Project Title: The Post Beryl Recovery of the Levera Ramsar Protected Area

Implementing Organisation: St. Patrick’s Environment and Community Tourism Organisation (SPECTO)

Background

Following the passage of Hurricane Beryl, a Category 4 hurricane, on July 1st and 2nd, 2024, Grenada’s northeastern parish of St. Patrick’s suffered significant structural, physical, socioeconomic and nature loss impacts.

The Levera Pond Protected Area (LPPA) located at the northeastern most end of the island within the parish of St Patrick’s was severely impacted, losing almost 90% of tree coverage surrounding its unique and biodiverse wetland ecosystem, including impacts of wind destruction and flooding on built infrastructure and natural mangrove systems as well as eutrophication and pollution related impacts on its indigenous lake ecosystem.

Outputs

  1. Extended Clean up and Restoration of Wetlands
  2. Reconstruct Levera Pond Boardwalk to support improved access to the lake and income generating livelihoods activities such as nature and kayaking tours.

GSDTF funds long-term conservation and protected area management in Grenada to support sustainable development.
