CISDI advances Indonesia’s health sector through research, advocacy & community-driven interventions for a just & healthy society.

HISTORY

The Center for Indonesia's Strategic Development Initiatives (CISDI) was established in 2014 through the Pencerah Nusantara program, an initiative program to strengthen primary health services in Indonesia. Diah Saminarsih, founder of CISDI, initiated the Pencerah Nusantara program in 2011 while serving as Deputy Special Envoy for the President of the Republic of Indonesia for the Millennium Development Goals. Pencerah Nusantara was developed to be a multidisciplinary collaboration-based movement to strengthen access to primary health care in Indonesia.

Pencerah Nusantara's journey in strengthening primary health services has always been on a good track since it was founded. In 2015, Pencerah Nusantara was adopted and expanded at the national level by the Indonesian Ministry of Health through the Nusantara Sehat program.

While strengthening primary health services, CISDI also aims to reduce the complexity of health sector problems. This commitment is embodied in our concern for tobacco control and issues related to risky food consumption. Moreover, CISDI is developed to be a non-profit organization that accommodates various strategies, innovations, and collaborations to create an equal, empowered, and prosperous Indonesian society in a healthy paradigm.

Our vision is to build a healthy, equal, and just Indonesia. The following five key missions support our vision:

1. Building strategic partnerships and forging collaborations with diverse stakeholders to reach development goals.
2. Strengthening public health policy implementation.
3. Encouraging active youth and community participation on development issues.
4. Advocating equal access to health care.
5. Building awareness of public health issues.

ACTIVITIES

1] Primary Health Care Strengthening

a. Pencerah Nusantara (PN) is an initiative run by CISDI since 2012, revitalising primary health care by sending young professionals to Puskesmas. With synergistic cross-sector collaboration, PN aims to improve public health by strengthening primary care through knowledge management, service improvement, and community empowerment. Over time, it evolved into a programme fostering community and multi-stakeholder engagement.

b. In 2021, CISDI developed the Responsive-Inclusive Health Centres and Active Communities (PN-PRIMA) programme, continuing the PN model to provide primary services responsive to community needs, reaching vulnerable groups inclusively in four areas: MCH, NCDs, Infant Nutrition Improvement, and Immunisation. Innovations include involving community health workers, training, mentoring, integration with private facilities, and supervisory support. PN-PRIMA operates in 12 Puskesmas in Depok and Bekasi, combining community-based approaches with digital technology.

c. Keluarga Berimun (Immune Families) is a PN-PRIMA campaign with the Ministry of Health and local health offices to support the Complete Basic Immunisation programme via social media and digital platforms, providing accurate information to build parents’ confidence in immunisation.

2] Strategic Planning for Health System Reform

 Shaping a new future for the National Health System is essential. The pandemic reminded the need for robust planning. Current top-down approaches often miss ground realities, making reform a strategic issue for CISDI. We believe a fair, resilient system requires inclusive, evidence-based planning across sectors. CISDI contributes through research (Health Outlook, Foresight, White Paper) and participation in Global Public Investment.

3] Tobacco Control

Tobacco consumption is the top preventable cause of death, yet youth smoking in Indonesia is rising, risking NCDs. Since 2016, CISDI has worked on prevention education, tobacco tax advocacy, and smoking cessation programmes with the Ministry of Health. Indonesia has not ratified the FCTC, keeping tobacco affordable. We advocate for higher, simpler tobacco taxes—a proven way to reduce prevalence.

4] Healthy Diets

In 2021, 19.5 million Indonesians had diabetes, with treatment costs reaching 21.2 trillion rupiah. Indonesia ranks third in consumption of Packaged Sweetened Drinks (MBDK), a diabetes risk factor. CISDI addressed this via studies, policy advocacy, public campaigns, and awareness-raising through the Food Policy programme and Forum for Young Indonesians (FYI). FYI discusses development, social, and health issues, focusing on reducing sugar, salt, fat, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) consumption.

5] TRACK SDGs

Since 2019, CISDI’s TRACK SDGs has supported the Sustainable Development Goals by acting as a monitoring, information, and knowledge-sharing platform for non-state actors in Indonesia. It facilitates discussions, collaborations, and mapping of development actors to integrate goals and achieve the SDGs.

SORBA Orlando is the Orlando/Central Florida chapter of the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association.

Founded in 2013, SORBA Orlando has grown to include eight distinct and fun trails in and around Orlando and its suburbs, with more trail miles on the way!  SORBA Orlando trails offer everything from family-friendly places to ride, endurance bike races and time trials, skills-building sections, and opportunities to give back to the community.

By partnering with the community SORBA Orlando builds and maintains our local trails. Your support goes directly to materials, workday essentials, and training needed to keep the area rolling in a fun, sustainable and safe environment.

We bring several events to the community including the annual Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day and have sponsored The Battle of Snow Hill and Markham Woods Masher endurance races for several years.

What does catalytic impact look like?

- **We trigger systemic improvements**: We support investments that create new long-term infrastructure or increase the cost-effectiveness of existing systems.

- **We crowd in capital**: We provide early-stage funding that attracts substantial follow-on investment for cost-effective opportunities.

### Our Approach to Grantmaking

When evaluating potential grants, we consider several key points:

- **Counterfactual impact**. Our grants are designed to create meaningful outcomes that would not otherwise have happened. This means that you can rely on the Funds to create meaningful, real change, rather than just maintaining the status quo.
- **Impact-driven philanthropy**. This fund prioritizes the highest-impact solutions to challenges. We assess where the gaps are, which opportunities may be neglected by other funders, and where the biggest wins are in terms of making the biggest difference.
-  **The organization’s funding gap**. Not all organizations are set up to scale programs and some may not be able to productively absorb large amounts of unsolicited funding at any given point. We evaluate all potential grantees’ capacity for growth and consider how much money they could put to good use.
-  **Organizational strength**. Particularly with unrestricted funding, it’s important to have trust in the leadership and capacity of the organizations we support. We look at their track record of success and their transparency about failures as well as successes, and we only support those organizations which are exceptionally well run.
- **Time-critical opportunities and funding certainty**. Sometimes there are time-critical opportunities which require fast decisions. We will use the Fund to make grants that enable such short-term opportunities and stability for high-impact funding opportunities thereby increasing the impact compared to individual giving to specific organizations.

Founders Pledge reviews [requests for funding](https://www.founderspledge.com/requests-for-funding) from organizations, but does not guarantee we can fill funding requests.

**How frequently will you make grants from the Fund?**

In general, Fund Managers will review grantmaking decisions on a quarterly basis, based on the value of Funds and the available options for high-impact grantmaking. We may disburse funds outside of quarterly review dates if we become aware of a particularly promising and time-sensitive funding.

**How will my contribution be used?**

All funds are granted out — every dollar contributed to the Fund will be used to make grants directly to end-user organizations creating a real difference.

Autism Empowerment

We develop community-led, circular solutions to end plastic pollution in remote coastal areas, grounded in local heritage.

We are an East African circular economy movement that in 2018 built the world’s first 100% recycled plastic sailing dhow.  Built from 10 tonnes of beach plastic, it was covered in 30,000 pieces of discarded flipflops collected from Kenyas beaches, hence its name 'The Flipflopi'. 

We employ a “full-systems” approach to beating plastic pollution through 

(1) education and awareness campaigns, 

(2) waste-plastic innovation rooted in heritage, and 

(3) influencing legislative change to ban single-use plastics. 

Over the course of three expeditions, the Flipflopi sailing boat has proved to be an exceptional campaign tool to catalyse engagement and action all three of the above focus areas. Watch our latest video, "[Stubborn Optimism - A Plastic Revolution" 
](https://youtu.be/RjVd7RR\_vPs?si=5XrC37OrODfvgnZJ)The 2019 Lamu to Zanzibar expedition, conducted in partnership with UN Environment, brought international media attention - 890 million people saw our message, we hosted the presidents and government ministers on the boat, and played a central role in national plastic bag bans that came into effect in both Kenya and Tanzania shortly after our campaign.

In 2020 Flipflopi Co-founder was awarded Kenya’s highest civilian honour for his contribution to preserving Kenya's Swahili culture and his environmental campaigning.  

In 2022, Flipflopi was awarded the FCDO’s prestigious SMEP Grant to tackle marine ecosystem health challenges which led to the creation of an innovative community-centered programme that is ‘closing the loop’ on waste plastic in the Lamu Archipelago (on the coast of northern Kenya) by combining indigenous knowledge of boatbuilding with modern innovation.  In a 24 month perirod we have collected 288 tonnes of plastic from the enviroment within the Lamu region. 

In 2022 we set up a Heritage Boat Building centre that runs pioneering classes teaching Dhow building and traditional craftsmanship to mixed gender classes of young people from Lamu County.  Students on these 12 week courses have built everything from ornately carved traditional Lamu chairs to Swahili Dhows – all from recycled plastic lumber instead of wood.  

In 2023, The Flipflopi team met UK Monarch King Charles whilst on a visit to Kenya, presenting him with an elegant traditional Swahili throne made entirely from recycled beach plastic.  It made headlines around the world. 

To date Flipflopi activity has principally taken place within Kenya, and to a lesser extent, in neighbouring countries Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda.  In 2025 we are turning our attention to globally scaling the many valuable lessons we have learned about how to create a circular economy for plastic waste.

In 2025 we begin our most ambitious campaign yet – first we will construct a 120 tonne, 24 metre long traditional Lamu Dhow (again, built entirely from recycled plastic) and then we embark on a global expedition that will convene the action we need globally to see a WORLD WITHOUT SINGLE USE PLASTIC.

Folding@home (FAH or F@h) is a distributed computing project for simulating protein dynamics, including the process of protein folding and the movements of proteins implicated in a variety of diseases. It brings together citizen scientists who volunteer to run simulations of protein dynamics on their personal computers and scientific researchers. Insights from these data are helping scientists to better understand biology and providing new opportunities for developing therapeutics.

**Taawon (Welfare Association)** is a **non-profit**, **civic organization** launched in **Geneva** in the year **1983**, upon the initiative of a group of **Palestinian and Arab economists** and intellectuals.

Cuddles Foundation nourishes children in their fight against cancer. Because #Foodheals



**Feed Children. Starve Cancer.**

Every year, approximately 76,000 children in India may develop cancer, with 58% of them being severely malnourished at the time of diagnosis. For these children, nutrition can mean the difference between life and death. Every child deserves a chance at a cure, and we are here to make that happen.

At Cuddles Foundation, we partner with over 40 government and charity cancer hospitals to support children through our FoodHeals program. Our mission is to ensure that children undergoing cancer therapy receive comprehensive nutritional support. This includes access to trained clinical pediatric nutritionists, expert dietary counsel, supplements, hot meals, monthly ration baskets, and caregiver support. Good food helps the medicine work!

This multi-pronged approach tackles a simple but often ignored aspect of a child’s successful recovery from cancer. While undergoing treatment, it is essential that children have freshly prepared, nutritious food in sufficient quantity and don't stay hungry for long periods. The impact of our work is evident. When part of the FoodHeals Program, 82%* of patients improved or maintained their nutritional status, despite cancer therapy like chemotherapy or radiation.

Additionally, 96% of children followed up* on their treatment plan when nutrition was a part of it, demonstrating the program’s effectiveness. Besides the love and affection of our patients, their families, and our supporters, we’ve won some prestigious awards along the way. This includes the National Award for Child Welfare (2015-16), the Akshaya Patra and UN Global Compact Award (2018) and most recently we received the Global CSR & ESG Awards 2024 - Top 10 Best NGOs of the Year (2024).

🍲 Gaza Soup Kitchen: Feeding 10,000 People Daily

As famine tightens its grip and markets collapse, Gaza Soup Kitchen is still boiling pots—feeding 1,000 people every day with dignity and determination.

We were the first soup kitchen in North Gaza to lean on local farmers and forage from nature to keep people alive. When others paused, we adapted. When supplies ran out, we improvised.

Today, we operate across 11 kitchens, run a community clinic, and deliver clean water and hot meals to hospitals—even in the hardest-hit zones.

This is survival work, done by people living through the very crisis they’re responding to.

Wandikweza exists to provide healthcare closer to the people. We work to remove barriers to healthcare for ultra-poor Malawians in remote areas. We do this through Community Health Workers, mobile clinics, Nurses on Bikes, our dedicated Health Centre and plant therapy for depression. At Wandikweza we believe everyone should have sufficient access to high-quality holistic healthcare when they need it.

Wandikweza focuses on eliminating preventable maternal and newborn deaths by making sure women and newborns can access quality care at every stage -  before, during, and after pregnancy until the child is five years old.

For more than 65 years, ITBA - Instituto Tecnólogico de Buenos Aires  has contributed to solving the challenges of humanity through a university education recognized for its excellence, the production of scientific knowledge and international collaboration, and outstanding levels of excellence among its graduates.

ITBA invests in people, in the equipment and infrastructure necessary to be at the forefront of technological progress.

To assist and protect orphans, street children, and children victims of abuse in Egypt, their families and communities.

To support the most vulnerable children in Egypt, through one of the most innovative NGO in Egypt. FACE supports over 3000 children per year and promotes child protection and alternative care best practices in Egypt.

FACE provides services to safeguard children, by addressing their needs and working with their communities to create practical, innovative and sustainable solutions to ensure them a better future. Since 2003, FACE has been running projects in Egypt, with the aim to improve child protection and develop alternative care for children living in institutions, and to reduce the number of children and youths working or living on the streets and reintegrate them into their society.

FACE has been working with orphans and abandoned children since 2003, and the organization runs since 2024 the first National Kafala Center in Egypt in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Solidarity, which aims at receiving all abandoned babies and orphans in Greater Cairo and Alexandria to ensure these babies have a chance to be placed in a Kafala family (local form of adoption/alternative care).                                                                FACE also runs 2 homes for children (males and females) who cannot be placed into Kafala families and who need to be raised and supported toward their social integration. A new aftercare program was created in 2021 to ensure all young people receive adequate support to ensure their social and professional integration after they leave the care of FACE.

Since 2008 FACE also runs a Street Children Program, composed of a large outreach team supporting children on the streets, in detention centers and in the poorest communities and slums through prevention activities. The Program runs a transitional home and case management team working to support children, and their families provide preventive support or to ensure children safe and sustainable reintegration. The program has become a model of good practice and provides support to more than 3500 children and to hundreds families every year.

Both programs include a Training component, to ensure the systematic and ongoing training of all FACE projects teams, to ensure effective children protection and high standards in service provision. The FACE training also works to provide training and technical support to different local organizations, schools, companies, and to local and national child protection public bodies about Child protection, childcare, social work, non-formal education, alternative care and other topics.

Sine 2022, FACE is facing the increasingly difficult economic context in Egypt, with a very high inflation and several devaluation of the local currency in recent years, which have contributed to increase needs for support among the poorest categories of the population, but in the same time have largely affected the organization finances. FACE needs your support to contribute to our work in favor of child protection in Egypt and to help us to continue providing support to the most vulnerable children in Egypt.

Abortion Freedom Fund supports accessible, affordable, evidence-based abortion pills by mail for all. Our mission is to help pregnant people take control of their healthcare and futures by dismantling medicalized control of abortion and encouraging a world where abortion pills are over the counter.

We simplify access to care for patients by funding virtual abortion providers and clinics, individuals accessing telehealth abortions, and reimbursing local funds for telehealth abortion care, allowing them to focus their resources on people seeking procedural abortions in their communities.

In addition to direct funding, we partner with organizations doing research and other activism to increase access to abortions.

Our core aims are:
-Assisting people who are pregnant to take control of their health care and futures
-Dismantling medicalized control of abortion and encouraging a world where abortion pills are over the counter
-Advocating for the full continuum of abortion care from self managed to clinician supported

We are a community-based, non-profit organization that serves the homeless and at-risk populations of the Mid-Peninsula. We establish environments and build relationships where community volunteers can provide food and clothing, as well as referrals for shelter, addiction recovery, and other personal support.

Street Life Ministries (or SLM) began in 2001 at the downtown Menlo Park train station. Today, due to the help of many people, it now serves over 35,000 meals a year, five nights a week, in Menlo Park, Palo Alto and Redwood City. For 20 years SLM gatherings have built a reputation as the one consistent place the homeless can count on. Whether it is a holiday, a cloudy or rainy day, SLM never varies from the set schedule, giving the homeless a stable option throughout the year.

SLM is an established 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a board of directors, and is very different from many “feeding ministries.” It serves a unique role in the way it cares for the homeless and the hungry in San Mateo/Santa Clara Counties. Hot, home cooked meals served in outdoor venues are less threatening for our homeless neighbors, fostering a safe environment for relational connections to develop with the SLM leaders and volunteers. These connections build trust for guiding homeless friends toward healthier decisions, medical assistance, detox, rehab, housing, mentorship and counseling. In addition to food and encouragement, SLM provides clothing, toiletry kits, sleeping bags, medical supplies, temporary shelter, recovery services and job assistance to those in need. 

SLM is also unique because it places its staff and its services “in the streets”, and “in the camps”, where the homeless live. It reaches more homeless people directly in those street locations than traditional professional service agencies. Additionally, no other homeless non-profit in the area provides local residents with the large number (over 6000 hours per year, estimated) of volunteer hours of opportunity to meet directly and be served on a face to face basis as we do. Homeless folks need love, care, trustworthy friends, and reliable, regular support to improve and/or recover. SLM is “in the trenches and on the street” every day, helping our homeless neighbors. SLM’s outreach can be accessed at all hours of the day and night.
