Some people were allergic, and some apartments simply didn’t allow dogs. It was heartbreaking to feel like I had to choose between having a place to live and keeping my fur baby. 🐾

Safe Harbor is getting closer to opening its doors — and right now, every gift can go twice as far.

A generous Harbor Hero has offered to match donations to Safe Harbor, dollar for dollar, up to $100,000. If we can raise the full match, it means $200,000 to help complete our first Safe Harbor campus and begin serving families.

Safe Harbor was built around one simple belief: a temporary crisis should not cause the permanent loss of a beloved dog.

We are creating a reunification-focused program for people facing housing instability, domestic violence, medical treatment, military deployment, and other serious but temporary hardships. We care for their dogs while they work toward safety and stability — and then we help bring them back together.

This match could be transformational for us.

Funds will help complete the dog suites already under construction, including insulation, windows, climate control, flooring, fencing, power and solar systems, security and monitoring, specialized dog doors, and the equipment needed to safely welcome our first dogs. It will also help establish the care and referral infrastructure needed to operate responsibly once we open.

**Why I am Building Safe Harbor**

Why I Built Safe Harbor

The idea for Safe Harbor had been sitting in my desk for nearly 20 years. But one dog finally made me pull the trigger.

Her owner entered treatment for addiction, and she was placed in what was supposed to be a safe boarding situation. About a month later, she came into my care significantly underweight and very sick.

I spent the next couple of weeks getting her healthy again, thinking that if there was a **Safe Harbor**, she would have never suffered to begin with.  

That experience made me realize that wanting to help wasn't enough. There needed to be a safe, structured place where dogs could be cared for while their people had the time and support they needed to truly get back on their feet.

So, after nearly 20 years of thinking about Safe Harbor, I finally started building it.

Since then, the requests for help have only confirmed the need. I hear from domestic violence survivors, people losing their housing, and families facing other crises who are terrified that getting themselves to safety could mean losing their pets.

**One dog made me start building Safe Harbor. Every request since has reminded me why I can't stop.**

**Safe Harbor**

**When a family loses their housing, they shouldn’t have to lose their dog, too.**

Safe Harbor provides temporary, safe housing for dogs whose families are experiencing housing instability or crisis and have nowhere for their pets to go.

For many people facing homelessness, displacement, domestic crisis, hospitalization, or another temporary hardship, finding a safe place for a beloved dog can become an impossible barrier. Shelters and temporary housing often cannot accommodate pets, commercial boarding can be unaffordable, and surrendering a dog may feel like the only option.

**Safe Harbor exists to create another option.**

We are building a peaceful, purpose-designed campus in Central Massachusetts where dogs can stay safely while their people work toward stable housing. Unlike traditional surrender or adoption models, our goal is not to find these dogs new families. **Our goal is to help them stay connected to the families they already have.**

Safe Harbor is currently in its building phase, creating individual indoor and outdoor living spaces designed to provide dogs with safety, comfort, enrichment, and consistency during their stay. Once operational, we will work alongside community organizations and service providers to help families navigate temporary housing instability without permanently losing their pets.

Every donation helps us move closer to opening our doors—from completing our first dog living spaces and outdoor areas to purchasing equipment and supplies and building the infrastructure necessary to welcome our first Harbor Dogs.

**Because sometimes keeping a family together means giving one member of that family a safe place to wait.**
