The Youth Initiative (YI) Program is a flagship civic education and leadership program, designed by Hong Kong Watch to empower young Hong Kongers in the diaspora to actively participate in democratic life.

Since its launch in Canada in 2022, the program has trained over 60 young participants and successfully placed interns in the Parliament of Canada, with several alumni progressing into full-time roles in federal, provincial, and municipal governments.

In 2026, the YI Program will expand into the US:

- A three-day training conference in Washington, DC (September 12-14) for selected candidates
- Visits to Congress and online seminars
- Additional in-person training sessions provided separately by the Bay Area HongKonger Community Center in California

Hong Kong Watch is starting strong in 2026. In February, we held a [productive meeting](https://www.hongkongwatch.org/all-posts/2026/2/13/hong-kong-watch-holds-constructive-meeting-at-the-white-house-on-hong-kong) with an official from the National Security Council at the White House. During a visit to Washington, DC in March, we [engaged](https://www.hongkongwatch.org/all-posts/2026/3/26/canadian-mps-and-hong-kong-watch-conclude-successful-visit-to-washington-dc) with six Members of Congress – including Representatives James McGovern, John Moolenaar, Young Kim, Carlos Giménez, James Moylan and Nathaniel Moran – and three congressional offices.

In 2025, thanks to your generosity, Hong Kong Watch held [high-level meetings at the White House](https://www.hongkongwatch.org/all-posts/2025/9/24/hong-kong-watch-engages-with-the-white-house-members-of-congress-and-think-tanks-on-indo-pacific-strategies-and-china-policy-in-washington-dc). We also met in person with eight Members of Congress – including [Senator Bill Hagerty, Representatives Rob Wittman](https://www.hongkongwatch.org/all-posts/2025/9/24/hong-kong-watch-engages-with-the-white-house-members-of-congress-and-think-tanks-on-indo-pacific-strategies-and-china-policy-in-washington-dc), [John Moolenaar, James McGovern, André Carson](https://www.hongkongwatch.org/all-posts/2025/4/14/hong-kong-watch-engages-with-white-house-officials-and-members-of-congress-to-amplify-hong-kongers-voices-in-washington-dc), [Carlos Giménez](https://www.hongkongwatch.org/all-posts/2025/3/7/hong-kong-watch-advocates-for-human-rights-and-democratic-freedoms-in-washington-dc), [Ritchie Torres and Seth Moulton](https://www.hongkongwatch.org/all-posts/2025/1/24/hong-kong-watch-visits-washington-dc-to-champion-defending-human-rights-in-hong-kong) – and over 30 congressional offices to strengthen bipartisan support for Hong Kong’s freedom and democracy.

Hong Kong Watch defends human rights, freedoms and the rule of law in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Watch is a [UK registered charity](https://register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk/charity-details/?regid=1180013&subid=0) founded in 2017, consisting of Hong Kongers and friends of Hong Kong, working closely with Hong Kong community groups in the diaspora.

We inform and educate legislators, policy-makers and the media, and raise awareness among the wider public, about the violations of human rights, basic freedoms and the rule of law in Hong Kong, and advocate for actions to assist Hong Kongers. We do this through a combination of in-depth research reports, regular topical briefings, opinion editorials, media briefings and interviews, and advocacy campaigns.

We also help integrate, support, welcome and strengthen the capacity of the Hong Kong diaspora, through a programme of civic and political education and community engagement.
