Public advocacy on AI 

- We helped organize the [Not For Private Gain](https://notforprivategain.org/) advocacy coalition, advocating to the Attorneys General of California and Delaware to protect OpenAI’s charitable mission (ensuring artificial general intelligence is safe and benefits all of humanity) from being undermined by the company’s corporate restructuring. Our work helped convince OpenAI to back off its original restructuring proposal and commit to continued nonprofit control, and we continue to advocate for even better outcomes from a safety perspective. 
- We dug into the [corporate filings of xAI](https://lasst.org/2025/08/25/xai-and-public-benefit-corporations-in-ai/), [revealing](https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2025/08/25/elon-musk-xai-dropped-public-benefit-corp-status-while-fighting-openai.html) that despite what it has said to at least one court and the public, it is no longer a public benefit corporation. The revelation shows that AI companies organizing as PBCs (including OpenAI) is not a robust way to ensure safe AI systems.

Developing and filing amicus briefs

- We pulled together a coalition of respected virologists, epidemiologists and public health professionals to file [amicus](https://lasst.org/2024/12/23/lassts-pathogen-research-amicus-brief-project/) [briefs](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pb7vB6yblM7Yj-219tb-g2lkDvWLgggm/view?usp=drive_link) in COVID-origins litigation advocating for outcomes that will deter irresponsibly dangerous research involving pathogens with enhanced pandemic potential.  
- We helped write [the amicus brief Encode filed in the Musk v. Altman litigation](https://encodeai.org/encode-backs-legal-challenge-to-openais-for-profit-switch/), reframing OpenAI’s restructuring as a public interest AI safety issue and catalyzing anti-restructuring public advocacy work. 

Litigation surveillance and research 

- We track what courts are doing on AI and biosafety so we can better advocate in the context of evolving case law (like *Mobley v. Workday*’s holding on deployer liability for the actions of AI agents or *Garcia v. Character Technologies* addressing whether the First Amendment protects chatbot outputs). This helps us find cases where amicus briefs can help influence key judicial decisions or new precedents can be incorporated into impact litigation interventions.
- We’re always doing fact research designed to support legal interventions, including filing public records requests under FOIA and state analogs.

**About Río Limpio**: Río Limpio is a community-based project using science to confront two urgent and connected challenges in the Peruvian Amazon: dengue transmission and plastic pollution. We partner with rural river communities to develop sustainable, local solutions that protect both human health and the environment. Rio Limpio is a project of the Center for Transformative Action.

**The Problem**: Remote communities along the rivers of the Peruvian Amazon are facing intersecting health and environmental threats. The connection between two urgent problems—dengue transmission and solid waste—is central to our work. The dengue mosquito lays its eggs in water-filled containers, such as discarded plastic trash. Plastic pollution is increasing in these remote areas, brought in by cargo ships that also transport hitchhiking dengue mosquitoes. This has enabled the mosquitoes to invade communities deep within the rainforest. It’s a new and evolving problem—dengue was once limited to cities in South America—and it’s especially concerning because many of these communities are far from the medical care needed to treat severe dengue cases. The communities also have limited access to solid waste management, and often pile up their trash to burn on a dry day - in the meantime, these piles of trash serve as breeding grounds for the dengue mosquito.

**Our Approach**: We believe simple, affordable solutions can make a big difference. Río Limpio uses scientific methods to track the scale of these issues and evaluate what works—while ensuring that communities lead the way. We recruit and train local health workers who implement mosquito control and waste management interventions, lead public education efforts, and help monitor impact. Our work is guided by partnerships with scientists and local leaders to ensure that every action is grounded in data, sustainability, and community priorities.

Reach A Hand Uganda (RAHU) is a youth-centered nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young people with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to make informed life choices. Founded in 2011, RAHU focuses primarily on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), ensuring that young people across Uganda have access to accurate information and quality services.

Our SRHR work includes HIV/AIDs awareness and prevention, information and access to modern contraception, livelihoods, safer sex options, and comprehensive life skills development. At the heart of our mission is the drive to challenge negative social norms that limit young people’s access to quality SRHR resources and services.

We operate in more than 53 districts across Uganda, engaging youth ages 10–19 and 20–30, who are faced with SRHR challenges. We partner with young people living with HIV, refugees, youth whom are in- and out-of-school, and those living with disabilities. We also work closely with men—as users and advocates of family planning, champions, and satisfied users a—recognizing their critical influence on reproductive health decisions within families and communities.

A cornerstone of our impact is our national network of **836+ trained peer educators**, who lead community mobilization, SRHR information sharing, and have a significant impact on service uptake. Their efforts are supported by interpersonal communication agents who promote male involvement in family planning, including informed uptake of vasectomy.

Our digital communications hub, **SautiPlus**, amplifies RAHU’s work by creating and disseminating youth-friendly SRHR content to millions of young people and the adults who influence them—parents, teachers, cultural leaders, policymakers, and more.

Sentinel transforms pandemic prevention and response through cutting-edge technology, global collaboration, and local empowerment.

Infectious disease outbreaks have caused more illness, death, and economic loss than any other crisis in history. Pathogens kill millions of people each year and hit the most vulnerable communities the hardest. They go further—exposing and exploiting the deepest cracks in our societies and the risks are rising. 

 The forces driving pandemics are accelerating. Climate change is increasing human exposure to pathogens through animals and insects. Habitat encroachment and industrial agriculture are raising the risk of spillover. Global trade and travel speed disease spread, while conflict and instability weaken health systems. New biotechnologies pose engineered threats that current systems cannot detect. Over the past decade, the number of epidemics has grown by 20% worldwide. Between February and June 2025 alone, more than 70 outbreaks were reported across Africa. Yet global readiness is faltering. In the past year, U.S. investments in frontline health systems and disease surveillance have been sharply reduced. Funding cuts have disrupted networks and delayed the deployment of critical tools, especially in regions most vulnerable to outbreaks. Health programs across West and Central Africa now face rising threats with fewer resources and limited external support, leaving the world more exposed- with some experts estimating the probability of a pandemic in the next decade to exceed one in four.
 
Amid these mounting challenges, we stand at a historic moment of possibility. Sentinel, a pandemic early warning prevention and response program, is built to meet this moment: a locally led, technology-enabled model for proactive public health, integrating diagnostics, data, and training to stop outbreaks before they spread. 

Sentinel is an outbreak surveillance framework, designed to detect pathogenic threats in real-time and prepare the global community to stop diseases before they spread. It brings advanced science to the frontlines through a next-generation pandemic prevention system built around three core pillars. DETECT delivers rapid diagnostics and genomic surveillance. CONNECT integrates laboratory, clinical, and genomic data into real-time insights. EMPOWER invests in training, infrastructure, and institutional capacity so countries can lead their own outbreak responses.

DETECT: Timely diagnostics and sequencing are essential for early outbreak detection and effective response. Yet these capabilities remain limited in many LMICs, even for high-priority pathogens like Lassa, Ebola, and Marburg. Too often, health systems act only after outbreaks are widespread, costing precious time and lives. Sentinel’s DETECT pillar delivers speed, affordability, and accessibility through a tiered approach to diagnostic design and implementation.

CONNECT: Fragmented systems delay response and allow outbreaks to spread unchecked. When data are siloed, public health leaders lose time and visibility, undermining containment efforts. In contrast, integrated systems support faster, more effective action. Sentinel’s CONNECT pillar builds the digital backbone for outbreak response. Through interoperable dashboards and analytic platforms, it streamlines data flow, strengthens each stage of detection, analysis, and control, and enables real-time decision-making.

EMPOWER: Building local leadership and scientific capacity is central to Sentinel’s mission. Although over 60% of emerging infectious diseases originate in Africa and Asia, fewer than 10% of African countries had genomic surveillance at the start of COVID-19. Africa faces a shortfall of more than one million health workers, including critical gaps in genomics and data science. Sentinel’s EMPOWER pillar builds sustainable, locally led outbreak response by investing in people and communities. It enables local experts to detect and respond early with solutions grounded in context, shortening the path from innovation to public health practice and building resilient systems from within.

The foundation for Sentinel was laid over two decades through a 20-year partnership between Prof. Christian Happi, a Nigerian infectious disease expert, and Prof. Pardis Sabeti, a U.S.-based computational geneticist. Over the years this collaboration has established operational programs in Nigeria and Sierra Leone that connect health workers in rural clinics and hospitals with national and international public health leadership. **To date more than 3,000 public health workers from 53 of 54 countries in Africa** have been trained through Sentinel’s approach.

Sentinel-supported teams have enabled early detection and rapid response to Marburg, mpox, Lassa, dengue, and COVID-19, providing critical data to inform government action. 

COVID-19: Sentinel rapidly expanded genomic and diagnostic capacity across Africa, establishing pipelines with national partners. In March 2020, IGH sequenced Africa’s first SARS-CoV-2 genome within 72 hours of sample receipt. Sentinel supported testing for over 30 million people, deployed SHINE and CARMEN technologies, and led genomic surveillance in 26 countries. This work helped identify one of the first globally recognized variants of concern. Sentinel also trained scientists from 53 African countries, strengthening long-term preparedness. The Sentinel team also led one of the largest diagnostic and sequencing centers in the U.S. and supported global data sharing and informatics efforts.

Mpox: In 2023, Sentinel traced an mpox outbreak in Nigeria to oil workers in Rivers State, guiding the NCDC’s targeted vaccination strategy. Sentinel also hosted a three-week genomics bootcamp that trained regional professionals in real-time sequencing and analysis. Genomic data revealed sustained human transmission of the West African subtype, with signs of adaptation and rising pandemic potential. When an outbreak emerged in Sierra Leone in 2024, local public health teams, supported by Sentinel, initiated sequencing and shared real-time data. Analysis identified a new highly transmissible G.1 variant spreading beyond previously affected groups. Sentinel tools and team members remain central to guiding the national response.

 Marburg: In 2024, Sentinel supported the Rwandan government during a Marburg outbreak in Kigali. IGH provided outbreak reconstruction and real- time sequencing, while Prof. Happi co-chaired the national scientific response. The outbreak was contained at 66 cases, with the case fatality rate reduced to 22%, far below historical averages.

Building off of these successes, Sentinel is poised for its next phase: deepening national integration, expanding its reach, and advancing a globally transferable model for pandemic prevention. We will achieve full national implementation in Sierra Leone and move toward this in Nigeria, embedding surveillance into national systems and incorporating a One Health approach that addresses climate-linked and zoonotic threats. Expansion will continue to Senegal, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where strong partners and readiness are in place. In parallel, we are globalizing Sentinel’s tools, data platforms, and training programs to create a lasting framework for pandemic prevention.

Sentinel will help millions benefit from earlier detection, faster response, stronger systems, and a globally connected early warning network. This is the moment to transform pandemic prevention and safeguard global health security for generations to come.

There will be another pandemic virus in our lifetimes—it may already be here, but our work is about more than stopping disease outbreaks. By empowering people and equipping them with the tools, the system, and the knowledge needed, we create strong and resilient communities for generations to come. Taimaka has reimagined pediatric malnutrition treatment to make it **more cost-effective and scalable**. We’ve developed a malnutrition treatment model that is:

2. Leverages digitally-enabled community health workers (CHWs) to deliver care to the most vulnerable communities. 

So far, we’ve used our model to treat 6,000+ children out of existing government hospitals in northeastern Nigeria with world-class recovery rates of 95%+. METR (Model Evaluation and Threat Research) builds the science of accurately assessing risks, so that humanity is informed before developing transformative AI systems.

We believe that AI could change the world quickly and drastically, with potential for both enormous good and enormous harm. We also believe it’s hard to predict exactly when and how this might happen.

At some point, AIs will probably be able to do most of what humans can do, including developing new technologies; starting businesses and making money; finding new cybersecurity exploits and fixes; and more.

We think it’s very plausible that AI systems could end up pursuing goals that are at odds with a thriving civilization. This could be due to someone’s deliberate effort to cause chaos, or happen despite the intention to only develop AI systems that are safe.

Given how quickly things could play out, we don’t think it’s good enough to “wait and see” whether there are dangers.

We believe in vigilantly, continually assessing risks. If an AI brings significant risk of a global catastrophe, the decision to develop and/or release it can’t lie only with the company that creates it.

Spritely Institute builds, researches, and standardizes networked technology which put people and communities first.


Centralized social media is harmful to society. We are building a gatekeeper-free decentralized system. Our mission is “social media done right”, to put people in control of their own identity and build the technology that would enable a shift to collaborative and intentional security models prioritizing active consent. To accomplish this, we will build a new architecture for the internet: removing the necessity of client-server architecture, replacing it with a participatory peer-centric model.

Spritely’s technology is being released as free and open source software aiming for multiple programming language implementations and eventual open standardization. All of our work, ranging from decentralized identity, peer-to-peer user agents, decentralized social networks, encrypted and portable storage, and distributed object programming infrastructure is being built to enable a gatekeeper-free path where users and content are not tied to a specific server.

The IWM is a non-profit institution that promotes intellectual work and enables encounters of people around ideas. 

The Institute for Human Sciences (IWM Vienna) is an institute of advanced studies in the humanities and social sciences founded in 1982. We promote intellectual exchange across disciplines, between academia and society, and among regions that now embrace Eastern, Central and Western Europe, the Global South and North. We aim to reframe larger questions of academic debate and public interest that address today's complex challenges. We believe that sustained intellectual work and its broad dissemination is essential to a humane future of open, just, and sustainable societies. 

Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen (IWM)

CETI is a nonprofit org applying advanced machine learning and gentle robotics to listen to and translate whale communication. 

Founded in 2020 as a TED Audacious Project, the organization’s science team is made up of the world's leading artificial intelligence and natural language processing experts, marine biologists, cryptographers, linguists, roboticists and underwater acousticians. CETI’s research is taking place off of the island of Dominica in the Caribbean.

In the late 1960s, scientists, including Dr. Roger Payne, a principal advisor of CETI, discovered that whales sing to one another. His recordings, Songs of the Humpback Whale, sparked the “Save the Whales” movement, one of the most successful conservation initiatives in history. The campaign eventually led to the Marine Mammal Protection Act that marked the end of large-scale whaling and saved several whale populations from extinction. 

All this by just hearing the sounds of whales. Imagine what would happen if we could understand them?

WHY WHALES 
Sperm whales specifically share traits strikingly similar to humans. They live in matriarchal and multicultural societies and share dialects and strong multigenerational family bonds. Sperm whales have the largest brains of any species and have higher-level functions such as conscious thought and future planning, as well as speech and feelings of compassion, love, suffering and intuition. Their vocalizations, among the loudest animal sounds on the planet, have a Morse code-like structure that shares the hallmarks of a highly-evolved language. Our understanding of these animals and their dialects is still in its infancy. Only in the last fifteen years have we begun to learn how some of their vocalizations are used for communication.  
WHAT CETI IS DOING
CETI is:
-Developing non-invasive robotics to listen to a population of whales in the Caribbean and put their sounds into context.
-Deploying a “Core Whale Listening System,” an innovative hydrophone array, underwater robotic gliders, custom bioinspired whale tags and other technology to gently study the whales.
-Building on substantial data on the whales’ sounds, social lives, and behavior already obtained by the Dominica Sperm Whale Project. 
-Creating a bespoke, big-data pipeline to examine the recorded data and decode it using advanced machine learning, natural language processing and data science.
-Publishing a series of academic papers beginning with the CETI roadmap.
-Collaborating with the National Geographic Society, including their Exploration Technology Lab, and amplifying the project across National Geographic’s storytelling and education channels.
-Implementing community-based programs like the Dominica Marine Conservation Fellowship, a community-based 10-month multi- module training program for young Dominicans interested in marine science, that was developed in partnership with National Geographic.
-Launching various communications projects to tell CETI’s story including a public interface for the citizen science community, resources for educators and children and arts programs.

IMPACT
Now, for the first time in history, it’s possible to use artificial intelligence to identify and interpret deep structure within animal communication. Using these technologies, CETI is building on the legacy of the “Save the Whales” movement with the goal of having an impact by contributing the following:
Interspecies Communication - A new data set of unprecedented size to the rapidly expanding field of interspecies communication and a roadmap of how humans could translate the communication of any other species
Marine Biology - A substantive contribution to the field of whale research within marine biology that opens gateways for future research initiatives. 
Policy - New information about whales that can bolster policy efforts to protect marine mammals and ocean habitats. Policy advances in this area are crucial as six out of the 13 “great” whale species (the largest whales) are still endangered (World Wildlife Federation). To ensure impact in this area, CETI plans to build out policy campaigns and initiatives. 
Perspective - It is widely endorsed that connectivity with nature can improve mental health. By sharing its journey and findings with the public, CETI hopes to contribute to a feeling of increased wonder and connectedness to whales and the ocean that can inspire action. CETI will build out arts and childrens’ initiatives in support of this impact goal.
Conservation - CETI’s first phase of research is taking place in Dominica in the Caribbean, a region that is one of the world’s greatest centers of diversity. By carrying out its research in partnership with local stakeholders, CETI hopes to contribute to regionally-led research and conservation efforts.

HOW CETI IS SUPPORTING DOMINICA
-CETI’s capacity-building initiative, Dominica Marine Conservation Fellowship is a 10-month, nine module training program for young Dominicans interested in marine science) in partnership with National Geographic.  The program has three 2022/2023 fellows and partnerships with the Dominica National Youth Council, Dominica State College and Dominica’s Ministry of Education. The program’s curriculum (co-created with National Geographic) includes modules on marine science, scientific research/techniques, water and vessel skills and storytelling and leadership among other topics.
-All research and findings by CETI in Dominica are all open-source and will be available for Dominica. The organization’s sailing research vessel (CETI-1), a Rigid Inflatable Boat (CETI-2) and Dominican made boat (CETI-3) are in operation in Dominican waters; these boats along with other CETI equipment will be donated to the local entity at the completion of the project.
-A temporary field station has been established in Dominica and has the capacity to host 10-12 researchers, fellows and students. In the long-term, CETI plans to build a permanent field station in Dominica 
-In 2023, CETI will continue local engagement and presentations with primary and secondary schools, development of video content for use in classrooms, collaborations with local artists and collaborations with local stakeholders such as marine and dive operators, civil society organizations and schools.
