$50 Food Security Seed Grants in Kakuma Refugee Camp
In a remote and underserved area of Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, Scorpion Control Center (SCC) has become a vital lifeline. Originally founded to reduce scorpion stings and snakebites through education and community awareness, SCC has grown into a broader hub for empowerment—offering basic English classes, youth programs, and livelihood training.
But today, Kakuma is facing a severe food crisis.
A Crisis That Cannot Be Ignored
Since the shutdown of USAID support, food supplies have plummeted. Under new restrictions, the World Food Program is able to provide rations to only a small fraction of refugees.
The majority are left with nothing.
Families are skipping meals for days. Children are collapsing from hunger. Mothers—many of them widows or caretakers of orphaned relatives—are unable to provide even the most basic food for their families.
Some refugees have attempted suicide. Others have risked returning to the very dangers they fled.
This crisis is also undermining education and hope. Attendance in SCC’s English class dropped from over 20 regular learners to only a handful. Women are too hungry, exhausted, and overwhelmed to attend.
Why Women? Why $50?
Most of SCC’s learners are women responsible for entire households. They are skilled and motivated—but completely without resources. With even a small financial boost, they can start tiny income‑generating activities that immediately improve their family’s access to food.
A $50 Seed Grant is enough to provide:
- Start-up capital for small home businesses
- Immediate food relief
- Stability that allows women to return to education and rebuild their futures
One woman’s grant can indirectly support dozens of extended family and community members.
What This Project Will Provide
1. $50 Seed Grants for 30 Refugee Women
Women enrolled in SCC’s English program will receive a micro‑grant to launch or strengthen small food‑generating businesses, restoring dignity and reducing dependence on emergency aid.
2. Three‑Month Food Care Packages
Because seed grants take time to generate income, each participant will receive basic food items—such as maize or wheat flour and beans—once or twice monthly for three months.
3. Home & Community Farming Support
To further strengthen long‑term food security, SCC will help women grow vegetables at home or in designated communal plots. Funds will supply seeds, tools, watering equipment, and other basic farm inputs.
Your Support Saves Lives
Your contribution—no matter how modest—provides immediate relief and long‑term resilience for families who are running out of options.
A single $50 gift can prevent starvation, restore hope, and empower a refugee woman to feed her family with dignity.
This is urgent. This is life‑saving.
