The Dak Tuk residential home is situated in the north of the Kontum region, in a very rural area populated by poor ethnic minorities. Sisters from the Congregation of the Miraculous Medal (most of whom come from ethnic minority backgrounds) arrived here in 2021. Since 2023, they have been caring for 20 young girls in a dilapidated building. And 30 young people attend as day pupils (evening classes).

The facilities are currently severely inadequate:

* The bedrooms are cramped and damp during the rainy season

* There are no classrooms, no dining hall and no prayer room

* There are not enough toilets and bathrooms. These difficulties have a significant impact on the children’s lives and studies.

What is the proposed solution?

To construct a new building measuring 2238m².

The old building will be retained. An extension of 208 square metres is to be built. The new building will comprise a chapel, a classroom, a dormitory, a room for the Mother Superior, a dining room, a kitchen and toilet facilities.

According to the renovation plan, 30 boarders will sleep there.

This is to provide better accommodation conditions for the girls.

The land on which the old and new buildings stand belongs to the convent and the community.

Since 1958, Children of the Mekong supports children’s education in Southeast Asia.
