Sri Lanka is currently grappling with one of its most severe weather-related disasters in recent years, triggered by the combined effects of the intensifying North East Monsoon and a persistent low-pressure system. This has led to devastating, large-scale flooding and catastrophic, fatal landslides across the island. The emergency has rapidly escalated, compelling the government to issue high-level warnings and suspend major infrastructure services.
The figure is now rapidly escalating with the developing situation, according to the Disaster Situation Report dated 28/11/2025 of NDRSC[1] reveals a critical humanitarian crisis impacting 50,021 families, affecting a total of 187,533 persons, with a slightly higher count of 99,858 affected females compared to 87,629 affected males. The human cost includes 329 deaths and 210 injuries. Among the affected population, a large number of children are impacted, with 10,363 children under 5, 12,420 affected males over 5, and 14,786 affected females over 5. Additionally, the report identifies 795 individuals who are classified as Special Needy People, indicating a substantial and complex need for relief and assistance across all demographics. Sarvodaya's network is actively engaged but requires targeted funding to address the most urgent humanitarian needs. This humanitarian action will provide focused, high-impact relief to vulnerable individuals in critically affected villages in the Districts.
The justification for this targeted sectoral approach is based on three critical, non-negotiable priority areas identified by local authorities and rapid assessments in the affected areas and shelters
1. Urgent Food Security and Nutritional Support
2. WASH, Hygiene, and Dignity Kits
- Camp Support
