As famine tightens its grip and markets collapse, Gaza Soup Kitchen is still boiling pots—feeding 1,000 people every day with dignity and determination.

We were the first soup kitchen in North Gaza to lean on local farmers and forage from nature to keep people alive. When others paused, we adapted. When supplies ran out, we improvised.

We develop community-led, circular solutions to end plastic pollution in remote coastal areas, grounded in local heritage.

We are an East African circular economy movement that in 2018 built the world’s first 100% recycled plastic sailing dhow.  Built from 10 tonnes of beach plastic, it was covered in 30,000 pieces of discarded flipflops collected from Kenyas beaches, hence its name 'The Flipflopi'. 

We employ a “full-systems” approach to beating plastic pollution through 

(1) education and awareness campaigns, 

(2) waste-plastic innovation rooted in heritage, and 

(3) influencing legislative change to ban single-use plastics.

In 2020 Flipflopi Co-founder was awarded Kenya’s highest civilian honour for his contribution to preserving Kenya's Swahili culture and his environmental campaigning.  

In 2022, Flipflopi was awarded the FCDO’s prestigious SMEP Grant to tackle marine ecosystem health challenges which led to the creation of an innovative community-centered programme that is ‘closing the loop’ on waste plastic in the Lamu Archipelago (on the coast of northern Kenya) by combining indigenous knowledge of boatbuilding with modern innovation.  In a 24 month perirod we have collected 288 tonnes of plastic from the enviroment within the Lamu region. 

In 2022 we set up a Heritage Boat Building centre that runs pioneering classes teaching Dhow building and traditional craftsmanship to mixed gender classes of young people from Lamu County.  Students on these 12 week courses have built everything from ornately carved traditional Lamu chairs to Swahili Dhows – all from recycled plastic lumber instead of wood.  

In 2023, The Flipflopi team met UK Monarch King Charles whilst on a visit to Kenya, presenting him with an elegant traditional Swahili throne made entirely from recycled beach plastic.  It made headlines around the world. 

To date Flipflopi activity has principally taken place within Kenya, and to a lesser extent, in neighbouring countries Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda.  In 2025 we are turning our attention to globally scaling the many valuable lessons we have learned about how to create a circular economy for plastic waste.

In 2025 we begin our most ambitious campaign yet – first we will construct a 120 tonne, 24 metre long traditional Lamu Dhow (again, built entirely from recycled plastic) and then we embark on a global expedition that will convene the action we need globally to see a WORLD WITHOUT SINGLE USE PLASTIC.

**Who is Iya Tahirah?**

Iya Tahirah AbuBakr, born River Lee Adams, was raised in Pocahontas, Mississippi as the eldest of seven children in a family of sharecroppers who turned hardship into strength and purpose. At seventeen, she left Mississippi for New Orleans, and in her early twenties moved to New York City, where her community activism within the Black Liberation Movement laid the foundation for a lifelong path of service as a social worker and community leader.

Her spiritual journey led to initiation into **Ifa** by **Ifa Priestess Yemọja**, grounding her in the ancestral Yoruba traditions of West Africa. A graduate of Social and Cultural Anthropology from IU Indianapolis, and trained in shamanism with **Malidoma Somé**, she emerged as Iya Tahirah AbuBakr—medicine woman, diviner, shamanic practitioner, and founder and co-founder of the St. Croix Council of Elders.

Iya Tahirah has dedicated her life to the service of humanity, with a deep commitment to nurturing youth and leaving the Earth better than she found it. Supporting Iya Tahirah ensures her wisdom, resilience, and sacred legacy continue to uplift future generations.

 **What is going on with her health?**

On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Iya Tahirah was found alone in her home and rushed to the hospital, having suffered physical injury from a fall that was a result of an [ischemic stroke.](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/24208-ischemic-stroke-clots) 

At first, the prognosis was dark (she only had days to live). We believe now that this was a combination of her condition (we estimate 36 hours between the stroke and when she was found), and the doctor’s inability to see beyond the facts (age, race) and into the truth. Iya Tahirah has shown that she is cogent, lucid, and generally aware of what is going on. She has begun the long walk to recovery and she needs our support, now.

Reach A Hand Uganda (RAHU) is a youth-centered nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young people with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to make informed life choices. Founded in 2011, RAHU focuses primarily on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), ensuring that young people across Uganda have access to accurate information and quality services.

Our SRHR work includes HIV/AIDs awareness and prevention, information and access to modern contraception, livelihoods, safer sex options, and comprehensive life skills development. At the heart of our mission is the drive to challenge negative social norms that limit young people’s access to quality SRHR resources and services.

We operate in more than 53 districts across Uganda, engaging youth ages 10–19 and 20–30, who are faced with SRHR challenges. We partner with young people living with HIV, refugees, youth whom are in- and out-of-school, and those living with disabilities. We also work closely with men—as users and advocates of family planning, champions, and satisfied users a—recognizing their critical influence on reproductive health decisions within families and communities.

A cornerstone of our impact is our national network of **836+ trained peer educators**, who lead community mobilization, SRHR information sharing, and have a significant impact on service uptake. Their efforts are supported by interpersonal communication agents who promote male involvement in family planning, including informed uptake of vasectomy.

Our digital communications hub, **SautiPlus**, amplifies RAHU’s work by creating and disseminating youth-friendly SRHR content to millions of young people and the adults who influence them—parents, teachers, cultural leaders, policymakers, and more.

Taimaka has reimagined pediatric malnutrition treatment to make it **more cost-effective and scalable**. We’ve developed a malnutrition treatment model that is:

2. Leverages digitally-enabled community health workers (CHWs) to deliver care to the most vulnerable communities. 

So far, we’ve used our model to treat 6,000+ children out of existing government hospitals in northeastern Nigeria with world-class recovery rates of 95%+. Our mission is to help pregnant people take control of their healthcare and futures by dismantling medicalized control of abortion and encouraging a world where abortion pills are over the counter.

We simplify access to care for patients by funding virtual abortion providers and clinics, individuals accessing telehealth abortions, and reimbursing local funds for telehealth abortion care, allowing them to focus their resources on people seeking procedural abortions in their communities.

In addition to direct funding, we partner with organizations doing research and other activism to increase access to abortions.

Founded to research and implement regenerative medical therapies for circumcised males.

Foregen’s goal is to heal the physical detriment that that is inherent to circumcision, including the functional and sensory losses to the penis when circumcised, as well as the potential for psychological damage for those on whom such surgery was performed. Fortunately, regenerative medical techniques offer great potential to regrow human tissue, especially dermal tissue, lost in prior trauma. However, those techniques have not yet been applied to those who have been circumcised and no longer wish to be.  After dismissing many unsatisfactory proposals from research institutions, we decided to conduct our own research and human clinical trials. With the help of dedicated scientists, we will apply known regenerative techniques to the foreskin in order to restore normal penile function and sensitivity.  Foregen is not an activist organization and we have no legislative or political agenda; Foregen is a pioneering research organization dedicated to creating options for circumcised men. Foregen, although unique, is a great example of an organization that regenerative medicine was made for, as it applies to over one billion people - circumcised males and their partners! Since Foregen’s foundation, countless men have expressed great delight that an organization such as this finally exists, something for which they have been searching for years.

Despite all the progress over the last 15 years, the work has only taken place on 30% of GreenEarth's endowed land. and we have ways to go!  We can plant 40,000 more trees on our Phase 1 development of 32 hectares plus the need to build access roads, pathways and hiking trails, before we hop on over to our Phase 2 development of 75 hectares.   We can continue to scale up our livelihoods in organic agriculture by continuing to build the density of our raw materials  in hardwoods, fruit-bearing trees and ornamental plants, if we were to dream big and be a global purveyor of certified-organic products, which will bring in a tremendous amount of livelihood for the rural poor in our catchment community.  

Our **MISSION** is to preserve the environment, to adhere to sound and sustainable organic agricultural practices and to help in the alleviation of poverty through livelihood, education and community development.

It is our **VISION** to build a model eco-farming community on our land donation, skillfully master planned to allow for future-allocated areas for forests, schools, libraries, parks, marketplaces, sports and recreational facilities, community training centers, to name a few, all for the benefit of indigent farming families who have decided to hinge their life’s hopes for a brighter future on our mission and programs.

GreenEarth Heritage Foundation

We work in remote Indonesian villages to end childhood stunting by training community health workers.

Stunting is the most heartbreaking, yet avoidable crisis facing Indonesia today. Every day 5,000 children are born in Indonesia, and more than 30% of those children will lose up to 10 IQ points as a result of stunting and chronic malnutrition. The 1000 Days Fund was created as a bold approach to invent and test innovative, cost-effective solutions to help end stunting—a condition that affects 1 in 3 Indonesian children. Our mission is to end stunting by 2030. In our quest to improve maternal and newborn health, we partner with governments to build capacity, work closely with communities to deliver tools, train CHWs and advocate for national and grassroots policy change to address the root causes. Our growth charts are cost-effective, evidence-based, and endorsed by the Ministry of Health.

The 1000 Days Fund (legally known as "Yayasan Seribu Cita Bangsa") launched in 2019 as a bold approach to invent, test, and apply innovative, cost-effective solutions to help end stunting in Indonesia. The 1000 Days Fund is relentlessly committed to improving maternal and newborn health outcomes for the poor and marginalized. We partner with local governments to build the capacity of frontline health workers in impoverished communities to deliver high-quality maternal and newborn health care, address the root causes of stunting, and improve data aimed at evidence, advocacy, and policy change.

We are poised for scale. 

Meanwhile, our obsession with marrying tech and traditional in-home behavior change allows us to make data-driven decisions on a daily basis. With the help of 31 full-time staff and 11 Quality Assurance Coordinators collecting data across more than 100 sub-districts, we unlock the power of data with interactive dashboards and reports that inspire smarter decisions. Against this backdrop, our in-house team of senior management and health economists undertake systematic and rigorous examination of data to address issues such as ROI and opportunity costs.

Yayasan Seribu Cita Bangsa

We provide menstrual products to those experiencing homelessness and low-income disparity. 

No one should have to worry about accessing menstrual products when they are needed.  Helping Women Period provides menstrual products (mostly disposable pads & tampons, but sustainable products when available) to those who need them; we also offer menstrual health workshops, advocacy (let's eliminate period stigma!), and peace of mind.   Since we work with a local janitorial supplier, we can provide one person's menstrual needs for an entire year for only $35.

We address food insecurity, social isolation, loneliness among Asian Elders living in under-resourced & underinvested communities.

Concerning data reveals that 23% of Asian New Yorkers live in poverty, significantly higher than the citywide average of 16% of all New Yorkers. And a staggering 28% of Asian American older adults 65+ live in poverty. As the American Bar Association reveals, Asian elders, especially those from immigrant backgrounds, endure more social isolation and mental health struggles than their peers due to linguistics, financial, and cultural barriers. These factors combined significantly impact the mental and emotional well-being of Asian American older adults in a city where depression and suicide among older adult immigrants are on the rise.

**Heart of Dinner addresses these critical community needs by home-delivering to Elders with Heart of Dinner's signature nourishing care packages of culturally thoughtful and nutrient-dense food, bundled inside lovingly hand-illustrated bags, attached with uplifting handwritten notes in the Elder's native language.**

**A Note from Our Founders about Heart of Dinner & Our Evolution from 2020-2024:**

Dear Cherished Supporter,

Thank you for taking a moment to connect with our mission. We are so grateful for the opportunity to share our journey with you—a journey born from a deep, instinctive need to care for our Elders. **In March 2020, at the onset of the global pandemic, we leapt into action to support our Asian American elder community, who were facing devastating food insecurity, isolation, and loneliness.**

While many believe the urgency that defined the pandemic has passed, **the reality for our Elders remains critical. Even now, 1 in 3 Asian American older adults live below the poverty line.** These challenges are not new. For decades, this community has been overlooked, its struggles masked by the harmful “model minority” myth, which conceals the deep inequities faced by Asian American Elders. This, combined with language barriers, technology gaps, and economic hardship, means that many continue to lack access to the resources and care they deserve.

Out of a guttural instinct to protect and uplift our Elders, we **transformed our 300 square-foot apartment on the cusp of Chinatown and the Lower East Side into a sanctuary of cultural resonance and care.** We hyperfocused on those in the most critical state, providing emergency food relief and addressing their emotional needs through handwritten notes in their native languages, making sure our Elders felt seen, valued, and dignified.

**These care packages are more than just food—they are a lifeline.** Filled with culturally meaningful lunchboxes and fresh groceries beloved in Asian immigrant households like bok choy, rice, mung beans (and more!), all lovingly bundled inside decorated bags, attached with notes of love & joy that deliver warmth, connection, and belonging.

As our work evolved beyond emergency relief, we **built Heart of Dinner into a nonprofit focused on sustainable care.** Thanks to our incredible community of donors, partners, volunteers, and small team of staff, we have transformed into a **501(c)(3) public charity that continues to nourish and uplift our Elders, week after week.**

By Summer 2024, **we have delivered over 200,000 meals to beloved Elders living in significantly under-resourced and underinvested communities across New York City.** And our work is far from over. The challenges our Elders face didn’t begin with the pandemic, and they certainly won’t end with it. **These hardships are rooted in long-standing societal and governmental neglect, where policies and systems have historically overlooked the needs of this community.**

**Looking forward, we have plans to build Heart of Dinner's own delivery infrastructure with a fleet of electric vehicles, hire a dedicated team of drivers trained in our protocols—which emphasize cultural respect and thoughtful care when serving our Elders—and we aim to increase our care package distribution by 25%.** **These efforts will build upon our ongoing commitment to delivering care packages to our Elders and existing beneficiaries with the same high level of deep care and compassion.**

**Behind the scenes, we are strengthening systems to support Heart of Dinner’s sustainable growth,** so that we can continue to serve with deep care for years to come. **With these steps, we aim to cover all five boroughs of NYC—and even dream of extending our love and care to California.**
