Living Stones: Georgetown Extends Mercy

"You yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house" (1 Peter 2:5)

Sister Mary Luke Feldpausch, DO's community is The Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, Michigan. Graduating this year from Georgetown's internal medicine program, she would like to share with you her community's building project. With a growing community (40% under the age of 38 and receiving about 5 new Sisters each year), we have 16 convents spread throughout the United States, and 5 abroad. Her fellow Sisters, Sister Teresa Mary Kozlovski (Georgetown medical school 2012-2016) and Sister Grace Miriam Usala (Georgetown medical school then MGUH IM residency June 2017-May 2020) are grateful for the education and support received at Georgetown and send their warmest greetings!

Our main convent is the Motherhouse in Alma, Michigan, where the Sisters come home each year for retreat and formation; but the Motherhouse only has space for 83 Sisters. We have 120 Sisters and growing, with a need to build a larger chapel and accommodations for the new Sisters. Additionally, several Sisters who have served the poor and vulnerable in education and healthcare for decades are themselves now in need of long-term and intensive care. We need to build an infirmary for these Sisters so that they can continue their work of prayer (which never ends) and remain united with their religious family in all the ways possible to them.

The Mercy charism connects well with the Georgetown mission of "cura personalis." The care of the whole person, emphasized during medical school training, in the classrooms and on the floors, is another way of expressing our Mercy mission of comprehensive health care. Cura personalis is a beautiful setting in which to learn medicine and serve the poor and the sick, by bringing the Mercy of God to those in misery in mind and body.

With this large building project, each Sister strives to do her part to raise the needed funds to continue our service in Mercy. Can Georgetown help extend Mercy to those who have radically dedicated their lives for Mercy?
