My mitzvah project is to raise funds for and awareness about Kazerne Dossin, a Holocaust Memorial and museum located the town of Mechelen, Belgium. I have a personal connection to Kazerne Dossin because my maternal great grandparents were forced here after being captured by the Nazis in Brussels. It was here that they were stripped of their identities and thrown onto the train to Auschwitz-Birkenau.
In June 2022 I visited Kazerne Dossin with my family to discover more about my great grandparents and my heritage. This experience helped me to understand the importance of the term Never Forget. I hope others can visit this memorial and museum to learn about the Holocaust and its impact on Jews living in Belgium during World War II.
In the center of the picture above you can see my great-grandparents, Gertrude and Bernard Reif. Their photos are in color, which means they were survivors. They are featured on a four-story high wall in the museum, in which color photos represent those who survived the Holocaust, and black and white images indicate those who perished in the Holocaust. Sadly, most of the images on this wall are black and white.
