Right now, talented students are being held back — not by ability, but by financial barriers.

You can change that today.

With your support, the Kurt‑Hahn‑Foundation provides scholarships that open the doors to Schule Schloss Salem — where young people grow into confident leaders, discover their strengths, and shape their future.

The Kurt-Hahn-Foundation

When Kurt Hahn co-founded Schule Schloss Salem in 1920, he insisted on one non-negotiable principle: financial circumstances should not stand between a gifted young person and a transformative education. More than a century later, the Kurt-Hahn-Foundation exists to honor that promise.

What We Do

The Kurt-Hahn-Foundation provides scholarships to exceptionally talented students at Schule Schloss Salem, one of Germany's most renowned boarding schools, located on the shores of Lake Constance in southern Germany. Every year, around 100 students attend Salem on full or partial scholarships — young people who otherwise could not access this education with regard to their families' financial background.

At Salem, students don't just study — they grow. Beyond fundamental academics at a state-recognized Gymnasium, students engage in hands-on projects, the arts, athletics, and community service. They learn to lead, to take responsibility, and to think beyond themselves. Salem's philosophy is simple but radical: a truly successful school should mirror the full diversity of society — not just its wealthiest families.

Who Was Kurt Hahn?

Kurt Hahn (1886–1974) was one of the most influential educators of the 20th century — and Americans may know his legacy better than they realize. After fleeing Nazi Germany, Hahn founded Gordonstoun in Scotland, and later was the driving force behind the creation of Outward Bound, the experiential education movement that has touched millions of lives across the United States and around the world. His belief was simple and enduring: challenge young people, give them real responsibility, and they will surprise you.

In 1920, together with Prince Max of Baden and the reputed pedagog Karl Reinhardt, Hahn founded Schule Schloss Salem in Germany. From the very beginning, he wanted to ensure that scholarships would keep Salem's doors open to students of all backgrounds — a goal the Kurt-Hahn-Foundation continues today.

Why Your Gift Matters

Scholarships don't just change individual lives — they change what a school is. When Salem's student body reflects all of society, every student benefits: from different perspectives, different experiences, and the individual understanding of Kurt Hahn’s motivational approach „Plus est en vous.“ (There is more in you).

Your donation to the Kurt-Hahn-Foundation directly funds scholarships for gifted students who deserve a Salem education — and whose presence makes Salem better for everyone.

Please help us to keep Kurt Hahn's promise alive.

Your gift doesn’t just fund education. It unlocks potential, creates opportunity, and changes a life forever.
