Akna, a 12-year-old girl from Guatemala, and Awa, a 9-year-old girl from Senegal, live thousands of miles apart. Yet their stories are connected.
Both survived sexual violence. Both were forced to continue high-risk pregnancies. And both found the courage to raise their voices, not only for themselves, but for every girl who deserves a different future.
Two girls. Two countries. Two legal systems.
Their stories remind us that justice is about more than a legal victory. It is about restoring dignity, opening new possibilities, and creating pathways so that others do not endure the same harm.
Across Africa and Latin America, too many people continue to face criminalization, violence, discrimination, and barriers to care because of their reproductive decisions. Justice must reach beyond the courtroom. It must become something people can experience in their everyday lives—through safety, care, belonging, and the freedom to make decisions about their own bodies and futures.
In our first year, Libera helped expand access to reproductive health services for more than 10,000 people, supported the legal defense of more than 30 women facing criminalization through our pioneering legal defense and strategic litigation model, and contributed to securing a historic legal victory that delivered individual reparations for a survivor of sexual violence and forced motherhood.
Every victory creates new possibilities. Every person who experiences dignity helps create the conditions for others to experience it too.
