) 

-	Palna WeeKids: prepares under-privileged pre-school children for admission into schools (13 centres; 900+  beneficiaries annually)

-	Educational Sponsorship: Provides financial assistance to school-going children ( ~900 beneficiaries annually)

-	Supervised Homework Scheme – helps school-going children with their schoolwork (14 centres; ~300 beneficiaries annually)

-	Vocational Training: Teaches income-generating skills (Computers, Tally, Beauty culture, Tailoring) to adolescent girls, mostly school-dropouts (13 centres ; ~1000 beneficiaries annually) 

-	Bal Chetna – provides day-care and rehabilitation therapies to special needs children to help them achieve their potential (Pre-pandemic 3 centres ~100 beneficiaries; only one centre re-started to date)



DCCW is being run by a professional and very dedicated team and an Executive Committee (governing board) of volunteer members. DCCW has received accreditation from Credibility Alliance, Give India, Benevity, CAF America, testifying integrity and transparency as a donation-supported NGO.

Kids’ Club supports underserved youth in our community by awarding grants for programs for kids from birth to age 18 and beyond. 

Kids’ Club of Tarrytown & Sleepy Hollow provides support for underserved youth.  As a community organization, we marshal resources, increase local awareness, advocate for programming, and strengthen services to improve the lives of children and families. We develop community-led, circular solutions to end plastic pollution in remote coastal areas, grounded in local heritage.

We are an East African circular economy movement that in 2018 built the world’s first 100% recycled plastic sailing dhow.  Built from 10 tonnes of beach plastic, it was covered in 30,000 pieces of discarded flipflops collected from Kenyas beaches, hence its name 'The Flipflopi'. 

We employ a “full-systems” approach to beating plastic pollution through 

(1) education and awareness campaigns, 

(2) waste-plastic innovation rooted in heritage, and 

(3) influencing legislative change to ban single-use plastics. 

Over the course of three expeditions, the Flipflopi sailing boat has proved to be an exceptional campaign tool to catalyse engagement and action all three of the above focus areas. Watch our latest video, "[Stubborn Optimism - A Plastic Revolution" 
](https://youtu.be/RjVd7RR\_vPs?si=5XrC37OrODfvgnZJ)The 2019 Lamu to Zanzibar expedition, conducted in partnership with UN Environment, brought international media attention - 890 million people saw our message, we hosted the presidents and government ministers on the boat, and played a central role in national plastic bag bans that came into effect in both Kenya and Tanzania shortly after our campaign.

In 2020 Flipflopi Co-founder was awarded Kenya’s highest civilian honour for his contribution to preserving Kenya's Swahili culture and his environmental campaigning.  

In 2022, Flipflopi was awarded the FCDO’s prestigious SMEP Grant to tackle marine ecosystem health challenges which led to the creation of an innovative community-centered programme that is ‘closing the loop’ on waste plastic in the Lamu Archipelago (on the coast of northern Kenya) by combining indigenous knowledge of boatbuilding with modern innovation.  In a 24 month perirod we have collected 288 tonnes of plastic from the enviroment within the Lamu region. 

In 2022 we set up a Heritage Boat Building centre that runs pioneering classes teaching Dhow building and traditional craftsmanship to mixed gender classes of young people from Lamu County.  Students on these 12 week courses have built everything from ornately carved traditional Lamu chairs to Swahili Dhows – all from recycled plastic lumber instead of wood.  

In 2023, The Flipflopi team met UK Monarch King Charles whilst on a visit to Kenya, presenting him with an elegant traditional Swahili throne made entirely from recycled beach plastic.  It made headlines around the world. 

To date Flipflopi activity has principally taken place within Kenya, and to a lesser extent, in neighbouring countries Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda.  In 2025 we are turning our attention to globally scaling the many valuable lessons we have learned about how to create a circular economy for plastic waste.

In 2025 we begin our most ambitious campaign yet – first we will construct a 120 tonne, 24 metre long traditional Lamu Dhow (again, built entirely from recycled plastic) and then we embark on a global expedition that will convene the action we need globally to see a WORLD WITHOUT SINGLE USE PLASTIC.

What began as a single-city initiative has grown into a national network of ministry experiences that mobilize thousands of youth and adults each year to serve alongside local leaders and organizations meeting real community needs.

For more than three decades, CSM has worked to bridge the gap between short-term mission participants and the long-term ministries transforming urban neighborhoods from within. Through intentional orientation, contextual learning, hands-on service, and post-trip reflection, participants gain new perspectives on poverty, justice, and discipleship.
Each city program is locally led, ensuring that service opportunities are dignifying, sustainable, and aligned with the priorities of the community.

The Center For Student Missions

Did you know that 1.3 million children in Kenya between 10-19 years old struggle with mental health? ChezaCheza has developed a robust dance therapy curriculum built to improve the mental health and well-being of children.

ChezaCheza is a Kenyan not-for-profit founded in 2018, and we are on a mission to create access to safe spaces for children in marginalised communities where dance supports their mental health and well-being.

Through our therapeutic dance sessions, children experience the joy of dancing while flourishing into young adults with strong minds who show up in life with self-esteem and high self-awareness and approach life’s challenges with responsible actions.

Our Why
Children in marginalised communities live in a chronic environment of stress, with high levels of violence, abuse and adversity. 

This is an environment that induces toxic stress, making it difficult for children to regulate their emotions, resulting in impulsive actions and decisions, physical acting out, drug abuse, anxiety, and low self-esteem. ChezaCheza wants to use dance as therapy to combat this.

Community Dance Coaches
We find, train and equip dancers from marginalised communities to become Community-Based Dance Coaches who create safe spaces in their communities and schools.

Through an intensive training program, they gain skills to guide a ChezaCheza session, where they teach children how dance can be a tool for expressing their feelings, releasing stress, and building confidence.

Weekly Dance Sessions
Children receive a child-friendly, fun and culturally appropriate mental health service through weekly therapeutic dance sessions.

Each session incorporates Dance Movement Therapy, Social-Emotional Learning and Mindfulness Meditation.

Urban Peace Movement is an Oakland, CA based racial justice organization focussed on youth organizing and leadership development. 

Urban Peace Movement (UPM) was founded in 2009 to build youth leadership in Oakland/Alameda County to transform the social conditions that drive violence and mass incarceration in low-income communities of color. UPM envisions a world where youth of color are resilient and self-determined. Since its inception, UPM has served Alameda County communities of color through organizing, community building, healing events, and outreach. The organization’s work is designed with a deep understanding of these communities; in which their leadership/staff live and serve. UPM improves community well-being through:

1. **Youth Leadership Development:** UPM’s model of Healing-Centered Youth Organizing supports youth to increase their wellness and heal from trauma while empowering them to organize for positive community change.  UPM runs two youth leadership programs, the Determination Black Men’s Group and Leaders in Training program, across Alameda County for low-income/systems-impacted youth of color ages 14-26. 

2. **Community Healing:** UPM’s community healing work increases access to culturally-relevant mental health and healing resources and builds community belonging in Oakland/East Bay communities of color. UPM does this through healing and wellness festivals, healing circles, grief support circles, community vigils, and intensive case conferencing/service referrals for directly-impacted individuals including to mental health, housing, job placement, education, and childcare services. 

3. **Reimagining Safety and Justice:** UPM builds social change campaigns advocating for policies that create community-based alternatives to incarceration and real safety for youth of color and their families. UPM seeks an end to youth incarceration and reallocation of resources towards building blocks of well-being: healthcare, education, mental health treatment, etc.

Urban Peace Movement-Oakland

ICF works to meet the desperate need of impoverished children, pulling them away from the starvation, disease and victimization.

A different kind of children’s charity - Practical, direct grassroots action is the main focus of ICF. We channel the Christian concern of Americans into street level impact in African villages, where logistics often frustrate traditional relief efforts. The secret ingredient is a trustworthy network of local, indigenous partners, who personally shepherd your gifts of food, clothing, medicine, equipment and funds to the place's children need them most. ESRI provides comprehensive, free preschool for thousands of children in Ethiopia and an  income generation program for Mothers.


*ESRI is a high quality, comprehensive, preschool program for disadvantaged Ethiopian children which gives them the tools to succeed at school.*  The *ESRI Mothers Empowerment Program provides vocational training for selected mothers and helps them establish businesses. The cost to support each mother is $350.*                                                                                                                   In addition to a full classroom cognitive learning program, ESRI's comprehensive program includes continuing teacher education, evaluation of children's progress, parenting education, social services, and access to physical and behavioral health services for the children and families..
Since inception in 2007 ESRI has opened 113 pre-schools in 8 Regions throughout Ethiopia including rural areas   Over 70,000 students have benefited from an ESRI preschool education. ESRI partners with the Regional Boards of Education to implement the program. The ESRI program includes a 3-year curriculum, intensive teacher training and rigorous quality control. Behavioral management and health screening with referrals as needed and a parenting education program are also part of the ESRI comprehensive program. ESRI has trained over 2,500 preschool teachers and primary caregivers of children.
Ethiopian children enter first grade at age 7, unprepared to learn. Many fall behind quickly, lose interest, and by the end of the first grade 25% have dropped out of school. Over 50% drop out by the end of fourth grade. The data indicates that the children who drop out are the children who fall behind.
The Mother’s Empowerment Program is an integral and vital part of ESRI’s Comprehensive program. Selected Mothers in each of the 8 Regions attend training in their chosen fields. When the mothers complete their training, they receive materials so they can set up businesses. Past business includes commercial poultry, tailoring, injera baking and restaurants.
ESRI  arranges mentoring for the mothers as they establish their chosen business.
Mothers who have participated in this ESRI program report the impact on their lives includes decreased stress and increased self-esteem for themselves and better nutrition, improved housing, and a path out of poverty and a sense of hope for the future for the entire family.
ESRI’s expansion into the Regions of Ethiopia requires more preschool teachers. in the regions. To address this issue and to ensure the quality of preschool teachers for the future, ESRI has partnered with two universities in Ethiopia to develop new 3-year college training program for pre-school teachers.   This program is currently offered in 2 Universities in 2 Regions of Ethiopia.  As this program expands to additional universities, it will improve the quality of preschool education throughout the Country.
ESRI has made a positive impact over the last 17 years by introducing the concept of free access pre-school education to all of Ethiopia.

There are around 30,000 women in Ethiopia living with devastating childbirth injuries called obstetric fistula, because they don't know help is available. An estimated 1,000 women suffer a new fistula injury every year. Catherine’s trailblazing **Hamlin Model of Care** - today replicated around the world - finds, treats and holistically heals these women, restoring their lives.

Women living with childbirth injuries suffer great trauma. Following obstructed labour, they are left incontinent and usually lose their baby. They are shunned from their community and live hidden not knowing help available.

In a single year, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia treats more than 6,000 patients and perform more than 2,000 surgeries.

We also provide counseling and a range of vocational training to support nearly 1,000 women in their recovery. A woman's healing journey starts the moment she arrives at a Hamlin fistula hospital. She is given a Comfort Package containing a Hamlin blanket that has been lovingly made by a volunteer, hygiene items, a new nightgown and slippers, and a homecoming dress.

These are utter luxuries for the many women who arrive at a Hamlin hospital without shoes, wearing the only stained clothes they own. When they wrap themselves in their Hamlin blanket, they feel the warm embrace of people like you.

Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia's work is centered in Ethiopia, a country with one of the highest fertility and maternal mortality rates in the world. Our vision is simple: To eradicate obstetric fistula. Forever.

For more than six decades, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia has implemented our world-recognized approach to the holistic treatment of women and girls with obstetric fistulas — severe injuries resulting from prolonged, unrelieved and obstructed labor, typically in the absence of skilled birth attendants.

In 93% of cases, the mother suffers not only dramatic tissue damage, but she also loses her new baby. Nerve damage and weakened pelvic muscles make many daily tasks unmanageable. And, women are also often ostracized from their communities – cut off from avenues to leading a full, healthy and happy life.

The Hamlin Model of Care – The World's Leading Approach to Treating Obstetric Fistula

Dr Catherine Hamlin pioneered an approach to treating obstetric fistula, including developing a new surgical technique, that dramatically changes the lives of women and girls — in some cases in no more than an hour.

The Hamlin Model of Care is unique because it is not just about repairing injury, but restoring dignity. Hamlin's Rehabilitation and Reintegration Program at Desta Mender offers counseling, literacy and numeracy classes. Additional programs for vocational and life skills training help women find sustainable employment or establish their own small businesses. Today, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia is staffed by more than 550 Ethiopian medical professionals and five regional hospitals have been established to respond to the significant demand for fistula surgery.

To accelerate change for women in Ethiopia, our Project Zero teams will go from door-to-door, in every Woreda (district) to identify women living with historic fistula cases and organize care and treatment. At the same time, we will strengthen maternal healthcare services, to reduce the incidence of birth injuries, and increase awareness, so women have the tools and knowledge they need to give birth safely. Lasting change for women and girls requires building a workforce of skilled birth attendants. Through our Hamlin College of Midwives, we recruit women from rural communities in Ethiopia to learn the Hamlin Model of Care during a four-year Bachelor of Science in Midwifery program.  The curriculum is fully certified and includes the precondition that students conduct at least 40 deliveries before they graduate. Upon graduation, Hamlin midwives return to their villages – today staffing over 90 rural midwifery clinics in remote areas.
