Our scholarships cover tuition fees and contribute towards living costs, but what happens when the cost of living in London becomes unmanageable?

The UK, like so many other places around the world, is in the grip of an unprecedented cost of living crisis. LSHTM students in London must contend with typical rent rises of 30% since 2019, while the price of food has risen by 12% this year. 

We all know that the cost of heating our homes has skyrocketed, presenting difficult decisions for those struggling financially. 

Although our scholarship packages endeavour to keep pace with inflation, many students still struggle financially during their studies. The stress of money worries is a major barrier to academic success, and can result in talented students dropping out completely.

The reality is that this is already translating into increased demand for emergency funding at LSHTM through our Student Financial Support Fund. 

The number of applications from students in urgent need has doubled since the previous academic year, and the amount our students are seeking far exceeds the £1,500 maximum we can currently offer.

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is renowned for its world-leading research, postgraduate studies and continuing education in public and global health.

With your help, we can increase the number of scholarships we are able to offer. We receive thousands of applications every year, with funding only available to support a small number. 

Our diverse student body is what makes our community so special. Each year, your support funds our LSHTM Fund Scholars, enabling exceptional students to study at our School. We receive thousands of applications every year, with funding only available to support a small number. Without support, many brilliant students like this year's LSHTM Fund Scholar, Judy Baariu (MSc Public Health for Development, 2023) would not have been able to study with us.

LSHTM has over 3,500 staff conducting research in more than 100 countries, with core hubs in London and at the MRC Units in The Gambia and Uganda. Our outstanding, diverse and committed staff make an impact where it is most needed - deploying research in real time in response to crises, developing innovative programmes for major health threats, or training the next generations of public and global health leaders and researchers.

We help shape health policy and translate research findings into tangible impact. We are uniquely placed to lead on transformative approaches to global health and have 120 years of experience tackling big challenges. We are focused on finding new solutions to complex problems and acting upon this knowledge.

We work in collaboration with friends, partners, and supporters to achieve large-scale, long-term impact. Researchers at LSHTM explore all aspects of health challenges, from fundamental laboratory science to policy appraisal and analysis, encompassing statistical, clinical, laboratory, epidemiological and social science research globally.

Our aim is to build strong and dynamic leadership, push the frontiers of knowledge and make an impact where it is most needed. Philanthropy helps us achieve our mission; to improve health and health equity worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.
