Umoja Sport's mission is to use sport as a tool for education, skills development, and economic empowerment within communities.

Umoja Sport is a nonprofit organization based in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, dedicated to unlocking youth potential through the transformative power of sport, education, and vocational training. In a context where traditional education systems often fall short in preparing youth for leadership, innovation, and entrepreneurship, Umoja Sport offers a bold alternative—one that centers young people as agents of change.

Through inclusive, youth-driven programming, Umoja Sport addresses complex challenges such as poverty, unemployment, criminality, health inequities, and climate vulnerability. By integrating sport with strategic learning and community engagement, the organization equips young leaders with the tools to reimagine their futures and drive sustainable development from the ground up.

Umoja Sport’s key programs are specifically designed to create lasting impact and foster community growth in the DRC through a multi-faceted approach:

1. Sport

At the heart of our mission is the use of sports as both a unifying force and a vital educational tool. We leverage carefully designed curricula that not only teach athletic skills but also address critical social issues, including health, gender equality, climate actions, and community engagement. By collaborating with over 61 schools throughout the region, we’re not just promoting sports; we’re driving systemic change that resonates deeply within the communities we serve. Our initiatives encourage teamwork and resilience, fostering an environment where participants can learn valuable life skills while gaining awareness of societal challenges.

2. Education

The educational initiatives at Umoja Sport aim to empower the youth of the DRC through literacy programs in both French and English. Our efforts extend beyond traditional learning, with a specific focus on marginalized groups. Cohorts of women and girls participate in specialized classes on menstrual health management and family health education, crucial topics that influence their quality of life. To the best of our knowledge, Umoja Sport is the pioneering organization that has equipped over 1,000 girls and women with reusable menstrual cups, addressing one of the most pressing health challenges faced by women and girls today. 

Importantly, we provide scholarships to a limited number of deserving students, enabling them to further their studies in formal education settings. This commitment to education equips participants with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

3. Vocational Training

Recognizing the need for essential job skills, our vocational training program functions as a second-chance school for those seeking to improve their livelihoods. We offer classes in practical fields such as sewing, beading, renewable energy, and plastic waste recycling, all of which are critical in today’s economy. In addition, financial literacy training empowers participants to manage their resources effectively and make informed financial decisions. This comprehensive approach not only enhances individual capabilities but also strengthens the community’s economic foundation.

Meaning behind the name

Founded in 2022 by Elvis Nshimba, an internationally accredited coach in sports for development, Umoja Sport is rooted in personal transformation and resilience. As a Mandela Washington Fellowship alumnus, Ashoka Fellow, and Mountaintop Fellow, Elvis draws on his own challenging upbringing to inspire others. His passion for creating change is fueled by his painful childhood memories, motivating him to establish a platform to cultivate and support future changemakers.

The name "Umoja," meaning "Unity" in Swahili, encapsulates our vision of bringing communities together through sports. We strive to create an inclusive space where individuals can openly discuss and confront social issues that impede community development. Our work reaches over 50,000 people annually, making a significant difference in the lives of many and promoting a culture of empowerment and collaboration. Together, we can forge pathways toward a brighter, more equitable future for all.

One of our flagship innovative initiatives, launched in 2025 by Umoja Sport, is the ECO-SPORT project—a pioneering socio-sport center focused on renewable energy. This groundbreaking initiative serves as a vibrant hub where sports for climate action, photovoltaic energy solutions, and advanced plastic waste recycling techniques come together in a synergistic approach.

ECO-SPORT is more than just a project; it embodies our commitment to environmental stewardship and community empowerment. By providing a space that encourages active participation in sports while advocating for sustainable practices, we are not only enhancing our participants’ lives but also fostering a culture of responsibility toward our planet.

ECO-SPORT is a testament to our vision of integrating sport with social responsibility, ensuring that every kick, every pass, and every recycling effort contributes to a greener, more sustainable future for everyone involved. Additionally, we leverage the power of sport to foster a positive mindset shift toward our collective environmental responsibilities. Through this initiative, we equip individuals with practical skills in renewable energy and waste management, creating pathways for economic improvement and cultivating a community that is not only active but also deeply committed to environmental stewardship.
