No European media commissions photography like Brussels' Battleground.

We publish a continuous stream of original photographs about the other Europe, focusing on minorities, migrants, and refugees, as well as social inequality. The European Union has never been more embroiled in ethnic and political conflict, and we document this crisis.

Whether it be people in the street or antiwar protests, The Battleground captures everything of significance, bringing ideology down to earth and putting a human face on the struggle for democracy and freedom in today's Europe. We care a lot, and it shows.

It's unusual to consistently publish strong imagery like this, as most current events media use photos as supporting rather than lead content. But it makes a big difference, and our statistics bear this out: photos outrank articles in views and drive The Battleground's traffic.

In an era in which news media have laid off their staff photographers and replaced their work with agency subscriptions, The Battleground stands out for publishing original imagery unavailable anywhere else. 1300 photos in nearly six years, to be precise.

To continue this work and further innovate as a photojournalism publisher, The Battleground needs to purchase new cameras and lenses suitable for documentary and events photography, as well as a new iMac to process and archive our images.
