**The situation**

In August, STAND are hitting the road to collect hundreds of prosthetic legs.

We are going to all this trouble as millions of amputees in Africa have no access to prosthetic legs. Whilst in high-income countries, we throw them away after use.

We are asking supporters to fund our global leg collection and other work to get people STAND-ing again! 

**The solution**

This August we are looking to fund our UK and global collection of legs, and of course the essential rehabilitation work to help people with their legs. All this will help hundreds of amputees walk again.

Our target is $26,000 (and 500+ legs).

STAND's work has already resulted in thousands of people standing again. With your help we hope to collect more legs, help African clinics fit more legs, and support more amputees than ever before.

**About STAND**
At STAND, we believe no one should be left behind because of limb loss. Our vision is a world where everyone, regardless of income or geography, has access to the prosthetic care they need to live independently and thrive.

**What We Do**
STAND gives mobility a second life. We collect high-quality prosthetic limbs that would otherwise be discarded in the UK, Europe, Australia, and North America. These devices are disassembled, cleaned, and refurbished in our workshop in Bristol, UK, and then redistributed to trusted rehabilitation centers across sub-Saharan Africa.

By transforming clinical waste into life-changing mobility, we bridge two critical gaps: the surplus of unused prosthetic technology in high-income countries, and the lack of access to assistive devices in low-resource communities.

**Why It Matters**
In much of sub-Saharan Africa, prosthetic limbs are unaffordable and inaccessible. Most prosthetic components must be imported and are subject to high shipping fees and import duties. At the same time, national health insurance rarely covers these devices. For many people, this results in a life of isolation and dependence after limb loss. STAND works to change that by lowering the cost of care and supporting local clinics with the tools, training, and technology they need.

**Our Impact**
In the past 10 years, STAND has delivered more than 20,000 prosthetic limbs to partners in 8 African countries. We help thousands of people regain mobility, independence, and dignity. Every year, we divert over a ton of advanced mobility equipment from landfill and repurpose it into valuable, safe, and high-quality devices.

Every limb we ship is quality-checked by certified professionals, and every delivery is matched to a local clinic's needs. In most cases, the refurbished limb is provided at little or no cost to the recipient.

**Where We Work**
STAND supports clinics and community-based rehabilitation in:

- The Gambia (where we have a registered office and in-country team)
- Ghana
- Liberia
- Benin
- Senegal
- Uganda
- Tanzania
- Kenya

We support mobile clinics that bring services to remote and underserved communities, ensuring care reaches those who would otherwise go without.

**Holistic Support for Amputees**
Mobility is not just a physical issue. It affects mental health and self-worth too. That’s why STAND funds peer-counseling programs in Gambia and Ghana. These services are led by trained amputees who provide emotional support to others going through the trauma of limb loss. They work in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and communities, and are often the first point of contact for new amputees.

We also invest in training the next generation of prosthetic technicians, especially women and individuals with lived experience of limb difference. By creating inclusive and gender-sensitive care environments, we ensure better outcomes for all.

**A Sustainable Solution**
STAND operates one of the only recycling streams for prosthetic limbs in the world. Our work reduces landfill waste and lowers the carbon footprint of healthcare. In 2023, our program saved the equivalent of 5.7 metric tons of CO₂ emissions, that's like planting over 300 oak trees.

This unique combination of environmental and humanitarian impact makes our work a powerful example of circular economy thinking applied to global health.

STAND runs a lean operation, working with over 40 hospital partners and a network of skilled volunteers to maximize the impact of every dollar. In 2024, 67% of our total spending went directly to charitable activities, with just 12% allocated to fundraising.
