Support Health Access in Colombia
In Colombia, most towns rely solely on a general doctor in their hospitals, necessitating trips to main cities for specialized medical services, diagnostic exams, treatments, and surgeries. Moreover, numerous locations in Colombia are accessible only by air or water, with no roads leading to them, resulting in steep travel costs to reach urban centers. This financial burden often makes it impossible for people to access specialized medical care.
Their unique health model operates mainly in rural areas through three-day medical brigades, mobilizing at least 50 volunteer health professionals and two tons of medical equipment and medications using 10-15 aircraft. Each brigade serves an average of 800 patients and conducts around 1000 specialized medical consultations, including general medicine, optometry, dermatology, pediatrics, nutrition, ophthalmology, obstetrical ultrasound, odontology, and gynecology. Additionally, they perform a minimum of 120 surgeries, covering general surgery, ophthalmology, and gynecology. The majority of their beneficiaries live in conditions of extreme poverty and have been affected by internal armed conflict.
The organization is a private, non-profit, nonsectarian entity with 58 years of experience in providing surgical, humanitarian, and emergency medical care to communities experiencing poverty, extreme poverty, social or geographical exclusion, or those affected by armed conflict or disasters.
