Similar to the broader African population, 60% of Mauritania's the population is less than 25 years old, and an outstanding 44% of those aged between 14 and 35 are neither professionally active, enrolled in school nor in vocational training. The situation is much harder for women who make up more than half of the working-age population in the country of approximately five million people.

In this age of the digital knowledge economy, digital skills are a necessity that too many still cannot access. Barakah Yields offers an in-person learning experience with beginner and intermediate level courses in computer usage skills, data analytics, network maintenance, infographics, and languages (Arabic, English, French, and Spanish) - All being carried out by a team of volunteers.

Challenges

We are, however, facing several challenges in providing a suitable and sustainable space for education. Our in-person model is essential given our students do not have access to computers at home. But the present situation is unstable with increasing rents, unpredictable electric bills, and water leakages from the roof when it rains causing damages and difficulties in carrying out our operations. During the last rainy season in 2022 and 2023, the floods resulted in unrecoverable damages to our desktops and other equipment, which we had to replace to remain operational.

We are looking to purchase our own space, however modest it may be to focus on bettering our course offering and expanding the number of lives that we are impacting.

All equipment and maintenance costs have been all founder-funded to date, but we need your help to carry on with our mission and vision to spread barakah through education by getting our own center.
