People for Animals Uttarakhand rescues abused animals, runs a no-cage sanctuary, strengthens policy &promote cruelty-free farming.

**People for Animals Uttarakhand (PFA Uttarakhand)** is a grassroots organisation working to protect animals through rescue, rehabilitation, policy reform, and the promotion of humane farming practices. Our work combines on-ground care with long-term system change.

We run a **no-tie, no-cage sanctuary called the** [Happy Home Sanctuary](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxd6wMQ0xGU) that provides lifelong care to horses, mules, donkeys, cats, goats, sheep, and poultry birds rescued from cruelty, overwork, sacrifice and unsafe situations. A major focus is the welfare of [working equines](https://thebetterindia.com/455821/gauri-maulekhi-animal-welfare-saves-lives-of-equines-on-pilgrimage-routes/) used on tough mountain pilgrimage routes. To expand this work, we are establishing a new **Equine Sanctuary in Jammu** for over 250 rescued equines.

Beyond rescue, we strengthen animal welfare systems across India. Through the [Ahimsa Fellowship](https://ahimsafellowship.org/), we train young professionals to work with government departments, improve enforcement of animal protection laws, and build district-level welfare capacity. We also conduct training for police, judicial officers, and veterinary officials. This year we have launched another program called [Applied Animal Advocacy Certificate Program](https://appliedawa.ahimsafellowship.org/) which is mainly designed for working professionals.

PFA Uttarakhand supports the shift toward **humane, cruelty-free farming** by helping institutions adopt ethical sourcing practices and training farmers in cage-free and high-welfare production systems.

During disasters, we provide emergency food, veterinary care, and on-ground support for animals affected by floods, landslides, and extreme weather.

**Our Mission:** To rescue and rehabilitate animals in distress, ensure long-term protection through compassionate infrastructure, and create lasting change through policy strengthening, education, and ethical farming models.

Tent City Showers is a grassroot non profit delivering hot showers to the homeless community in Columbus Ohio. A fresh haircut provides confidence and a new look. The barber chair is always a great place to make a human connection and talk about what God is doing. We encourage people to sit at our table and eat all the hot dogs they want and take a few with you. A full set of clothes and an essential care kit is provided to each person who showers. 

Tent City Showers has one trailer with 3 showers. All 3 showers run non stop when we go out and the trailer reaches it full potential. We have acquired a full size school bus that will converted into an 8 shower mobile homeless resource center. Each trip out the bus will provide up to 100 showers, 500 hotdogs, and a climate controlled barber shop.

There are around 30,000 women in Ethiopia living with devastating childbirth injuries called obstetric fistula, because they don't know help is available. An estimated 1,000 women suffer a new fistula injury every year. Catherine’s trailblazing **Hamlin Model of Care** - today replicated around the world - finds, treats and holistically heals these women, restoring their lives.

Women living with childbirth injuries suffer great trauma. Following obstructed labour, they are left incontinent and usually lose their baby. They are shunned from their community and live hidden not knowing help available.

In a single year, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia treats more than 6,000 patients and perform more than 2,000 surgeries.

We also provide counseling and a range of vocational training to support nearly 1,000 women in their recovery. A woman's healing journey starts the moment she arrives at a Hamlin fistula hospital. She is given a Comfort Package containing a Hamlin blanket that has been lovingly made by a volunteer, hygiene items, a new nightgown and slippers, and a homecoming dress.

These are utter luxuries for the many women who arrive at a Hamlin hospital without shoes, wearing the only stained clothes they own. When they wrap themselves in their Hamlin blanket, they feel the warm embrace of people like you.

Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia's work is centered in Ethiopia, a country with one of the highest fertility and maternal mortality rates in the world. Our vision is simple: To eradicate obstetric fistula. Forever.

For more than six decades, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia has implemented our world-recognized approach to the holistic treatment of women and girls with obstetric fistulas — severe injuries resulting from prolonged, unrelieved and obstructed labor, typically in the absence of skilled birth attendants.

In 93% of cases, the mother suffers not only dramatic tissue damage, but she also loses her new baby. Nerve damage and weakened pelvic muscles make many daily tasks unmanageable. And, women are also often ostracized from their communities – cut off from avenues to leading a full, healthy and happy life.

The Hamlin Model of Care – The World's Leading Approach to Treating Obstetric Fistula

Dr Catherine Hamlin pioneered an approach to treating obstetric fistula, including developing a new surgical technique, that dramatically changes the lives of women and girls — in some cases in no more than an hour.

The Hamlin Model of Care is unique because it is not just about repairing injury, but restoring dignity. Hamlin's Rehabilitation and Reintegration Program at Desta Mender offers counseling, literacy and numeracy classes. Additional programs for vocational and life skills training help women find sustainable employment or establish their own small businesses. Today, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia is staffed by more than 550 Ethiopian medical professionals and five regional hospitals have been established to respond to the significant demand for fistula surgery.

To accelerate change for women in Ethiopia, our Project Zero teams will go from door-to-door, in every Woreda (district) to identify women living with historic fistula cases and organize care and treatment. At the same time, we will strengthen maternal healthcare services, to reduce the incidence of birth injuries, and increase awareness, so women have the tools and knowledge they need to give birth safely. Lasting change for women and girls requires building a workforce of skilled birth attendants. Through our Hamlin College of Midwives, we recruit women from rural communities in Ethiopia to learn the Hamlin Model of Care during a four-year Bachelor of Science in Midwifery program.  The curriculum is fully certified and includes the precondition that students conduct at least 40 deliveries before they graduate. Upon graduation, Hamlin midwives return to their villages – today staffing over 90 rural midwifery clinics in remote areas.

Zendo Project offers peer-based emotional support at events and provides educational resources to individuals, communities, and organizations. Our aim is to help people navigate complexity with greater resilience, care, and self-awareness. Through grounding, presence, and connection, we reduce potential harms and create space for learning, repair, and deeper relationships with self and others.

Zendo Project: Peer Support and Compassionate Care

Evacuating the wounded and sick at the front since 2014. 
Largest civilian medical volunteer team saving lives for 12 years.

The PDMSh was founded in 2014 to provide medical aid in the areas of the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) and, since May 2018, the Joint Forces Operation (JFO). Before full-scale invasion of Ukraine, our volunteer medics had provided timely and qualified medical care to more than 56,000 patients. We worked at 50 locations in the east of Ukraine, including frontline hospitals, entry-exit control points (EECPs) and temporary deployment points.

Now we face greater challenges due to unprovoked and brutal invasion of our country. Since the first day of this invasion, our dedicated volunteers have been on the frontline in combat areas across the country. They selflessly risk their lives to help both civilians and combatants, the wounded and the sick.

After our active participation in the Kyiv campaign in February-April 2022, where we managed to simultaneously provide 12 ambulances and carry out thousands of trips and medical evacuations from the front line, our focus shifted to Eastern Ukraine. In May 2022, we set up medical stations in the east of Ukraine, including in Bakhmut, Sloviansk, Chasiv Yar, Kostyantynivka, Lyman, Rai Oleksandrivka and Symy (the latter three are still operating).

The big international organizations like International Red Cross (ICRC) or Doctors Without Borders (MSF) are not present due to the extreme and difficult conditions.  We are however just a volunteer organization, and we need your support now more than ever.  While working in the most difficult areas in the east of Ukraine from May 2022 to January 2026, Pirogov First Volunteer Mobile Hospital volunteers provided medical assistance to more than 53 586 patients. 

Throughout its operation, PDMSh has provided assistance to 109 586 patients.

The active areas of development of PFVMH are increasing the number of medical teams and ambulances that will work as emergency units for medical evacuations from the most difficult areas in the east. The expansion of the voluntary membership of the PFVMH will require more funds to ensure the accommodation and security of the personnel and their ability to treat wondered, which will allow us to save even more lives.

Among other necessities, there are the capability of the fast and complete maintenance of vehicles, availability of sufficient amounts of fuel, medical products, and medicines, as well as proper conditions for accommodation of volunteers and ensuring their protection.

As a leader in malaria control and elimination, our work focuses on interventions such as seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC), malaria vaccines, disease surveillance, and integrated child health services. We work in collaboration with governments, communities, and health systems to improve access to essential healthcare and strengthen delivery of services in underserved and hard-to-reach areas.

As a leader in interventions such as chemoprevention and vector control, we rely on evidence and our expertise to deliver established interventions, influence other effective interventions and guide new strategies to reduce the burden of malaria, pneumonia, dengue, malnutrition and diarrhea. We work with communities and all levels of the health system to improve access to and demand for primary healthcare services and overall quality of care.

Our tailored interventions seek to improve equity by providing quality, affordable health services to marginalized populations (particularly women and girls and those living in hard-to-reach areas). To ensure barriers to achieving UHC are addressed and to encourage sustainability, we work closely with governments to integrate our programs within existing health systems and structures in the countries in which we work.

We promote disease surveillance as a core intervention to engage communities to improve the quality and accessibility of routine health information by using digital tools and approaches that strengthen the linkages between case-level data and national health information systems. We combine capacity development at community level with the use of innovative tools and platforms to enhance local capabilities to interpret and use these data most effectively.
