If you are not aware of the Open Doors English program (ODE), located in the First Presbyterian Church on DeWitt Park, I encourage you to contact them to learn about the program and perhaps even volunteer (607-319-5051). A palpable sense of joy permeates the school as students from around the globe learn how to speak and write English while learning about other cultures and languages from their classmates. You will learn that these students come from all walks of life and have little to no formal education to those with advanced degrees. They receive an excellent education at little to no cost from teachers who have devoted themselves to work that impacts not only each student and their family but our Ithaca community and beyond. Come and see the smiles and hear the laughter in the classrooms to truly appreciate the essence of this wonderful program. And be sure to catch ODE in the Thursday, May 28, Ithaca Festival Parade! Just look for the rolling Open Door and a gaggle of smiling students and teachers!
