At just 45 days old, two maned wolf pups were found orphaned in the Iberá wetlands of northern Argentina. Locals named them Kuarahy and Jasy — Sun and Moon — symbols of resilience in one of the region’s most threatened ecosystems.
Their journey to survival began when they arrived at the Temaikèn Species Recovery Center (CRET), one of Argentina’s leading facilities for wildlife rehabilitation. CRET is an isolated campus of 18 Hectares home to critically endangered species including maned wolves, marsh deer and Andean condors. Here, a specialized team protects them from human contact, provides veterinary care, and prepares them to return to their natural habitat. Every step — from nutrition to behavior monitoring — follows strict protocols refined over more than two decades of conservation work.
Kuarahy and Jasy are growing stronger each day: curious Jasy explores with confidence, while calm Kuarahy follows closely behind. When the time comes, both will be released with GPS collars so our team can track their progress and use the data to improve conservation strategies for the entire species.
The maned wolf is increasingly threatened by habitat loss, road collisions, and illegal capture. Fundación Temaikèn has long been a key actor in reversing this trend — combining science, fieldwork, and deep local partnerships to protect South America’s most unique canid.
