In sub-Saharan Africa, 89% of children cannot read simple stories, and in Uganda, 68% of primary school learners lacked the combined literacy and numeracy grade-level competence in 2021. There is a need to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities.

At WatuDev Intitives, we improve literacy and numeracy through:

1. **In-service Teacher Capacity Building:** Equipping educators and community champions with effective teaching methods.
2. **Remedial Support for Learners:** Providing targeted, personalized interventions to address individual learning challenges.
3. **Digital Learning Lab & Educational Resources:** Ensuring equitable access to diverse and quality learning materials, tools, and platforms.

Our Impact

Meet Kizza, a learner who started school at age 10 with no prior education. Traditional instruction wasn't enough to help him catch up. However, through WatuDev’s tailored remedial support and tablet-based learning tools, Kizza made remarkable progress. These digital resources made literacy and numeracy more engaging and accessible.

- Over **500 primary learners** have received literacy and numeracy support tailored to their individual needs.
- **81% of learners** advanced in numeracy competence.
- **75% of learners** successfully transitioned to the next literacy level.

As we continuously assess, iterate and work towards scale we aim to improve the core foundational skills of 50, 000 children and build capacity of 1000 teachers by 2032.

WatuDev Initiatives, a **women-led, registered Ugandan not-for-profit organization founded in 2020**. WatuDev comes from the Swahili word Watu which means people and the word Dev being short for Development, highlighting the organization's commitment to people-centered development. We believe that that every individual should have access to equal opportunities and be treated with dignity, regardless of their race, gender, socioeconomic status. We envision an Africa where every child gets the right start in education that leads to  pathways to opportunity and dignity.

By closing learning gaps, we build confidence and academic competence, preparing learners for future educational success and employment opportunities. These foundational skills will enable smooth educational transitions and contribute to a more educated and skilled community, ultimately breaking cycles of poverty.

Summary

This project provides primary school learners with access to a Mobile Digital Learning Lab equipped with tablets preloaded with comprehensive literacy and numeracy apps and resources. A modified tricycle motorcycle transports the lab, visiting each participating school weekly. Learners benefit from foundational skills instruction through digital and print materials, helping them catch up with their peers. This initiative aims to enhance educational outcomes and bridge the learning gap.

This project will benefit 500 learners by improving literacy, numeracy, and digital skills through tailored, interactive instruction.
