Preserve the cave mining elephants and support the local people of Mt Elgon, a massive extinct volcano on the Kenya-Uganda border.

Mount Elgon is a massive extinct volcano on the Kenya-Uganda border in East Africa. It is believed to have risen from the surrounding Africa plains in a period of intense regional volcanic activity 24 million years ago, probably forming the highest mountain in Africa at the time. It is now quiet and has eroded down to 4,321 meters at its highest peak, Wagagai in Uganda. However, at approximately 80 km north to south and 50 km east to west, it is still huge and is said, measured by its footprint, to be the largest free-standing volcano in the world. 

The cultural heritage, landscape and ecology of Mount Elgon are under threat with serious consequences for people both locally and regionally.  This includes Mount Elgon's elephants that go deep underground to mine salt. There are many factors driving this, a key one being deforestation which impacts on the hydrology of the mountain and results in soil erosion, the loss of biodiversity and human-wildlife conflict. This is exacerbated by a fragile economic environment of low security and opportunity. Mount Elgon's people and its rich biodiversity are largely being left behind in comparison with many areas of East Africa. 

The aim of the Mount Elgon Foundation is to seek viable long-term measures that will help mitigate the challenges faced by Mount Elgon. More specifically, it wishes to: 
• reduce human-elephant conflict, protecting people, their livelihoods and the elephants; 
• prevent deforestation and promote reforestation; 
• promote further recording and preservation of local cultural heritage, and 
• provide alternative environmentally and culturally sensitive economic opportunities. 

The Foundation and its trustees currently fund or have funded the East African Wild Life Society - Mount Elgon Elephant Project (EAWLS-MEEP), cultural heritage research and community livelihood / forestry related projects. To date, the projects supported are located on the Kenya side of Mount Elgon. We aim to also fund partners who work in Uganda or who are Kenya-based and collaborate on a trans-boundary basis with others in Uganda.

Goonj, founded in 1999 by Magsaysay award winner Mr. Anshu Gupta, works on poverty alleviation, rural development, and disaster relief & rehab, by using the cities’ discards as fuel for wide-spread development work across villages in India, creating a barter between two new currencies - the urban underutilized material, and, the efforts of rural communities who work on the neglected issues around water, sanitation, agriculture, education, local infrastructure, access, etc. Working with a strong network of 600+ grassroots partners, in the last 8 years (2014-2022), they have reached out to more than 12 million people, facilitated 55,000+ development activities, and channelized more than 45 million kgs of material across 31 states & UTs of India.

Wild Animal Initiative

We develop community-led, circular solutions to end plastic pollution in remote coastal areas, grounded in local heritage.

We are an East African circular economy movement that in 2018 built the world’s first 100% recycled plastic sailing dhow.  Built from 10 tonnes of beach plastic, it was covered in 30,000 pieces of discarded flipflops collected from Kenyas beaches, hence its name 'The Flipflopi'. 

We employ a “full-systems” approach to beating plastic pollution through 

(1) education and awareness campaigns, 

(2) waste-plastic innovation rooted in heritage, and 

(3) influencing legislative change to ban single-use plastics.

In 2020 Flipflopi Co-founder was awarded Kenya’s highest civilian honour for his contribution to preserving Kenya's Swahili culture and his environmental campaigning.  

In 2022, Flipflopi was awarded the FCDO’s prestigious SMEP Grant to tackle marine ecosystem health challenges which led to the creation of an innovative community-centered programme that is ‘closing the loop’ on waste plastic in the Lamu Archipelago (on the coast of northern Kenya) by combining indigenous knowledge of boatbuilding with modern innovation.  In a 24 month perirod we have collected 288 tonnes of plastic from the enviroment within the Lamu region. 

In 2022 we set up a Heritage Boat Building centre that runs pioneering classes teaching Dhow building and traditional craftsmanship to mixed gender classes of young people from Lamu County.  Students on these 12 week courses have built everything from ornately carved traditional Lamu chairs to Swahili Dhows – all from recycled plastic lumber instead of wood.  

In 2023, The Flipflopi team met UK Monarch King Charles whilst on a visit to Kenya, presenting him with an elegant traditional Swahili throne made entirely from recycled beach plastic.  It made headlines around the world. 

To date Flipflopi activity has principally taken place within Kenya, and to a lesser extent, in neighbouring countries Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda.  In 2025 we are turning our attention to globally scaling the many valuable lessons we have learned about how to create a circular economy for plastic waste.

In 2025 we begin our most ambitious campaign yet – first we will construct a 120 tonne, 24 metre long traditional Lamu Dhow (again, built entirely from recycled plastic) and then we embark on a global expedition that will convene the action we need globally to see a WORLD WITHOUT SINGLE USE PLASTIC.

Listening to feedbacks, understanding what has worked out and what has not, adjusting to the circumstances, and always improving. Whenever possible, we also seek to collect this type of feedback within our own team, where there is no power hierarchy, only different opinions and a great common goal.

Respect: there is no listening to people without respect. We assume everyone has a valuable viewpoint and an in-depth understanding of his/her own reality. We respect differences among cultures, regions, and biomes in order to maximize the impact of our support. We valorize and stimulate the protagonist place of each individual in the socio-environmental transformational process, as we believe that true change comes from the rank and file.

Trust: we trust the working capacity of each individual and each small group we support. We understand Casa Fund as a transitional space, not as a centralizing unit. We are a safe haven, we comfort the pain and uncertainties, ensuring the means to solutions, maximizing actions and opening pathways, but we are not the ones to carry out the projects.

Union: The sentence “union is strength” may sound like a cliché, but it is a motto for us. We aggregate and mobilize. The more people share our dreams of transformation, the greater will be our collective power.

Connection and collaboration: we exist to establish connections and promote collaboration. This does not mean we have to be always present or directly involved in all actions. For us, promoting joint work between two or more transformational agents is already super powerful! This way we manage to multiply our actions and actually have a significant impact on the world.

Friends of Stewart Park (FSP) works in partnership with the City of Ithaca, the Wharton Studio Museum, and local community members and organizations to restore Stewart Park’s historic buildings, upgrade park facilities, and support enhanced maintenance. Our work ensures that Stewart Park remains a place where everyone can enjoy the natural beauty of the park; to play, exercise, or celebrate while feeling welcome, accessible, comfortable and safe. FSP achieves this by planning, designing, implementing, and fundraising for a variety of projects that are designed to enhance accessibility and inclusion, encourage a diversity of users, increase biodiversity, and increase sustainability. Projects include building a new inclusive playground, splash pad and bathroom, restoring historic buildings and structures, improving the historic carousel, creating wayfinding and interpretive signage for the park, organizing volunteers, planting and maintaining gardens and much more.

Since 1996, Amazon Watch has defended the Amazon rainforest and our climate in solidarity with Indigenous peoples. Long-term, trusted partnerships with Indigenous peoples — the best stewards of the rainforest — are the foundation for Amazon Watch’s campaigns for climate justice, corporate accountability, and the permanent protection of the rainforest.

The Amazon is home to more than 511 distinct Indigenous peoples. As our planet’s largest tropical rainforest, it stabilizes our global climate and an immense amount of Earth’s biodiversity and flowing freshwater can be found there. This vital ecosystem and the Indigenous peoples who have stewarded it for centuries face grave threats from deforestation, resource extraction, land grabs, and destructive development projects. The Amazon is facing a tipping point and won't be able to sustain itself as a rainforest if we remain on our current path of destruction.

To move to a turning point, Amazon Watch is carrying out campaigns in partnership with Indigenous peoples to secure Indigenous rights to ancestral territories, halt oil drilling and mining in the biome, and mobilize solidarity funds directly to Amazonian peoples at their request. Their work combines on-the-ground legal, advocacy, and communications expertise and long-term trusted partnerships with Indigenous peoples and organizations.

🌳Amazon Watch’s Amazon Defenders Fund (ADF) provides direct solidarity funding to Amazonian peoples and organizations free of bureaucratic barriers. The ADF supports Indigenous-led initiatives including community organizing, women’s leadership, communal economies, protection of Earth Defenders at risk for resisting destructive development, and crisis response including to wildfires and oil spills. SPECIES RECOVERY
The EWT has achieved remarkable gains for many species, where downward trends in the local populations of Wattled and Grey Crowned Cranes, Piggersgill’s Frogs, the Amathole Toad, and the Riverine Rabbit have joined the Cheetah as species on a pathway to recovery. Critically Endangered
Wattled Cranes are increasing in number, now estimated at some 320 birds nationally, up 60% from their lowest numbers. The EWT has also helped reverse the decline of Endangered Grey Crowned Cranes, while Blue Crane numbers have increased from an estimated 25,500 birds nationally in 2007 to some 30,000 birds today.
SPACE FOR SPECIES
Through our range expansion work, we have secured and protected safe spaces for multiple species to thrive and we have reintroduced many threatened species back into secure and suitable landscapes. Safe space for African Wild Dogs has increased to over 1.4 million ha throughout southern Africa and their numbers and generic health have followed suit. Safe space for Cheetahs and their numbers have also increased from 217 Cheetahs on 41 reserves in South Africa in 2011, to 470 Cheetahs on 65 reserves covering over two million hectares across southern Africa.

SAFEGUARDING OUR SPECIES
To protect threatened species, we monitor them and work with partners, businesses, landowners, and communities to reduce the threats they face. We are innovating to achieve bigger impacts, as evident in our drone project’s expansion to use drones to mark power lines - reducing bird strikes safely and affordably and monitor Southern Right Whales in a way that wasn’t possible before. We continue to explore the use of eDNA to identify the presence of elusive and potentially extinct species, such as
Van Zyl’s and De Winton’s Golden Moles, so that action can be taken to save the last of their habitats.

Our pioneering Eye in the Sky carcass and wildlife poisoning detection project has already saved thousands of animals from secondary poisoning as a result of its efficient and effective success and our quick response times. The project uses the movements and behavior patterns of GPS-tracked vultures to remotely detect potential poisoning events and respond to these rapidly, alerting rangers on the ground and preventing further loss of wildlife to poisoning. We also contribute to preventing wildlife crime through the deployment of Conservation K9s to detect wildlife contraband and track poachers. These dogs help us to protect species, including rhinos, elephants, and pangolins.

Protec􀆟ng and conserving natural places is one of the most important strategies for comba􀆫ng the effects of
biodiversity loss and climate change. The EWT conserves habitats by reducing habitat loss and improving the
ecological integrity of threatened ecosystems through rehabilita􀆟on, restora􀆟on, and sustainable land
management. Many of the EWT’s programmes are involved in habitat conservation, but two are dedicated to protecting specific habitats.

COLLABORATING FOR CONSERVATION
An effective vehicle for conserving habitats is the formal protection of land through Biodiversity Stewardship. We work with private and community landowners to legally declare their land as protected or help them to manage it sustainably and without damage to sensitive species and ecosystems.
The EWT was instrumental in the development of Biodiversity Stewardship, having facilitated the workshops which led to its establishment, and subsequently, the EWT has declared 185 properties (over 139,000 ha) as protected areas in the last
ten years and is currently in the process of securing a further 130,000 hectares for threatened species conservation across South Africa. This includes proper􀆟es in one of the region’s most important centres of endemism: the Soutpansberg Mountain Range. Easily recognized for our work to safeguard charisma􀆟c species like the Wild Dog and Cheetah, the EWT also played a key role in preventing the extinction of the Brenton Blue Butterfly by establishing a dedicated reserve for this endemic insect.  Other critical habitats have been protected to prevent the extinction of many smaller, lesser-known species, including rep􀆟les, amphibians, butterflies, golden moles, and threatened plants.

CARBON FOR CONSERVATION
After establishing the feasibility of carbon trading in South Africa’s grasslands and recognizing the potential benefits for farmers and grassland and wetland management, the EWT the EWT initiated the first carbon offsetting contracts with private landowners in South Africa, in the Drakensberg.
When landowners agree to conserve and manage their land to allow for the verifiable sequestration of carbon in the soil, the carbon can be converted into carbon credits. Liable ensures, usually big carbon emitters, can purchase up to 10% of their carbon as carbon credits to reduce their tax liability in South Africa. These purchases create a long-term revenue stream for farmers and conservation organizations to support conservation efforts and protect important habitats through improved land-use management.

maintain our rich natural and cultural heritage. Through two of its programmes, the EWT implements
innovative strategies that incorporate the needs of people and the environment to ensure that people
benefit from the more sustainable use of natural resources.
BENEFITTING PEOPLE
CAPACITY FOR CONSERVATION
Working across diverse landscapes such as wetlands,
grasslands, river catchments, savannahs, and mountains, the EWT has embraced the need to support the lives and livelihoods of thousands of people who depend on their local environment, from developing sustainable livelihoods as alternatives to environmentally destructive practices in communities from KwaZulu-Natal to Limpopo, Zambia, and as far as Uganda, to pioneering the implementation of Population, Health and Environment in communities in southern and East Africa to support sustainable communities and empower women. The EWT
promotes and implements the education of school
learners and builds capacity for conservation and
ecotourism in communities across our project areas.

BIODIVERSITY AND BUSINESS
Recognizing the importance of biodiversity to business, the EWT established the National Biodiversity and Business Network (NBBN) in 2013 to work with innovative businesses to identify and manage the risks and opportunities resulting from their interactions with the natural world. Through its Biodiversity Disclosure Project, the NBBN helps companies to understand, measure, and disclose their biodiversity impacts and policies. The NBBN introduced the world’s first standardized accounting
framework, the Biological Diversity Protocol (BDP), which measures a business’ impact on biodiversity and identifies areas of improvement over time.  The EWT’s targeted conservation work has national and global impacts and our achievements contribute to multiple conservation-related frameworks. These include South Africa’s 2nd National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (2015–2025), and the National Biodiversity Assessment which assess the status of, and identify the biodiversity and ecosystem
management priori􀆟es as well as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. 

Arguably, the EWT’s most important global impact is our work toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed by the United Nations. The SDGs are a universal set of goals, targets, and indicators that UN member states should use to frame their agendas and political policies. Ambitious by nature, they are a government-led endeavor that serves to coordinate actions by United Nations agencies, businesses, non-governmental groups, and any other entities working on specific goals. These are
the goals that the EWT contributes to.

The mission of Coalition for Rainforest Nations (www.cfrn.org) is to slow, stop and reverse global deforestation.

The Coalition for Rainforest Nations (CfRN) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering rainforest countries to assume a leadership role in the fight against climate change. Through policy support, capacity building, and direct finance, CfRN incentivizes developing countries to slow, stop, and reverse deforestation through the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+) mechanism. REDD+ is now universally recognized as one of the most immediate mitigation actions that preserves the planet’s rainforests and directly addresses the climate emergency.

CfRN’s Origins and the Promise of REDD+
Inspired by the call of Papua New Guinea’s former Prime Minister, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, to equitably preserve the planet’s rainforests, CfRN’s Executive Director, Kevin Conrad, who grew up in Papua New Guinea, and Managing Director Federica’s Bietta, who is from Italy, lead the Coalition for Rainforest Nations. By advancing REDD+, their aim was to give rainforest nations a voice within international climate negotiations and define rainforests as worth more alive than dead. 

REDD+ was introduced in 2005 at the Eleventh Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) by the newly formed Coalition for Rainforest Nations. Founding nations, Costa Rica and Papua New Guinea, envisioned REDD+ as a way to assign a financial value to forests for the role they play in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and not just as a source of logged timber, agriculture, or grazing lands.  REDD+ (Forestry) is the only sector to enjoy a unique article in the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement (Article 5).  Furthermore, REDD+ preserves forests at the scale and speed needed to keep 1.5 alive – the goal prescribed under the Paris Agreement of limiting temperature rise to 1.5°Celsius. 

The REDD+ mechanism was developed over the years at successive COP meetings, as shown in the timeline below. As a result of CfRN’s leadership, rainforests are now recognized as a critical climate solution under the UNFCCC.  

What We Do
CfRN’s work encompasses three key areas: policy support; capacity building; and direct finance. The collective goal of these programs is to effectively reward countries for the work they do to preserve their forests. The Coalition provides direct policy support during all UNFCCC negotiating sessions and works in-country to help develop conservation policies, laws, and national forest protection plans. CfRN also trains countries’ experts to build the expertise needed to gather data required by the UNFCCC to report forest conservation results. CfRN works to ensure that rainforest countries are compensated for verified emission reductions under REDD+, as promised under the Paris Agreement. 

Policy Support
As a UNFCCC-recognized Negotiating Group, CfRN establishes and advances positions on behalf of its countries – over fifty rainforest nations —at all UNFCCC sessions. In this capacity, CfRN strives to advance the REDD+ mechanism and ensure that climate finance is allocated equitably to rainforest nations. Currently, CfRN is working to ensure that REDD+ is fully represented in the rulebook of the Paris Agreement. 

Technical Training & Capacity Building 
Countries’ results are eligible for financial compensation through REDD+ only after rigorous measurement, reporting and verification data are submitted, reviewed, and deemed to conform to UNFCCC guidelines. REDD+ results are then registered on the UNFCCC REDD+ Information Hub and made available to the public to review in detail. In its capacity building role, CfRN helps countries develop national technical expertise to take stock of their forest resources, create national plans to preserve them, and submit their data to the REDD+ registry at the UNFCCC in a consistent manner with their climate pledges, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) to the Paris Agreement. 

Direct Finance
To date, rainforest countries have not been compensated for the majority of their REDD+ emissions reductions, as promised. Though certain governments including Norway, the U.K., and Germany, have paid bilaterally for some results, this is far from sufficient. CfRN’s finance work helps rainforest nations raise debt funding and receive performance-based compensation. The sale and trading of REDD+ Paris Agreement-compliant carbon credits is a growing source of climate finance. These credits are available for purchase through CfRN’s REDD.plus platform. Over the next few years, our member countries will bring a pipeline of sovereign carbon credits to market representing Paris Agreement-compliant emissions reductions, resulting from member country efforts to keep their rainforests standing.
