Keep Our Freedom School Garden Growing

The Springfield Community Center began as a Freedom School — a schoolhouse where Black children in [City, GA] learned to read, write, and imagine bigger lives at a time when other doors were closed to them. Generations later, that same ground still brings our community together.

Today it holds a community garden that grows fresh food, teaches young people where their meals come from, and gives neighbors a place to work side by side. It's a living classroom, planted on historic soil.

But the garden is struggling. The grant that kept it going has ended. Our tiller and our van have both broken down, and with no water line on the property, we haul every drop by hand. We're determined not to let it wither.
