Honoring the courage of kids undergoing treatment at Duke Children's Hospital with recreation programming and opportunities.

The Scheyer Family Kid Captain program provides children at Duke Children’s Hospital access to regular, adaptive recreation and movement opportunities such as basketball, soccer, yoga, and modified athletic training.

A dedicated on-site coordinator manages the program, organizes activities, and recruits volunteersas part of the Duke Children’s Hospital Child Life department. In addition, children are given the chance to participate in special events and recognition moments, including Dribble for Victory and being honored as Kid Captain of the Day at a Duke Basketball game—creating unforgettable memories while raising awareness of their resilience.

Since our founding in 1986, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) has been the leading organization building the movement to foster evidence-based approaches to psychedelics and the people who use them. The ongoing, global War on Drugs has been justified by bad science, racism, and fear for too long: it has led to mass incarceration; erosion of civil liberties; ecological damage; economic waste; and the public health polycrisis of adulteration, poisoning, and overdose. Many of these harmful effects have disproportionately impacted the most historically exploited and oppressed communities. Consequently, we believe societies worldwide have an obligation to account for and repair those harms, to the extent possible.

LEAF411 501(c)(3) nonprofit is a national Cannabis Nurse hotline and guidance service. Leaf411’s mission is to provide education and directional support to the public about the safe and effective use of cannabis. LEAF411 is committed to expanding healthcare equity by ensuring consumers have free or low-cost access to evidence-based information.

LEAF411 serves as an unbiased source for information from licensed professional nurses with specific training on cannabis and how it can impact specific conditions and symptoms. We help consumers and patients make well-informed decisions about integrating cannabis and hemp CBD into their healthcare regimen.

Consumers with a quick cannabis question can call the free Leaf411 hotline at 844-LEAF411 (844-532-3411) to speak with a nurse and have their questions answered. Consumers who have multiple questions or would like more in-depth information can schedule a low-cost guidance session with a licensed cannabis nurse.

The Palestine Children's Relief Fund was established in 1992 by concerned humanitarians in the USA to bring injured and sick children for free medical care they could not get locally. The story of our founding is written up here. Since then, we have sent over 2,000 sick and injured children for free medical care, as well as sponsored hundreds of volunteer medical teams from all over the world to treat tens of thousands of sick and injured youths in local hospitals. PCRF also has built two pediatric cancer departments in Palestine and has several more major programs and projects taking place to help support the development of a sustainable health-care system there. We are a grassroots organization depending on the support of thousands of volunteers all over the world to help us achieve our humanitarian mission.

Evidence Action scales evidence-based and cost-effective programs to reduce the burden of poverty. 

Evidence Action was founded in 2013 to address a big gap in the fight against global poverty – many of the most promising interventions are either implemented at a very small scale, or not at all. We set out to address this gap by building programs that would scale evidence-based and cost-effective interventions, leading to significant improvements in quality of life for hundreds of millions of people.

Our model worked. Since then, our interventions have reached more than 530 million people. This success is achieved through the dedication and talent of our staff, the hard work of our partners, and the commitment of our supporters.

Our Accelerator is the engine for our new program development. To find the most cost-effective solutions in the world, we explore untapped opportunities with the greatest potential for impact. Through a rigorous process, we test groundbreaking health and development interventions, selecting those with a proven ability to reduce the burden of poverty at scale. **Safe Water Now**

We provide sustained safe water access to communities through water treatment – one of the most cost-effective ways to prevent childhood illnesses and death. Safe Water Now programming in Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, and India uses innovative, low-cost approaches like chlorine dispensers and automatic in-line chlorination. With local government and community buy-in, we reach nearly 10 million people with safe water access and have saved the lives of more than 15,000 children under 5 years old. Now, we are scaling in partnership with the Government of India to reach tens of millions more.

**Deworm the World** 

We help improve children's health, education, and long-term wellbeing by treating parasitic worm

infections at schools. In partnership with governments in Kenya, Nigeria, India, and Pakistan, Evidence Action designs, scales, and sustains cost-effective mass deworming programs. Since 2014, Deworm the World has helped governments deliver 2 billion deworming treatments to children, dramatically reducing worm prevalence and collectively increasing economic productivity by an estimated $23 billion USD.

**Equal Vitamin Access**

We combat the leading cause of childhood malnutrition and disability in low- and middle-income countries by helping to deliver essential supplementation. Equal Vitamin Access provides end-to-end support to governments in India and Malawi to address anemia by leveraging our school-based deworming platform to offer iron and folic acid supplementation cost effectively. In 2023 alone, our program reached 35.8 million children with weekly treatments, giving them a

better chance to develop into strong, healthy adults.

**Syphilis-Free Start**

We safeguard the health of pregnant women and their unborn children by enabling access to low-cost syphilis screening and treatment as part of prenatal care. We partner with governments in Liberia, Cameroon, and Zambia to prevent disability, neonatal

mortality, and stillbirths resulting from congenital syphilis. Syphilis-Free Start’s timely detection and treatment prevented 2,300 adverse outcomes such as blindness, neurological issues, and hearing loss between 2021 and 2023, including 1,300 lives saved.

🍲 Gaza Soup Kitchen: Feeding 10,000 People Daily

As famine tightens its grip and markets collapse, Gaza Soup Kitchen is still boiling pots—feeding 1,000 people every day with dignity and determination.

We were the first soup kitchen in North Gaza to lean on local farmers and forage from nature to keep people alive. When others paused, we adapted. When supplies ran out, we improvised.

Today, we operate across 11 kitchens, run a community clinic, and deliver clean water and hot meals to hospitals—even in the hardest-hit zones.

This is survival work, done by people living through the very crisis they’re responding to.

The PDMSh was founded in 2014 to provide medical aid in the areas of the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) and, since May 2018, the Joint Forces Operation (JFO). Before full-scale invasion of Ukraine, our volunteer medics had provided timely and qualified medical care to more than 56,000 patients. We worked at 50 locations in the east of Ukraine, including frontline hospitals, entry-exit control points (EECPs) and temporary deployment points.

Now we face greater challenges due to unprovoked and brutal invasion of our country. Since the first day of this invasion, our dedicated volunteers have been on the frontline in combat areas across the country. They selflessly risk their lives to help both civilians and combatants, the wounded and the sick.

After our active participation in the Kyiv campaign in February-April 2022, where we managed to simultaneously provide 12 ambulances and carry out thousands of trips and medical evacuations from the front line, our focus shifted to Eastern Ukraine. In May 2022, we set up medical stations in the east of Ukraine, including in Bakhmut, Sloviansk, Chasiv Yar, Kostyantynivka, Lyman, Rai Oleksandrivka and Symy (the latter three are still operating).

The big international organizations like International Red Cross (ICRC) or Doctors Without Borders (MSF) are not present due to the extreme and difficult conditions.  We are however just a volunteer organization, and we need your support now more than ever.  While working in the most difficult areas in the east of Ukraine from May 2022 to May 2024, Pirogov First Volunteer Mobile Hospital volunteers provided medical assistance to more than 47 224 patients. 

Throughout its operation, PDMSh has provided assistance to 103 224 patients.

The active areas of development of PFVMH are increasing the number of medical teams and ambulances that will work as emergency units for medical evacuations from the most difficult areas in the east. The expansion of the voluntary membership of the PFVMH will require more funds to ensure the accommodation and security of the personnel and their ability to treat wondered, which will allow us to save even more lives.

Among other necessities, there are the capability of the fast and complete maintenance of vehicles, availability of sufficient amounts of fuel, medical products, and medicines, as well as proper conditions for accommodation of volunteers and ensuring their protection.

**About cluster headache**

Cluster headache ("suicide headache") is often considered the most painful medical condition. Patients [rate it](https://doi.org/10.1111/head.14021) as significantly more painful than childbirth, kidney stones, gunshot wounds, and bone fractures. Standard painkillers don't help.

Even in wealthy nations with advanced healthcare, **hundreds of thousands** still experience torture-like suffering every year. About 50% of all patients have contemplated suicide. At the same time, global funding for cluster headache is virtually nonexistent. **This crisis cannot go on any longer.**

**Psychedelics save lives**

Psychedelics like psilocybin, LSD, and DMT have shown promise in treating cluster headache pain, in some cases with 70–80% of surveyed users reporting significant relief. Some patients even achieve complete remission.

Often, low, sub-hallucinogenic doses are more than enough to prevent clusters or stop attacks acutely. Patients could self-medicate safely and with minimal side effects.

However, only a tiny minority of patients have access to these life-saving treatments. Given the severity of the pain, the situation is analogous to refusing anesthesia to patients during surgery. **This is absolutely unacceptable.**

Does it work? There is strong evidence that distributing LLINs reduces child mortality and malaria cases. AMF conducts post-distribution surveys of completed distributions to determine whether LLINs have reached their intended destinations and how long they remain in good condition. AMF's post-distribution surveys have generally found positive results but have some methodological limitations. (More)

What do you get for your dollar? We estimate that the cost to purchase and distribute an AMF-funded net is $4.95, or $4.65 excluding in-kind contributions from governments. The numbers of deaths averted and other benefits of distributing LLINs are a function of a number of difficult-to-estimate factors, which we discuss in detail below. (More)

Is there room for more funding? We believe that AMF is likely to be constrained by funding. We estimate that AMF could use up to an additional $37.8 million to support LLIN distributions that will occur between now and late 2023.

Focus on a program with excellent evidence of effectiveness and cost-effectiveness.
Processes for ensuring that nets reach their intended recipients and monitoring whether they remain in homes and in good condition over the long-term.
Room for more funding – we believe AMF will be able to use additional funds to deliver additional nets.
Transparency – AMF shares significant information about its work with us and we are able to closely follow and understand its work.

There are around 30,000 women in Ethiopia living with devastating childbirth injuries called obstetric fistula, because they don't know help is available. An estimated 1,000 women suffer a new fistula injury every year. Catherine’s trailblazing **Hamlin Model of Care** - today replicated around the world - finds, treats and holistically heals these women, restoring their lives.

Women living with childbirth injuries suffer great trauma. Following obstructed labour, they are left incontinent and usually lose their baby. They are shunned from their community and live hidden not knowing help available.

In a single year, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia treats more than 6,000 patients and perform more than 2,000 surgeries.

We also provide counseling and a range of vocational training to support nearly 1,000 women in their recovery. A woman's healing journey starts the moment she arrives at a Hamlin fistula hospital. She is given a Comfort Package containing a Hamlin blanket that has been lovingly made by a volunteer, hygiene items, a new nightgown and slippers, and a homecoming dress.

These are utter luxuries for the many women who arrive at a Hamlin hospital without shoes, wearing the only stained clothes they own. When they wrap themselves in their Hamlin blanket, they feel the warm embrace of people like you.

Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia's work is centered in Ethiopia, a country with one of the highest fertility and maternal mortality rates in the world. Our vision is simple: To eradicate obstetric fistula. Forever.

For more than six decades, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia has implemented our world-recognized approach to the holistic treatment of women and girls with obstetric fistulas — severe injuries resulting from prolonged, unrelieved and obstructed labor, typically in the absence of skilled birth attendants.

In 93% of cases, the mother suffers not only dramatic tissue damage, but she also loses her new baby. Nerve damage and weakened pelvic muscles make many daily tasks unmanageable. And, women are also often ostracized from their communities – cut off from avenues to leading a full, healthy and happy life.

The Hamlin Model of Care – The World's Leading Approach to Treating Obstetric Fistula

Dr Catherine Hamlin pioneered an approach to treating obstetric fistula, including developing a new surgical technique, that dramatically changes the lives of women and girls — in some cases in no more than an hour.

The Hamlin Model of Care is unique because it is not just about repairing injury, but restoring dignity. Hamlin's Rehabilitation and Reintegration Program at Desta Mender offers counseling, literacy and numeracy classes. Additional programs for vocational and life skills training help women find sustainable employment or establish their own small businesses. Today, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia is staffed by more than 550 Ethiopian medical professionals and five regional hospitals have been established to respond to the significant demand for fistula surgery.

To accelerate change for women in Ethiopia, our Project Zero teams will go from door-to-door, in every Woreda (district) to identify women living with historic fistula cases and organize care and treatment. At the same time, we will strengthen maternal healthcare services, to reduce the incidence of birth injuries, and increase awareness, so women have the tools and knowledge they need to give birth safely. Lasting change for women and girls requires building a workforce of skilled birth attendants. Through our Hamlin College of Midwives, we recruit women from rural communities in Ethiopia to learn the Hamlin Model of Care during a four-year Bachelor of Science in Midwifery program.  The curriculum is fully certified and includes the precondition that students conduct at least 40 deliveries before they graduate. Upon graduation, Hamlin midwives return to their villages – today staffing over 90 rural midwifery clinics in remote areas.

We are a community-based, non-profit organization that serves the homeless and at-risk populations of the Mid-Peninsula. We establish environments and build relationships where community volunteers can provide food and clothing, as well as referrals for shelter, addiction recovery, and other personal support.

Street Life Ministries (or SLM) began in 2001 at the downtown Menlo Park train station. Today, due to the help of many people, it now serves over 35,000 meals a year, five nights a week, in Menlo Park, Palo Alto and Redwood City. For 20 years SLM gatherings have built a reputation as the one consistent place the homeless can count on. Whether it is a holiday, a cloudy or rainy day, SLM never varies from the set schedule, giving the homeless a stable option throughout the year.

SLM is an established 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a board of directors, and is very different from many “feeding ministries.” It serves a unique role in the way it cares for the homeless and the hungry in San Mateo/Santa Clara Counties. Hot, home cooked meals served in outdoor venues are less threatening for our homeless neighbors, fostering a safe environment for relational connections to develop with the SLM leaders and volunteers. These connections build trust for guiding homeless friends toward healthier decisions, medical assistance, detox, rehab, housing, mentorship and counseling. In addition to food and encouragement, SLM provides clothing, toiletry kits, sleeping bags, medical supplies, temporary shelter, recovery services and job assistance to those in need. 

SLM is also unique because it places its staff and its services “in the streets”, and “in the camps”, where the homeless live. It reaches more homeless people directly in those street locations than traditional professional service agencies. Additionally, no other homeless non-profit in the area provides local residents with the large number (over 6000 hours per year, estimated) of volunteer hours of opportunity to meet directly and be served on a face to face basis as we do. Homeless folks need love, care, trustworthy friends, and reliable, regular support to improve and/or recover. SLM is “in the trenches and on the street” every day, helping our homeless neighbors. SLM’s outreach can be accessed at all hours of the day and night.
