Nantucket Lightship/LV-112
East Boston, MANantucket/LV-112, a National Historic Landmark, was built and commissioned in 1936, and decommissioned in 1975. Her homeport is and was always Boston Harbor. Na…ntucket/LV-112 is also the largest U.S. lightship ever built. For 39 years, LV-112 guided transoceanic shipping to and from U.S. east coast ports, through some of the most treacherous shipping lanes in the world. She was the first symbol of America encountered by thousands of immigrants. Many famous vessels such as the SS United States, the Queen Mary, Normandie and many other international merchant and naval vessels depended on LV-112 as a navigational aid, her powerful light, fog horn, radio beacon and brilliant red hull with large white letters “NANTUCKET.” Now it’s our turn to save and preserve this unique National Historic Landmark. You can help preserve LV-112 by joining the United States Lightship Museum and becoming a member. The United States Lightship Museum is always looking for new members, committed volunteers and financial donors.
