My son is involved in an overly-ambitious project to bike some 20K kilometers from Alaska to Argentina. I am wishing him safe travels, and hoping that others may donate to this cause, which will help protect indigenous people and also, in turn, global warming.

Hi! 
I’m currently biking from the shores of the Arctic Ocean in Alaska all the way down to the tip of South America. This transcontinental ride will serve as a fundraiser for the Amazon Watch, a nonprofit dedicated to protect the rainforest and advance the rights of Indigenous peoples in the Amazon Basin.

Along the roughly 25000km I will be sharing my own experiences and hope to do my best to approach the places I go through with a decolonized mindset, to show respect to the land and its inhabitants.

Amazon Watch works in solidarity with Indigenous and environmental organizations in campaigns for human rights, corporate accountability, and the preservation of the Amazon’s ecological systems. The harrowing truth is that the tipping point for the Amazon rainforest is here and bold and immediate actions are necessary to make the tipping point a turning point. Already more than 20% of the rainforest has been deforested, and new fossil fuel extraction, mining, large-scale hydroelectric dams, clearings for animal agriculture and other developments cause even greater deforestation. Actualmente estoy andando en bicicleta desde las costas del Océano Ártico en Alaska hasta la punta de América del Sur. Este viaje transcontinental sirve para recaudar fondos para Amazon Watch, una organización sin fines de lucro dedicada a proteger la selva tropical y promover los derechos de los pueblos indígenas en la Amazonía.

Biking from Alaska to Patagonia for the Amazon

Protecting the Amazon rainforest and our climate in solidarity with Indigenous peoples

Since 1996, Amazon Watch has defended the Amazon rainforest and our climate in solidarity with Indigenous peoples. Long-term, trusted partnerships with Indigenous peoples — the best stewards of the rainforest — are the foundation for Amazon Watch’s campaigns for climate justice, corporate accountability, and the permanent protection of the rainforest.

The Amazon is home to more than 511 distinct Indigenous peoples. As our planet’s largest tropical rainforest, it stabilizes our global climate and an immense amount of Earth’s biodiversity and flowing freshwater can be found there. This vital ecosystem and the Indigenous peoples who have stewarded it for centuries face grave threats from deforestation, resource extraction, land grabs, and destructive development projects. The Amazon is facing a tipping point and won't be able to sustain itself as a rainforest if we remain on our current path of destruction.

To move to a turning point, Amazon Watch is carrying out campaigns in partnership with Indigenous peoples to secure Indigenous rights to ancestral territories, halt oil drilling and mining in the biome, and mobilize solidarity funds directly to Amazonian peoples at their request. Their work combines on-the-ground legal, advocacy, and communications expertise and long-term trusted partnerships with Indigenous peoples and organizations.

🌳Amazon Watch’s Amazon Defenders Fund (ADF) provides direct solidarity funding to Amazonian peoples and organizations free of bureaucratic barriers. The ADF supports Indigenous-led initiatives including community organizing, women’s leadership, communal economies, protection of Earth Defenders at risk for resisting destructive development, and crisis response including to wildfires and oil spills.
