**Disaster by heavy rainfall in Nepal**

**Udayapur District:** The Saptakoshi River flows on the eastern bank of Udayapur district. During this rainy season, in ‘Belka Municipality’, settlements, homes, lands, animals and farms are damaged by the Saptakoshi overflowed floods. There is a high level of outbreak. Ward no. 1, 2, 3, 8 and 9 are affected very badly by the floods. As a result, more than 10,000 residents of around thousand households are displaced. At present, most of them are forced to live in their own houses damaged by flood waters as well as many people taking shelter in other wards.   

Badly damaged ward number is 3 because this Ward is located at lower level of the area. As per the Ward Chairperson of ward number 3 Mr. Falgun Karki - one person is dead by flood. 25 houses of Ward number 3 are fully damaged. More than 500 domestic animals are missing. Agricultural products in the field are damaged as well as foods stored in houses also fully damaged. Public of the area are in need of relief support.

Thousands of publics are displaced and taking shelter in neighbouring wards and shelter constructed by HDC Nepal during last Disaster Management project supported by Give2Asia, HDC Nepal staff in Belaka Ambika Kalikote says.

**Panchthar District:** This district situated in hilly region in Mahabharat range of eastern part of Nepal. During this rainy season death toll rises to five, six missing and some are injured in this district. Bridge of Hewa river located at south of Hilihang Rural Municipality and north of Phidim Municipality on the Mechi highway is swept away by heavy rain flood of Sept 27, 28, 2024. After the bridge was washed away, the link between Panchthar and Taplejung districts has been cut off.  Settlement nearby bridge hit by flood and landslides and public are displaced. 20 houses are fully damaged. 10 houses in Phidim Municipality and 10 houses are in Hilihang Rural Municipality. Chairperson of Phidim Municipality-4, Upendra Lawati, confirmed that the bridge was washed away by the flood. The Bailey bridge had been constructed following the destruction of the original bridge by flooding on June 17, 2023. The floods have also washed away the Feme Kholabo Motorable Bridge on the Phidim-Falot road and the Pucca bridge connecting Phalelung 5 and 6 of the districts. The river swollen due to incessant rainfall also damaged physical infrastructures.

Disaster affected public in these two districts are now in a difficult situation to live due to their damaged houses, crops and livelihoods. So far, flood affected public have not received any kind of significant assistance from the Government of Nepal as well as other donors.  Local municipalities and some social/philanthropic groups have provided occasional assistance during or immediately after the floods.

Similarly, other part of the country also badly affected heavy rainfall of 26-28 September 2024.  So that short-term to long-term humanitarian relief support is need in Nepal to early recover to rehabilitation of public.

HDC Nepal works for Community Development to uplift the social, financial condition of vulnerable groups to make positive change. 

**Human Development Center (HDC) Nepal**

HDC Nepal a non-political, non-profit making organization was established on 5th April 2005 in Jhapa district of Nepal. HDC Nepal has been working primarily in Jhapa but also in some neighbouring districts. HDC Nepal started working in providing vocational training and skill development programs to vulnerable young men and women in Jhapa district with the support from various donors and development partners such as Lutheran World Federation (LWF), one of the oldest international humanitarian agencies working in Nepal. HDC Nepal has also worked in partnerships with the Government bodies like Skill Development Office, a government chapter for skill development. In addition, HDC Nepal has contributed to the peace building and community stabilization process by working in partnership with the Chemonics/USAID/Office of Transition Initiative (OTI) program in 2007 in Jhapa. In the past, HDC Nepal has carried out similar projects working with the Chemonics/USAID/Nepal Transition Initiative (NTI) program.

HDC Nepal has also worked for the Good Governance and Community Development Program (LGCDP) with support from UNDP in Jhapa in 2017. HDC Nepal carried out an intensive Open Defecation Free (ODF) campaign in Birtamod Municipality under the UN-HABITAT, Global Sanitation Fund Program (GSF). Similarly, HDC Nepal has been working with Micro Enterprises Development Program/UNDP for social mobilization and entrepreneur development among the local communities.

HDC Nepal is currently working especially in Eastern Nepal and has implemented multiple projects. From the beginning to 2023 HDC Nepal has reached seven hundred thousand beneficiaries.

**MAJOR PROJECTS DURING FISCAL YEAR 2022-2024**

- Implemented a Micro Enterprise Development Program (MEDEP)/UNDP for social mobilization and entrepreneur development among the local communities, the beneficiaries were over 1000 in Jhapa and Panchthar districts.
- Accomplished “Preparing and Combating Impacts of New variants of COVID-19 in Nepal” project in Jhapa and Morang. Activities were fever screening of the public coming from India to Nepal through the border outpost. Hand washing water tanks were installed in the community schools, awareness/training program activities were conducted, street drama shows were performed, in which the beneficiaries were over 50,000.
- A “Community-Based Disaster Preparedness Efforts in South-Eastern Nepal'' project is being concluded in Jhapa and Udayapur. Key activities included check dam construction at the bank of rivers, tree plantation, model community mobilization, formation and mobilization the various committees and income generation training program to uplift the financial condition of disaster affected people and beneficiaries are over 25,000.
- “Microfinance and Women's Entrepreneurship in Eastern Nepal” project is ongoing in Jhapa, Udayapur and Sankhuwasabha in support of Steamboat Ventures Social Enterprise Fund through Give2Asia. Major activities are being conducted are business plans and skilled based training for poor and marginalized women. The aim of the project is to empower women financially and promote entrepreneurship amongst the target beneficiaries over 500 women. 

**Other Activities:**

A “Saving and Credit Co-operative Limited” is being operated by members of HDC Nepal. This is a community-based cooperative that aims in reaching out to low income and entrepreneur families in five Municipalities. Cooperative mobilizing the saving and credit service to its members and members are over 2300. Cooperative operates in Birtamod Municipality-5 of Jhapa, Eastern Nepal. It is dedicated to improving the social and economic status of the local community and reducing poverty. It has been providing microfinance related services to the members. It is also involved in a variety of social development programs such as livelihoods, skill development, community health, environment and women's empowerment and entrepreneurship. It strives to raise awareness among the poverty-stricken and the downtrodden as well as to establish sustainable development in order to guarantee basic necessities and to achieve self-sufficiency.

**Need of Project:**

HDC Nepal seeks to implement the projects on women entrepreneurship development with skill-based training programs in eastern Nepal to uplift the financial condition of vulnerable groups to make positive changes in the lives of women and marginalized communities. 

HDC Nepal also seeks to develop and implement projects related to disaster mitigation and management in Nepal to make people’s lives safer from multiple disasters.  Nepal is also prone to possible disasters in the future. Besides these, HDC would like to work for improving education and health to support individuals especially the children and women from the socio-economically excluded and marginalized communities.

**Unprecedented Disaster**

*UN | More than 215 people, including 35 children, have been killed and dozens are missing after heavy rains triggered flash floods and landslides across Nepal,* 

*Many of the deaths have occurred in the capital, Kathmandu, which witnessed the most intense rains in over half a century. Hundreds of houses along with schools and hospitals have been damaged and the southern portion of the city remains inundated. The rains, which began on 27 September, and lasted more than 72 hours, also caused extensive damage outside the capital. Forty-four of Nepal’s 77 districts have been affected, and many areas are cut off, with bridges and roads swept away and power lines and telecommunication networks disrupted. Security forces and volunteers have rescued about 4,500 people. It is estimated that over 7,600 families have been severely affected, many of whom lived in informal settlements that have washed away. Furthermore, as water pumps, pipes and cropland have been damaged, access to water and food and their affordability, could become a major challenge in coming days.  (as of 1 October 2024)*
