CORREFOC - Burning Man 26 Honoraria Project

Correfoc is a large-scale wooden sculpture and performative installation by Miguel Arraiz and Spanish National Design Award laureate Dani Nebot, bringing the fire traditions of Valencia to the Nevada desert at Burning Man.

Inspired by the Mediterranean correfoc, where figures known as dimonis move through fire, the project reinterprets this ritual within the radical, ephemeral landscape of Black Rock City. The piece takes the form of a towering anthropomorphic structure, derived from Nebot’s ongoing exploration of the face as absence, suggestion, and perception. By day, it stands as a graphic silhouette against the desert; by night, it is activated through light, fire, and choreography.

Surrounded by fire dancers and performers, the installation becomes a space for gathering, an encounter between Valencian festivity and the performative culture of Burning Man. Rather than a fixed spectacle, Correfoc is conceived as a meeting point for the fire community at the festival: a place where dancers, artists, and participants come together around a shared language of movement, rhythm, and flame.

The piece will host spontaneous and organized choreographies throughout the week, bringing together fire performers from across Burning Man. Before its burning, a final collective performance will take place, activating the structure one last time.

Correfoc is conceived to be burned. In doing so, it reinforces fire as a shared element of gathering and community, connecting traditions from both sides of the Atlantic. The burning is not only an ending, but a continuation of that collective energy, bringing together different fire cultures in a single moment of transformation.
