This is what homelessness prevention looks like, and you can be a huge part of it!
A young family here in Lawrence is doing everything right. Mom works full-time and picks up part-time jobs on top of that. Dad just graduated from college. He's taking care of their two kids at home until he finds a job that pays enough to cover childcare.
This month, rent and the electric bill came due at the same time. They paid the rent so they could keep their home. Then the power got shut off.
This morning I got a message that broke my heart: "We have been so cold the past few nights."
No family in our community should go through that. Not when they're working this hard to move forward.
A utility shutoff is often the first step toward a family losing their home. If we step in now, we keep these kids warm, keep this family together, and keep them housed. Preventing homelessness costs far less, and hurts far less, than climbing back out of it.
This is our chance as their community to step up.
