For many children in remote areas of Vietnam, summer is a time of risk rather than rest. These programmes give them the support they need to keep learning, growing and believing in their future.
In some of the most remote regions of Vietnam, children from ethnic minority communities face significant challenges in accessing education. During the summer holidays, these challenges become even more pronounced.
Without support, many children lose the progress they made during the school year. They often lack access to educational activities, family support and, in some cases, even regular meals. This “summer gap” deepens existing inequalities and increases the risk of children falling behind or dropping out of school altogether.
Children of the Mekong is committed to supporting these children beyond formal education. Our approach goes further than academic learning by helping children grow into fulfilled, confident and responsible individuals.
Summer programmes are a key part of this mission.
Organised during the school holidays, these programmes provide a safe and stimulating environment where children can:
- continue learning through educational activities
- develop new skills and discover their talents
- build confidence and self-esteem
- engage with others and strengthen their sense of community
These programmes are not simply recreational. They are essential opportunities for children to continue learning, growing and thriving outside the classroom.
They are organised in remote areas where many ethnic minority communities live, including the H’Mong, Jarai, Bahnar, Khmer and Van Kieu peoples. Each programme welcomes between 150 and 200 children on average, including not only sponsored children but also their siblings and others from the surrounding community.
