We give small mills everything they need to add vital nutrients into the food that millions of malnourished people eat the most.

Sanku combats hidden hunger and saves lives by giving small mills the tools needed to fortify maize flour, an East African staple. Our mission: Guarantee that every meal consumed by every mother & child contains vital nutrients, forever. 

Worldwide, 8,000 children die every day and 2 billion suffer from preventable illness because their diets lack basic vitamins and minerals. Fortification (adding life-saving micronutrients to processed foods) is the most cost-effective nutrition intervention, but it has failed to reach the 6.5 billion people in developing countries who rely on small, often rural, mills for most of their food.

Sanku developed a technology and business model to enable the small mills that feed the most malnourished people to conveniently and affordably fortify staple grains. Our technology adds precise levels of nutrients into flour during processing and our business model leverages economies of scale to offset any additional costs for millers and their customers, providing Sanku with revenue margins that increase as we scale. We are currently reaching 3 million East Africans with the basic human right of nutritious food and have a plan to reach 100 million this decade, which will prevent millions from death and disease, boost productivity, and save billions of dollars in GDP.  

A donation of ~$1 is enough to give one person access to nutritious food for an entire year, so even a small donation can go a long way in the fight against malnutrition.

Burundi is at the heart of several socio-economic challenges that put 3 million Burundians in need of humanitarian aid in 2017 [1]  alone. This includes women and girls who do not have access to hygienic menstrual management products. It is estimated that 80% of Burundian women cannot afford pads and underwear to use every month when they are on their periods. The cheapest (disposable) pads available on the market cost 2500 BIF (approximately 1.5 US$): this is a lot of money to spend every month for many families, in a country whose GDP per capita is approximately 236.8 US$. As a result, women, and girls' resort to unhygienic and undignified methods to manage their periods, such as used pieces of cloth, pieces of old mattresses or old socks filled with sand.This situation takes a dramatic turn in the school environment, which already suffers from lack of water and the dilapidated conditions of toilets (if they are available) in many schools. In addition to having no adequate environment where female students can live their menstrual period in complete privacy, hygiene conditions increase the risk of infections. This has a serious impact on their attendance of classes and their grades. Many prefer to stay at home instead of going to school and miss an average of four days of class each month. A study conducted by the UNICEF in Burundi in 2016 revealed that only 17.1% of female students could afford the disposable pads available on the market. Furthermore, 70.2% of female students missed school during their periods. 88.3% of school principals and teachers interviewed as part of the study confirmed these numbers. Without resources like textbooks to catch up on lessons, the students find themselves further and further behind in lessons, fail tests, get discouraged and far too often, drop out of school. The consequences of dropping out are devastating early marriages and pregnancies, as well as limited career opportunities. This continues the cycle of poverty for the girls and their families. Founded in 2011 by  Mrs. Grace Françoise NIBIZI , SaCoDé is a Burundian non-profit organization certified equivalent to an American public charity that works tirelessly to promote healthy communities for sustainable development. The Organization implements various projects, namely: promotion and education on sexual and reproductive health, promotion and education on menstrual health and hygiene, promotion of female entrepreneurship, produce and distribution of washable and reusable sanitary pads AGATEKA, promotion of a balanced diet.  As a solution to the problem mentioned above, SaCoDé makes menstrual pads that are reusable, washable and wearable with or without underwear. The pads are branded  AGATEKA , which means "dignity" in Kirundi, because we want all girls and women in the world to manage their menstruation normally with dignity. In honor of Christmas day, help SaCoDé team create DIGNITY for underprivileged school girls who can't afford to buy sanitary pads available on the market. We will use your gift to get resources and materials for making AGATEKA sanitary pads which are washable and reusable, wearable without an underwear. This school year, more than 50.000 Burundian schools girls are in need of AGATEKA pads. Thanks to people like you, to this date SaCoDé has been able to produce and distribute AGATEKA sanitary pads to  more than 255.646 girls across Burundi since 2017. Providing multi-pronged support to 3000 under-privileged children daily. 

For over 7 decades, DCCW has been aspiring to live up to its mission to “give children a childhood and a future” by helping under-privileged children in and around Delhi who face challenges they cannot overcome.  We achieve this through programs in the areas of health, nutrition, pre-school education, vocational training, supervised homework schemes, rehabilitation of special needs children and educational sponsorship.  One of our best-known programs is PALNA, our home for lost and abandoned children, where alongside we run a very successful adoption program. Today, these services reach out to 3000 children daily through our 15 centres and are provided to them virtually free of cost. 

DCCW runs  on donations from corporates, institutions and individuals. 



All our programs are targeted at children from low-income families.



-	PALNA: our home and adoption centre for abandoned, lost and homeless children (one centre; 70-80 children resident at any time) 

-	Palna WeeKids: prepares under-privileged pre-school children for admission into schools (13 centres; 900+  beneficiaries annually)

-	Educational Sponsorship: Provides financial assistance to school-going children ( ~900 beneficiaries annually)

-	Supervised Homework Scheme – helps school-going children with their schoolwork (14 centres; ~300 beneficiaries annually)

-	Vocational Training: Teaches income-generating skills (Computers, Tally, Beauty culture, Tailoring) to adolescent girls, mostly school-dropouts (13 centres ; ~1000 beneficiaries annually) 

-	Bal Chetna – provides day-care and rehabilitation therapies to special needs children to help them achieve their potential (Pre-pandemic 3 centres ~100 beneficiaries; only one centre re-started to date)

The Barefoot College, also known as the Social Work and Research Centre is a community-based grassroots organisation working since 1972 based on the Gandhian concept of reaching the last person. It was founded by Sanjit ‘Bunker’ Roy, to harness the skills and intelligence of rural people and ‘specialists’ people with degrees and formal professional competence, to work together to empower local communities. The SWRC/Barefoot aimed at addressing specifically the issues concerning the marginalised, the exploited and the impoverished rural poor living on less than minimum wages; in practical domains like water, education, solar, health, advocacy and rural livelihoods including handicrafts.

Barefoot has sought to provide the opportunity and the right support for communities to participate in planning, executing, and maintaining their own frameworks for development. These processes have provided the opportunity to the rural poor to lift themselves out of relative poverty with dignity and self- respect. The Barefoot College discussed, defined and consolidated the non-negotiables within its body politic (equality, collective decision-making, decentralisation, self reliance, austerity and openness to learning skills).

Barefoot College has been a place where sustainable ideas and the practical knowledge of the poor have been put into practice through work in education and skill development. This work has, in turn, resulted in large-scale impact in rainwater harvesting, solar electrification, non- formal education, health, conservation, women’s empowerment and culture. Barefoot has shown the potential of giving the rural poor an opportunity and support to develop self-sufficiency. What Barefoot has effectively demonstrated is the sustainability of the combination of traditional knowledge (symbolised by “barefoot”) and demystified modern skills.

There are around 30,000 women in Ethiopia living with devastating childbirth injuries called obstetric fistula, because they don't know help is available. An estimated 1,000 women suffer a new fistula injury every year. Catherine’s trailblazing **Hamlin Model of Care** - today replicated around the world - finds, treats and holistically heals these women, restoring their lives.

Women living with childbirth injuries suffer great trauma. Following obstructed labour, they are left incontinent and usually lose their baby. They are shunned from their community and live hidden not knowing help available.

In a single year, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia treats more than 6,000 patients and perform more than 2,000 surgeries.

We also provide counseling and a range of vocational training to support nearly 1,000 women in their recovery. A woman's healing journey starts the moment she arrives at a Hamlin fistula hospital. She is given a Comfort Package containing a Hamlin blanket that has been lovingly made by a volunteer, hygiene items, a new nightgown and slippers, and a homecoming dress.

These are utter luxuries for the many women who arrive at a Hamlin hospital without shoes, wearing the only stained clothes they own. When they wrap themselves in their Hamlin blanket, they feel the warm embrace of people like you.

Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia's work is centered in Ethiopia, a country with one of the highest fertility and maternal mortality rates in the world. Our vision is simple: To eradicate obstetric fistula. Forever.

For more than six decades, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia has implemented our world-recognized approach to the holistic treatment of women and girls with obstetric fistulas — severe injuries resulting from prolonged, unrelieved and obstructed labor, typically in the absence of skilled birth attendants.

In 93% of cases, the mother suffers not only dramatic tissue damage, but she also loses her new baby. Nerve damage and weakened pelvic muscles make many daily tasks unmanageable. And, women are also often ostracized from their communities – cut off from avenues to leading a full, healthy and happy life.

The Hamlin Model of Care – The World's Leading Approach to Treating Obstetric Fistula

Dr Catherine Hamlin pioneered an approach to treating obstetric fistula, including developing a new surgical technique, that dramatically changes the lives of women and girls — in some cases in no more than an hour.

The Hamlin Model of Care is unique because it is not just about repairing injury, but restoring dignity. Hamlin's Rehabilitation and Reintegration Program at Desta Mender offers counseling, literacy and numeracy classes. Additional programs for vocational and life skills training help women find sustainable employment or establish their own small businesses. Today, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia is staffed by more than 550 Ethiopian medical professionals and five regional hospitals have been established to respond to the significant demand for fistula surgery.

To accelerate change for women in Ethiopia, our Project Zero teams will go from door-to-door, in every Woreda (district) to identify women living with historic fistula cases and organize care and treatment. At the same time, we will strengthen maternal healthcare services, to reduce the incidence of birth injuries, and increase awareness, so women have the tools and knowledge they need to give birth safely. Lasting change for women and girls requires building a workforce of skilled birth attendants. Through our Hamlin College of Midwives, we recruit women from rural communities in Ethiopia to learn the Hamlin Model of Care during a four-year Bachelor of Science in Midwifery program.  The curriculum is fully certified and includes the precondition that students conduct at least 40 deliveries before they graduate. Upon graduation, Hamlin midwives return to their villages – today staffing over 90 rural midwifery clinics in remote areas.
