Help Poor Families in Nigeria to Escape Hunger

Summary

This project will support the poorest families in Anambra State, to start small businesses. About 25 million people out of the over 200 million living in Nigeria, are experiencing hunger. Factors such as climate change, poverty, insecurity and conflicts which has made it difficult for farmers to access their lands, are the major contributors. Many families can't afford one meal a day, talk more of three and this affects their health, especially children who face malnutrition and possible death.

Challenge

Many families in Nigeria today are on the brink of starvation. Before now, low-income families manage to eat twice daily, but that is now a luxury they can't afford. A hungry person is an angry person and hunger can push people into a life of crime, superstition, prostitution etc. Hunger can hinder a child's access to education through malnutrition, as malnourished children often have reduced energy and focus. At events, people scramble for foods to eat and also take home for their families.

Solution

We will support these families to start up small businesses or grow the ones they already have, in order to be able to feed properly and also take good care of themselves.

Long-Term Impact

These families will have a source of livelihood and be able to provide for themselves. Addressing hunger is a key goal of international development efforts, as reducing hunger will contribute to progress on multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including those related to health, education, and poverty reduction.
