**Who is Iya Tahirah?**

Iya Tahirah AbuBakr, born River Lee Adams, was raised in Pocahontas, Mississippi as the eldest of seven children in a family of sharecroppers who turned hardship into strength and purpose. At seventeen, she left Mississippi for New Orleans, and in her early twenties moved to New York City, where her community activism within the Black Liberation Movement laid the foundation for a lifelong path of service as a social worker and community leader.

Her spiritual journey led to initiation into **Ifa** by **Ifa Priestess Yemọja**, grounding her in the ancestral Yoruba traditions of West Africa. A graduate of Social and Cultural Anthropology from IU Indianapolis, and trained in shamanism with **Malidoma Somé**, she emerged as Iya Tahirah AbuBakr—medicine woman, diviner, shamanic practitioner, and founder and co-founder of the St. Croix Council of Elders.

Iya Tahirah has dedicated her life to the service of humanity, with a deep commitment to nurturing youth and leaving the Earth better than she found it. Supporting Iya Tahirah ensures her wisdom, resilience, and sacred legacy continue to uplift future generations.

 **What is going on with her health?**

On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Iya Tahirah was found alone in her home and rushed to the hospital, having suffered physical injury from a fall that was a result of an [ischemic stroke.](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/24208-ischemic-stroke-clots) 

At first, the prognosis was dark (she only had days to live). We believe now that this was a combination of her condition (we estimate 36 hours between the stroke and when she was found), and the doctor’s inability to see beyond the facts (age, race) and into the truth. Iya Tahirah has shown that she is cogent, lucid, and generally aware of what is going on. She has begun the long walk to recovery and she needs our support, now.

Reach A Hand Uganda (RAHU) is a youth-centered nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young people with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to make informed life choices. Founded in 2011, RAHU focuses primarily on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), ensuring that young people across Uganda have access to accurate information and quality services.

Our SRHR work includes HIV/AIDs awareness and prevention, information and access to modern contraception, livelihoods, safer sex options, and comprehensive life skills development. At the heart of our mission is the drive to challenge negative social norms that limit young people’s access to quality SRHR resources and services.

We operate in more than 53 districts across Uganda, engaging youth ages 10–19 and 20–30, who are faced with SRHR challenges. We partner with young people living with HIV, refugees, youth whom are in- and out-of-school, and those living with disabilities. We also work closely with men—as users and advocates of family planning, champions, and satisfied users a—recognizing their critical influence on reproductive health decisions within families and communities.

A cornerstone of our impact is our national network of **836+ trained peer educators**, who lead community mobilization, SRHR information sharing, and have a significant impact on service uptake. Their efforts are supported by interpersonal communication agents who promote male involvement in family planning, including informed uptake of vasectomy.

Our digital communications hub, **SautiPlus**, amplifies RAHU’s work by creating and disseminating youth-friendly SRHR content to millions of young people and the adults who influence them—parents, teachers, cultural leaders, policymakers, and more.

SORBA Orlando is the Orlando/Central Florida chapter of the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association.

Founded in 2013, SORBA Orlando has grown to include eight distinct and fun trails in and around Orlando and its suburbs, with more trail miles on the way!  SORBA Orlando trails offer everything from family-friendly places to ride, endurance bike races and time trials, skills-building sections, and opportunities to give back to the community.

**Bal Asha Trust provides comprehensive care to abandoned and destitute children for 38 years.** Our child protection services ensure immediate shelter in their children's homes.  **We have supported over 6,000 children through our programs.**

**We provide physical care, health services, education and well-balanced meals,** including formula milk for infants and four healthy meals a day for older children.  Our children go to different schools as per their ability. **We have two visiting pediatricians who treat children with a range of conditions,** from undernourishment,  Hep. B, Albinism and HIV to cerebral palsy and developmental delays.

**We also assist with legal procedures to reunite children with their biological parents across India or find caring Adoptive parents.** The goal is to ensure that every child in our care has the opportunity to grow up in a loving and supportive environment.

Our child development & family strengthening programs support vulnerable children in communities with Nutrition, Educational Sponsorships, and developmental therapies.  We create awareness in communities and among various stakeholders on Juvenile Justice and Adoption. As famine tightens its grip and markets collapse, Gaza Soup Kitchen is still boiling pots—feeding 1,000 people every day with dignity and determination.

We were the first soup kitchen in North Gaza to lean on local farmers and forage from nature to keep people alive. When others paused, we adapted. When supplies ran out, we improvised.

Today, we operate across 11 kitchens, run a community clinic, and deliver clean water and hot meals to hospitals—even in the hardest-hit zones.

This is survival work, done by people living through the very crisis they’re responding to.

We are musicians from Ukraine, raising money at our concerts to support our country, our city, and our people.

**Who We Are**

KMLX began as the Philanthropic Arm of the Ukrainian musical group [Kommuna Lux](https://kommunalux.com/).  When war came to their country in 2022, these musicians soon realized they could do more good with their instruments than with guns.  They began touring Europe to support charitable causes in Odesa. That success led them to the USA, where they founded this 501-c3 nonprofit to streamline the donation process.  Soon two more music groups joined the cause, sending money to projects in Lviv and Kyiv.

99.9% of your donation goes to Ukraine.  We have no paid staff, no office, no overhead--our only "administrative costs" are for our annual business license, wire transfer fees when we send money to Ukraine, and occasional supplies. **Our History**

Kommuna Lux decided to tour the United States in 2023, in hopes of connecting with Americans, raising awareness and empathy for the war in Ukraine, and raising some money too.  The tour was a huge success on all fronts!  Donations were so generous that we founded this 501-c3 nonprofit for our future tours. With two US tours planned in 2024, the band felt like they could strive for something greater than the small, local Odesa projects they had always supported in the past.  They soon found a willing partner in the [Rotary E-Club of Ukraine](https://rotaryeclubukraine.org.ua/), who had numerous projects in need of funds.  The musicians decided to help supply a new type of hospital bed for victims of severe burns, to hospitals serving the front lines.  That project was funded and completed in 2025!

Now the band has chosen to support two Rotary projects dedicated to children:  [the construction of a new playground in their beloved Odesa](https://rotaryd2232ukraine.org/rcprojects/christmas24/project?prid=133), and a larger project titled "Ukrainian Children Don't Have a Stop Button: Early Intervention Services in Conflict Zones."  For every dollar donated at a Kommuna Lux concert, 30% will go directly to these Rotary projects. 

The other 70% of your donation will support our regular grassroots causes, such as food, water, and medicine to besieged cities, bomb shelters and other safety projects in our hometown of Odesa, and our direct support of the heroes at the front with gear, tools, and vehicles.

Sentinel transforms pandemic prevention and response through cutting-edge technology, global collaboration, and local empowerment.

Infectious disease outbreaks have caused more illness, death, and economic loss than any other crisis in history. Pathogens kill millions of people each year and hit the most vulnerable communities the hardest. They go further—exposing and exploiting the deepest cracks in our societies and the risks are rising. 

 The forces driving pandemics are accelerating. Climate change is increasing human exposure to pathogens through animals and insects. Habitat encroachment and industrial agriculture are raising the risk of spillover. Global trade and travel speed disease spread, while conflict and instability weaken health systems. New biotechnologies pose engineered threats that current systems cannot detect. Over the past decade, the number of epidemics has grown by 20% worldwide. Between February and June 2025 alone, more than 70 outbreaks were reported across Africa. Yet global readiness is faltering. In the past year, U.S. investments in frontline health systems and disease surveillance have been sharply reduced. Funding cuts have disrupted networks and delayed the deployment of critical tools, especially in regions most vulnerable to outbreaks. Health programs across West and Central Africa now face rising threats with fewer resources and limited external support, leaving the world more exposed- with some experts estimating the probability of a pandemic in the next decade to exceed one in four.
 
Amid these mounting challenges, we stand at a historic moment of possibility. Sentinel, a pandemic early warning prevention and response program, is built to meet this moment: a locally led, technology-enabled model for proactive public health, integrating diagnostics, data, and training to stop outbreaks before they spread. 

Sentinel is an outbreak surveillance framework, designed to detect pathogenic threats in real-time and prepare the global community to stop diseases before they spread. It brings advanced science to the frontlines through a next-generation pandemic prevention system built around three core pillars. DETECT delivers rapid diagnostics and genomic surveillance. CONNECT integrates laboratory, clinical, and genomic data into real-time insights. EMPOWER invests in training, infrastructure, and institutional capacity so countries can lead their own outbreak responses.

DETECT: Timely diagnostics and sequencing are essential for early outbreak detection and effective response. Yet these capabilities remain limited in many LMICs, even for high-priority pathogens like Lassa, Ebola, and Marburg. Too often, health systems act only after outbreaks are widespread, costing precious time and lives. Sentinel’s DETECT pillar delivers speed, affordability, and accessibility through a tiered approach to diagnostic design and implementation.

CONNECT: Fragmented systems delay response and allow outbreaks to spread unchecked. When data are siloed, public health leaders lose time and visibility, undermining containment efforts. In contrast, integrated systems support faster, more effective action. Sentinel’s CONNECT pillar builds the digital backbone for outbreak response. Through interoperable dashboards and analytic platforms, it streamlines data flow, strengthens each stage of detection, analysis, and control, and enables real-time decision-making.

EMPOWER: Building local leadership and scientific capacity is central to Sentinel’s mission. Although over 60% of emerging infectious diseases originate in Africa and Asia, fewer than 10% of African countries had genomic surveillance at the start of COVID-19. Africa faces a shortfall of more than one million health workers, including critical gaps in genomics and data science. Sentinel’s EMPOWER pillar builds sustainable, locally led outbreak response by investing in people and communities. It enables local experts to detect and respond early with solutions grounded in context, shortening the path from innovation to public health practice and building resilient systems from within.

The foundation for Sentinel was laid over two decades through a 20-year partnership between Prof. Christian Happi, a Nigerian infectious disease expert, and Prof. Pardis Sabeti, a U.S.-based computational geneticist. Over the years this collaboration has established operational programs in Nigeria and Sierra Leone that connect health workers in rural clinics and hospitals with national and international public health leadership. **To date more than 3,000 public health workers from 53 of 54 countries in Africa** have been trained through Sentinel’s approach.

Sentinel-supported teams have enabled early detection and rapid response to Marburg, mpox, Lassa, dengue, and COVID-19, providing critical data to inform government action. 

COVID-19: Sentinel rapidly expanded genomic and diagnostic capacity across Africa, establishing pipelines with national partners. In March 2020, IGH sequenced Africa’s first SARS-CoV-2 genome within 72 hours of sample receipt. Sentinel supported testing for over 30 million people, deployed SHINE and CARMEN technologies, and led genomic surveillance in 26 countries. This work helped identify one of the first globally recognized variants of concern. Sentinel also trained scientists from 53 African countries, strengthening long-term preparedness. The Sentinel team also led one of the largest diagnostic and sequencing centers in the U.S. and supported global data sharing and informatics efforts.

Mpox: In 2023, Sentinel traced an mpox outbreak in Nigeria to oil workers in Rivers State, guiding the NCDC’s targeted vaccination strategy. Sentinel also hosted a three-week genomics bootcamp that trained regional professionals in real-time sequencing and analysis. Genomic data revealed sustained human transmission of the West African subtype, with signs of adaptation and rising pandemic potential. When an outbreak emerged in Sierra Leone in 2024, local public health teams, supported by Sentinel, initiated sequencing and shared real-time data. Analysis identified a new highly transmissible G.1 variant spreading beyond previously affected groups. Sentinel tools and team members remain central to guiding the national response.

 Marburg: In 2024, Sentinel supported the Rwandan government during a Marburg outbreak in Kigali. IGH provided outbreak reconstruction and real- time sequencing, while Prof. Happi co-chaired the national scientific response. The outbreak was contained at 66 cases, with the case fatality rate reduced to 22%, far below historical averages.

Building off of these successes, Sentinel is poised for its next phase: deepening national integration, expanding its reach, and advancing a globally transferable model for pandemic prevention. We will achieve full national implementation in Sierra Leone and move toward this in Nigeria, embedding surveillance into national systems and incorporating a One Health approach that addresses climate-linked and zoonotic threats. Expansion will continue to Senegal, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where strong partners and readiness are in place. In parallel, we are globalizing Sentinel’s tools, data platforms, and training programs to create a lasting framework for pandemic prevention.

Sentinel will help millions benefit from earlier detection, faster response, stronger systems, and a globally connected early warning network. This is the moment to transform pandemic prevention and safeguard global health security for generations to come.

Taimaka has reimagined pediatric malnutrition treatment to make it **more cost-effective and scalable**. We’ve developed a malnutrition treatment model that is:

2. Leverages digitally-enabled community health workers (CHWs) to deliver care to the most vulnerable communities. 

So far, we’ve used our model to treat 6,000+ children out of existing government hospitals in northeastern Nigeria with world-class recovery rates of 95%+. Learn To Play (LTP) was founded in 2017 with a mission of weaving mindful play into the fabric of African early learning for every child, starting with Botswana. Faced with the stark reality that three out of four children in Botswana lack access to early childhood education, and recognising the broader continental challenge where, by 2050, an estimated 400 million children in Africa will be at risk of poor social, emotional, and mental well-being, LTP is on a mission to change these trajectories through play-based learning.



Our organisation is committed to making early childhood education accessible and meaningful across Africa by implementing innovative programs such as playgroups, parenting programs, and mindful play. At the heart of our approach is the concept of mindful play, which emphasises activities that support children's emotional awareness and self-regulation. By engaging in mindful play, children develop a strong foundation for lifelong learning and well-being, equipping them to navigate challenges, build healthy relationships, and enhance their cognitive abilities.



Since our inception, we have established a robust presence in Botswana and beyond. LTP began with a pilot program in three communities, focusing on playgroup activities designed to prepare children aged 2-5 for school readiness. These playgroups are led by trained Maatla Mamas (“Strong Mothers” in Setswana) from the local communities, emphasising social and emotional learning through mindful play practices. Today, our playgroup program operates in 11 communities across seven districts in Botswana, impacting over 550 children daily and providing sustainable livelihoods for 35 Maatla Mamas. This growth reflects our deep commitment to listening to and understanding the needs of the communities we serve, allowing us to tailor our programs to meet local challenges effectively.



In addition to our playgroup initiative, LTP has developed two additional programs to address the diverse needs of early learners and their caregivers. The Parent Playbox is designed for children aged 0-6 and their caregivers, equipping families with the resources, activities, and confidence to engage in weekly play-based learning at home. This program fosters early learning and enhances family well-being, recognizing the crucial role that caregivers play in a child's development. Our third program, the Mindful Way, is Africa’s first mindful play initiative, introducing daily 15-minute social and emotional activities to complement existing early learning programs for children aged 3-6. These programs are not only implemented in Botswana but have also been adopted by partner organisations in three other African countries, allowing us to extend our impact across the continent.



A key aspect of our work is the emphasis on sustainability and community involvement. By training partner organisations across Africa to implement our Parent Playbox and Mindful Way programs, we ensure that our initiatives are delivered by individuals who are deeply connected to the communities they serve. This approach fosters a sense of ownership and ensures that our programs are culturally relevant and sustainable in the long term.



Our commitment to evidence-based practice is another cornerstone of our organisation. In partnership with Children On The Edge and The University of Chichester in the UK, we developed the Play-based Programme Assessment Tool, a comprehensive method to evaluate the quality of play-based early learning programs. This tool includes both direct child assessments and environmental assessments focusing on safety, resources, relationships, and inclusivity. Our data-driven approach has yielded impressive results: 93% of the children in LTP programs meet their school readiness milestones before entering primary school, and children participating in our Mindful Way program have shown a 33% improvement in social and emotional learning outcomes.



Looking to the future, LTP is committed to expanding our footprint both within Botswana and across Africa. We are currently collaborating closely with the government of Botswana to identify priority areas and ensure that we are providing access to early learning in the regions where it is most needed. Additionally, we are supporting existing government pre-schools with training and curriculum development to enhance the quality of education provided.



Beyond Botswana, we are actively working with partner organisations in other African countries to train them in our programs, augmenting existing early learning initiatives and strengthening family support systems. Over the next five years, we aim to reach 200,000 children, caregivers, and educators across Africa through our innovative programs.

The Ellis County Children's Advocacy Center is dedicated to providing a safe and supportive environment for child abuse victims and their families. We offer comprehensive services, including forensic interviews, counseling, and advocacy, to help children find hope and healing and seek justice. Our multidisciplinary team collaborates closely with law enforcement, medical professionals, and child protective services to ensure that each child receives the care and protection they need. By fostering a compassionate and child-focused approach, we strive to break the cycle of abuse, provide the support child victims of crime need, and build a brighter future for the children in our community.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971.

In over 70 countries around the world, MSF saves lives by providing medical aid where it is needed most—in armed conflicts, epidemics, natural disasters, and other crises.  The people who work for MSF are doctors, nurses, midwives, epidemiologists, water-and-sanitation experts and many others who combine their professional expertise with a commitment to the world’s most vulnerable people.  Each year, these medical teams run close to 470 projects where they care for millions of people.  

As an organization, MSF is neutral and operates independently of any political, military, or religious agendas. It does not take sides in armed conflicts, provides care based on needs alone, and advocates for increased independent access to victims of conflict and disaster as required under international humanitarian law. Medical teams conduct evaluations on the ground to determine a population's medical needs before opening programs, aiming to fill gaps that exist (rather than replicating services that are already offered) or reach communities that are not being assisted.  Over the years, the organization has been the recipient of several awards that recognize its work, including the 1998 Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize, the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize, the 2012 J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding, the 2015 Lasker-Bloomberg Public Service Award, and the 2017 Pardes Humanitarian Prize for Mental Health.

Despite all the progress over the last 15 years, the work has only taken place on 30% of GreenEarth's endowed land. and we have ways to go!  We can plant 40,000 more trees on our Phase 1 development of 32 hectares plus the need to build access roads, pathways and hiking trails, before we hop on over to our Phase 2 development of 75 hectares.   We can continue to scale up our livelihoods in organic agriculture by continuing to build the density of our raw materials  in hardwoods, fruit-bearing trees and ornamental plants, if we were to dream big and be a global purveyor of certified-organic products, which will bring in a tremendous amount of livelihood for the rural poor in our catchment community.  

Our **MISSION** is to preserve the environment, to adhere to sound and sustainable organic agricultural practices and to help in the alleviation of poverty through livelihood, education and community development.
